Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – December 2022

Hi all

Welcome to my latest newsletter.

I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and peaceful New Year.

Thank you to everyone who has been in touch on a wide range of subjects of late – which I will touch upon below.

Life in local politics is certainly still eventful.  Whilst I can’t claim its been quite as dramatic as happenings in Westminster (no one would have said on 3 December 2021 we’d have 3 prime ministers by 3 December 2022), there’s still plenty of work to keep me busy.

Looking back, it also seems crazy to believe that during much of last year COVID restrictions were in place.  Time goes so quickly and it can be so easy to forget everything we have all been through.  This graphic timeline-coronavirus-lockdown-december-2021 (1) from the Institute for Government, shows all of the lockdown measures in place for around 18 months.  So much has changed in 2022.

In this update I’ll reflect a little on the past year, including some of the things I’ve been involved in locally and tried to make a positive difference.

Looking forward to 2023 I’d also like to get your views on your local priorities for Kimberley and the surrounding areas, again I’ll touch on this below.

As ever if you need help or assistance on anything, or ever want to talk through something please let me know.

The email address for me is either rrobinson.richardsrobinson@gmail.com or richard.robinson@broxtowe.gov.uk

Best regards

Richard

Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – December 2022

A look back on 2022

  • Thinking about December last year I recall being heavily involved in trying to help many local residents who were receiving ridiculous parking fines at the precinct in Kimberley.  Thankfully all of the complaints that I received were resolved, and to the best of my knowledge there have been no further problems since then.  Thanks also to Sam Boneham now a member of Kimberley Town Council, for his assistance in this matter.
  • I have dealt with a number of lengthy individual planning applications this year in various areas of Kimberley.  One current planning matter (Swingate) is currently at appeal stage and has been since September, with no sign of a final decision being reached yet.
  • I have also been lobbied of late by a number of people concerning the proposed demolition of the stone/brick cottage standing prominently half-way up Church Hill (nos 4).  I am currently in correspondence with Broxtowe borough Council and a number of local residents about this matter.
  • There are ongoing problems on Eastwood Road, Kimberley with cars obstructing residents drives near the Caravan Centre.
  • During the last month I have received a number of complaints regarding blocked drains and flooding around Hayley Close and Goodwin Drive.  I have made various representations to Nottinghamshire County Council.  It appears that there has been some success in getting drains unblocked, but there are still ongoing issues with flooding (when it rains – Goodwin Drive in particular) suffers particularly badly.
  • Footpath Bridge between Chilton Drive and Flixton Road, Kimberley (it was in a poor state) – I was asked by Kimberley Town Council to take this matter up with Broxtowe Borough Council.

The picture above shows the new surface, which appears to be a big improvement.

  • Of late I have also started to receive (again) after hearing very little feedback for ages, complaints about road traffic noise from the A610.  This affects people in various parts of Kimberley including Laverock Close, Kimberley Close, and  Dawver Road – it is residents around Hayley Close and Goodwin Drive who are particularly suffering now.
  • Throughout this year I have continued to receive complaints surrounding Fairgrove and their after care service.
  • I am currently dealing with an environmental health issue with regards to an empty and potentially dangerous property in Kimberley.
  • During 2022 (after 7-8 years campaigning) the wall on Ruislip close was finally reduced in size, after many requests by residents being received, and numerous representations made.
  • Rumbletums on the corner of Victoria Street are an absolutely brilliant asset to Kimberley.  I attended their AGM last month, and am now helping them with further grant applications.

Looking ahead to 2023 – I would be particularly pleased to receive your ideas for what you would like to see by way of improvements in Kimberley and the surrounding areas.  You may have any number of ideas on a range of subjects, I would be pleased to receive them, however big or small they are.

I’ll mention just a couple of things below that stand out from my perspective:

I am very aware from what’s happened this week about the utter traffic chaos that built up again in Kimberley with Swingate being gridlocked.  Words are no longer enough and the County Council need to stop prevaricating, ignoring this part of Kimberley and put some meaningful measures in place to help Swingate residents.

Readers of this newsletter for the past few years may recall the very extensive work that was undertaken in 2016: https://richardsrobinson.org.uk/2016/08/submission-to-nottinghamshire-council-regarding-suggested-highways-improvements-in-kimberley-swingate-and-maws-lane-areas/

The County Council response to the above was abysmal, and I know that Cllr Sam Boneham (Kimberley Town Council is very keen to take action in the new year.

  • What would you like to see happen now in order to make life easier for Swingate residents with regards to traffic problems?

There’s also the perennial problems with traffic issues along Maws Lane, Cliff Boulevard, Hardy Street etc.  Many previous attempts have been made to try and improve matters.  I’ve received a number of complaints lately about agitated drivers having altercations in the middle of Maws Lane.

  • What would you like to see happen in this area?:

I would like to place on record my thanks to Kimberley Town Council for all of their endeavours this year, from the Memorial Service, to the Christmas Lights Switch on, and Christmas market.

Also I’d like to pay tribute to Cllr Sam Boneham for his tireless working enabling the Food Festival to take place in March.

Do send me your comments, observations, questions and moans!
