Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – March, April & May 2022

Hi all

Welcome to my latest newsletter.

Well it’s definitely been a busy old time since my last newsletter in February, personally as well of course with council work.   I particularly emphasise old as I’ve now reached one of those milestones in life – becoming the grand old age of 60 earlier this month.  Yes, and since you ask, I can’t actually believe it.

Nevertheless I am now a proud owner of a Senior Citizens Rail Card  (which really brought my age home to me), and I am making good use of this.

Also in a bit more personal news – in March Sarah and I became grandparents for the first time.  If you are friends with me on Facebook you might have noticed a subtle change of track from the occasional political pondering or something connected with Leeds United to proud doting Grandparent posts.

Then additionally on top of this last month I’ve been offered (and accepted) a new job.  This starts next month on 16 May working for the Public Affairs Company – About Us | The Public Affairs Company – as a Government Relations Consultant.

So all in all, it’s been a pretty busy time.

There’s now plenty of news to update you all on locally, and I hope the information below is useful for you.

As ever if you need help or assistance on anything, or ever want to discuss something please let me know.

Trust all of the information provided below is helpful.

Best regards

Richard

Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – March, April & May 2022

– Broxtowe Borough Council launches Ukraine appeal
– Around the world in 80 days
– Are you interested in sport?
– Fly tipping in Kimberley
– Knowle Park play improvements
– Kimberley Food Festival
– New litter bin on Knowle Hill
– Tram extension – Kimberley, Eastwood & Langley Mill – improving public transport in Broxtowe and Amber Valley

1)  Broxtowe Borough Council launches Ukraine appeal

Anyone who wishes to offer a financial donation and or much needed items to support the Humanitarian Aid Work taking place in Ukraine and Poland, is now able to do so under a special scheme set up by the council.

Specifically in Broxtowe – the borough is in friendship with the town of Myszkow, Poland who are currently experiencing an influx of refugees, due to being located close to the Ukrainian border.

Please click on the following link for more information on how to offer support: Broxtowe Borough Council Launches Ukraine Appeal : Broxtowe Borough Council

2)  Around the world in 80 days – Holy Trinity Church, Eastwood Road, Kimberley, Saturday 30 March, 1830

A reminder of this community event taking place tomorrow in Kimberley, please see details by clicking on the link:

Raib or Shine Leaflet 80 Days

This is a joint venture between Kimberley Church and Kimberley Institute Cricket Club.

The theatre company Rain or Shine have performed three times in Kimberley previously, each one a great success.

Call Jim Dymond for more information and tickets on 0115 854 4734, email: james.dymond1@ntlworld.com

3)  New sporting memories group starts today

A new sporting memories group at Chilwell Olympia starts today 10am.

The group is free of charge and ideal for anyone in the local community who is isolated, dementia, Alzheimer’s or just wants to talk sport and meet like-minded people.

Please see the poster below for more information

4)  Fly tipping in Kimberley

Earlier this month I was alerted to instances of fly tipping in Kimberley – mattresses and a whole load of other stuff which looked pretty disgusting, dumped at the back of Edgwood Road, near to the nature reserve.   I reported this and it has now been removed.

If there are any other instances of fly tipping you come across, please let me know.

5)  Knowle Park improvement survey

There’s some great work being proposed by Kimberley Town Council, with a lot of work being put in especially by Cllrs Ian Wilson, Sam Boneham and Neil Doherty to try and get some major upgrades to Knowle Park recreation ground in Kimberley.

Some of the suggestions include a small cycle track, more play equipment specifically for people suffering learning disabilities, benches for parents, a zip-wire (definitely not one for me), general upgrading of the play equipment etc.

Around 7-8 years ago when I was a Community Governor at Kimberley Primary school – we initiated a project to get some new equipment on Knowle Park, which we wereduly  successful with, however it is looking a bit tired now, and work now being undertaken should provide a very welcome boost for users of the park.

There is a survey you can fill in here Knowle Park Improvement Survey (surveymonkey.co.uk) – to give your views.

For more information, please contact either Cllrs Ian Wilson – or Sam Boneham:

ian.wilson22@ntlworld.com

samuel.boneham101@gmail.com

6)   Kimberley Food Festival

Last May when I sat down with Dave Fewster (joint owner of the Doghouse pub in Kimberley), and Sam Boneham and discussed how Kimberley might start buzzing again, little did we probably realise about how successful a food festival in the town might be.

Fast forward then to 13 March this year and over 3,000 visitors came to the Food Festival.   Every stall holder and vendor either sold out (some even twice) or were left with very little stock by the end of the day.

Business saw a dramatic and much welcomed uptake in business.  There were sell-out services at the Chip Shop on James Street, Mucky’s and Sugarlicious Cake, pubs and cafes up and down the town centre were absolutely packed all day.

The credit for this huge piece of work goes largely to Kimberley Town Cllr – Sam Boneham who worked tirelessly late into the night on many occasions leading up to 13 March, in order to make the Food Festival a success.

Also Matt & Sarah Haslam were a brilliant support to Sam, alongside many volunteers who helped on the day, giving up their time in order to make the event a success.

So what’s next?  Well after some reflection and looking at what can be improved upon for next year, Sam is looking for the Kimberley Food Festival to become an annual event for Kimberley, bigger and better with some improvements.

Please contact Cllr Sam Boneham for more information and if you would like to help with the organising: samuel.boneham101@gmail.com

…..as a footnote to this – both Sam and Dave are now members of Kimberley Town Council – and I am sure both will continue to be excellent ambassadors for the area in the weeks, months and years ahead.

7)   New litter bin Knowle Hill, Kimberley

I was asked earlier this month for a new bin at the top of Knowle Hill, and this has now been put in place.
If anyone else would like new litter bins in your area, please let me know.

8)  Improving public transport in the north of Broxtowe and Amber Valley

Last month I asked the Chief Executive Officer at Broxtowe to look at ways it would still be possible to look at new funding channels for improving public transport in the area, and specifically now Hs2 at Toton has been mothballed from the original concept.

There are still some opportunities for us in Broxtowe to look at tram and light rail connectivity, and I for one do not want to see the campaigning work in Kimberley and surrounding areas that has been undertaken over the past 12 years go to waste!

Richard Robinson » Langley Mill Super Hub – Tram extension Line 4 phase III to Kimberley, Eastwood & into Amber Valley (richardsrobinson.org.uk)

If you would like to get involved in new campaigns to secure the tram out to Kimberley, Eastwood & Langley Mill – please get in touch.

News in brief

a) Fairgrove – former Brewery site Kimberley – I am meeting residents next week to talk about some ongoing concerns on the site.

b) Smart Parking – The Precinct Kimberley – the car parking management of this site has been in new hands for several months (EuroParks).  I continue howeverto receive complaints about residual fines from the previous managers Smart Parking – in some instances the “offences” were detailed as people parking there for 24 hours when in fact it was only 6 minutes!  If anyone is still being troubled by Smart Parking, please let me know.

c) Sainsburys Cafe – Kimberley – this is now closed.  Lots of speculation about what might come in its place.  When I have more definitive information I will let you know.
