Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – December 2021

Hi all

A very warm welcome to my latest newsletter, and especially those who have joined within the past few weeks.

Looking back it’s been quite a year in many ways – some things now seem an eternity away – recalling just a few examples:

  • in February Captain Sir Moore who raised over £32m for NHS charities died at the age of 100.
  • in July England reached the final of a major football international tournament for the first time since 1966.
  • in September British tennis player Emma Raducano won the 2021 US Open Women’s Singles at her first attempt and is the first female British player to win a major since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977.
  • in October Conservative MP Sir David Amess died after being stabbed multiple times during his constituency surgery at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh on Sea.
  • in October and November the UK hosted a summit called COP26 (COP stands for Conference of the Parties) – about climate change and how countries are going to tackle it.
  • in November Marcus Rashford was awarded an MBE for his campaigning to help vulnerable children.
  • Europe officially generated more electricity through renewable sources than fossil fuels for the first time during the past 18 months.

It goes without saying that COVID has dominated much of the year, as it did in 2020 – affecting every part of our lives and seems set to do so well into the New Year.

It’s been a hugely difficult year for many of us and in different ways and this Christmas time may not be an easy one for some.  I recall two people we have so sadly lost during the past year this year – Andy Tibbitts who lived on Chapter Drive and Russ Saxton from Hardy Street.  Both were legends in their own right and highly respected and loved by many people locally in the wider community.   Andy was a local driving instructor and Russ was a professional musician (and my son’s guitar teacher).   My thoughts and prayers go to their families this Christmas time, and for others who have lost loved ones during the past 12 months.

My hope is that the New Year can bring more of the compassion, community and civic responsibility that I have witnessed locally (and especially during the pandemic). Even therefore despite the difficulties and challenges we all face I remain in an optimistic mood for 2022.

As ever if you need help or assistance on anything let me know.

Can I take this opportunity to wish you all well for Christmas and the New Year.

Best regards

Richard

Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – December 2021

–  Christmas market in Kimberley
–  Kimberley Leisure Centre
–  Update on parking charges The Precinct, Kimberley – meeting successfully arranged with Smart Parking Limited
–  Is there a Plan B for the tram extension to Kimberley and Eastwood?
–  Relate
–  News in Brief

1) Christmas market in Kimberley

Broxtowe Borough Council have organised a market in Kimberley – tomorrow Tuesday 21 December between 8am and 3pm at James Street Car Park.
Music is being provided by the Punjabi Roots Academy, with a range of stalls set to be in operation.
For more information please contact:

Jonathon Little
Economic Development & Regeneration Manager
Broxtowe Borough Council
E: jonathon.little@broxtowe.gov.uk

2)   Kimberley Leisure Centre

I reported in last month’s newsletter on the discussions I had on 27 October with East Midlands Education Trust (EMET) to understand fully their position as it then was regarding Kimberley Leisure Centre:

Last week I was updated by EMET on the progress that had been made since October with Broxtowe Borough Council on plans going forward in 2022 and beyond.  The information I have now been sent is shown here: Leisure Centre Update

Discussions are ongoing over the next few weeks in order to conclude a final agreement, and as you will see from the Leisure Centre update directly above, there has been solid progress with a more promising outlook set for the next three years, than that was originally mooted by some earlier this year.  The name of Kimberley Leisure Centre will change, however it appears now that an agreement seems to be in sight that includes community and day time use for several years ahead.  This in turn allows the council and others time to bid for funds to secure leisure funding for a longer period into the future.

I would like to thank all of those working hard behind the scenes currently on the final agreement (Liberty Leisure, EMET and Broxtowe BC), and on the work that they have done previously and collaboratively during the past few months.

As soon as there is more information available in 2022 I will let you know.

3)  Parking charges – The Precinct, Kimberley

I reported on this matter in last month’s newsletter and together with Sam Boneham (Chair of Swingate Residents Association) – we have both spent many hours fielding complaints from residents, and liaising with Smart Parking (who have been issuing the fines) and also the owners of the car park itself.

We originally met Smart Parking (who were then operating the restrictions and responsible for issuing fines) on 19 November last month at the precinct in Kimberley where we discussed in detail the problems that local residents and shoppers were facing.

Both Sam and I have dealt with multiple complaints about fines (and got a good number of them rescinded), including a handful today 20 December.

On a wider note Sam and I have asked the owners of the site (LCP) as to whether a separate exit could be made to avoid some of the congestion, and this is now being looked into.

As those of you who are regular users of the precinct will no doubt have seen there is now a new company (operating the parking restrictions) Euro Car Parks.  However some of the old Smart Parking fines are still coming through.  If anyone experiences any problems please let Sam or myself now.
The contact for Sam is: samuel.boneham101@gmail.com

4)   Is there plan B for the tram extension through Kimberley & Eastwood?

Many of you will be aware of the work that has been taking place ever since 2009 on getting the tram out to Kimberley and beyond:

We had originally hoped that this would be able to coincide with the Hs2 station at Toton.   However you will no doubt have heard about the change of mind that the government has had with the Eastern leg of Hs2 now being scrapped (affecting the whole of Broxtowe – not only Toton).

We are now looking at alternative ways that tram connectivity and better public transport through Kimberley and Eastwood could be realised.  I had a meeting two weeks ago with some key stakeholders looking at the possibilities for linking a tram extension with a reopening of the Maid Marian line (contact me if you want more specific details of this).

There is so much uncertainty at the moment, however we have not given up the fight.  In my email folder there is a very large file entitled “2025 – tram extension to Kimberley”.    I and many others hoped that we might have started to build in 2025.  This clearly is not going to happen.  Whilst this is disappointing we need not to dwell on what could have been, but what potential there is to adapt plans for the future.

As 2022 develops I will keep you posted on any realistic opportunities for the tram extension from Phoenix Park to be developed – in whatever form that takes.

5)  Relate Nottingham

Some of you will have heard of the charity Relate.  I have been appointed by the Borough Council – to serve on its local board.
Here’s just a little update on their work:

Starting in the New Year, Relate Nottinghamshire who provide couple counselling, marriage counselling and family counselling as well as individual counselling have been awarded funding from Nottinghamshire County Council to provide free or reduced rate counselling to anyone over 18 living in Broxtowe. We are the experts in relationship therapy and want as many people as possible to benefit from our highly trained specialist counsellors.

The counselling sessions last for about an hour and each person, or couple will be entitled to between 4 and 6 sessions depending on your need. The counselling sessions will be online via Zoom and available Monday to Friday between 9am and 5 pm.

If you would like to speak to a counsellor, in confidence about anything to do with your personal relationships we have a free 30-minute telephone counselling service available on Monday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Please email  support@relate-nottingham.org.uk.

To speak to our trained customer advisers call us on 0115 9584278 or email info@relate-nottingham.org.uk. Our team are here between 9am and 5 pm Monday to Friday.

6)  News in brief

– Drains on Hardy Street, Kimberley – I have had lots of complaints over the past 4-6 weeks on blocked drains in this location.  I have been assured that action will be taken on this.  If problems persist, please let me know.

– Blocked drains and flooding at the bottom of Awsworth Lane, corner of Hayley Close Kimberley – I have had many complaints about this during the past year, but I am told by a number of residents that matters have improved as of late.  Should any issues occur again please let me know.
