Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – November and December edition

Hi all

Trust you are keeping well, still in these continuing very challenging times.

Can I take this opportunity to wish you all a restful Christmas and healthy New Year.

Thanks to everyone who has been in touch over the past few weeks – there’s a wide variety of matters to report on, and it’s been crazily busy of late, so much so that I simply ran out of time in November to issue a newsletter so this is a combined one covering the last two months.  I’ve been dealing for example with a large amount of planning applications, appeals, disputes and complaints, all of which can be quite time consuming.

However I am approaching 2021 with an optimistic mind set, looking forward to plenty of new challenges, as well as trying to work through some long standing problems in Kimberley and nearby on traffic flow, together with a major campaign to regenerate and boost local business – not just in Kimberley town centre, but at the outskirts too.

Feedback is always welcome and if ever you need help with anything, please let me know.

Together, we can and will get through this COVID-19 pandemic.

Best regards

1. COVID-19 Update

It has been announced earlier today that the whole of Nottinghamshire remains under Tier 3 restrictions.

Current guidance on what can and can’t be done in this tier and covering the Christmas period next week is shown here:

To give you some idea of the sheer scale of work undertaken by Broxtowe Borough Council regarding supporting local businesses I am enclosing a report from Full Council last night – click on: Leader’s Report Council 16 December 2020 (1) which proves an extremely interesting read.

If anyone has any questions or comments please let me know.

2.  Footpath from Broomhill Road through to Chapter Drive, Kimberley

After 18 months of site visits, meetings & numerous emails – the footpath resurfacing between Broomhill Road & Chapter Drive Kimberley has been completed last week. Not quite has hard going as the Brexit negotiations, although it felt like it at times. A good job done hopefully!  Thank you to local residents who originally got in touch about this.  I should pay a big tribute Helen Spencer at VIAEM (Nottinghamshire County Council) who supervised this project and did a brilliant job.131204958_10159137909183969_6027584951368754766_n 131391212_10159137909103969_7655381284582672272_n

3. Request for Provision of new pedestrian pathway between new industrial site Panattoni, Park, Nottingham NG16 3UA – & Eastwood

I have been approached by a number of people living locally who are concerned about the lack of footpath for people working at the new industrial site (on the A610) just after Eastwood going towards Langley Mill & Ripley (where new the little roundabout is).  A number of workers on the site walk to and from Eastwood Town Centre (and further afield) and to do that they have to walk alongside the very busy A610.

The information that Nottinghamshire County Council (VIAem) has provided indicates that a Feasibility Study was carried out which concluded that the cost of providing a footway would be extremely high (around £350,000). The added complication is that the A610 north of the brook is owned and managed by Derbyshire County Council.

Further enquiries are being undertaken to find out what possibly can be done to make the area safer for pedestrians.

If anyone needs any more information please get in touch.

4)   Langley Mill Super Hub (incorporating Tram extension Line 4 phase III to Kimberley, Eastwood, & into Amber Valley)

A  (virtual) meeting took place on Friday 30 October with Nottingham City Council, senior officers and cllrs from Broxtowe meeting to discuss (then as we anticipated) the next steps in this project with regards to tram extension from Phoenix Park.  Following on from the meeting we are now planning to work together with a Economic and Transport Consultant, alongside Nottingham City Council in order to make the strongest case possible for significant investment in the Kimberley, Eastwood Langley Mill area in terms of improving public transport links.

We were all set to launch a further in depth Feasibility Study and environmental and economic assessment in January next month.
This week though we have received a major set back with our plans.  One of the biggest body blows during the past 11 years this campaign has been running.
You may have seen on the news reports indicating that the proposed Hs2 station at Toton will be recommended to be scrapped, with termination at East Midlands Parkway.  Thousands of additional jobs which were expected in the East Midlands and the transformation of rail connections between East Midlands, Birmingham, Leeds, the North East and Scotland are all in jeopardy.
For us locally in Kimberley, Eastwood (areas that always miss out from major investment) – this means that the plans to link in the tram extension from Phoenix Park, through Kimberley and Eastwood to Langley Mill (with then a fast train link to Hs2 at Toton) are at risk.  So much of the work that has been put in thus far has centred around attracting the £165m needed for the tram extension – to fit in with the Hs2 station at Toton, via the Langley Mill transport exchange and super hub.
As I mention above I’ve been battling for this for last 11 years.  I’ve lost count of the number of hours put in – early morning and late at night, writing reports, meeting with MPs, talking with constituents.  We’ve had many ups and down, some mistakes have been made along the way, but I can’t conceal the fact that it looks like a mountain to climb now, in order to realise the aim – huge improvement in public transport, major investment and jobs, growth and the environment affecting Kimberley, Eastwood and the surrounding areas.
Only last month I had a request from a resident of Kimberley who is taking his final engineering degree at Nottingham Trent University to talk through the project with him.  He is doing his finals and basing his dissertation on the tram extension.  We will need some creative and ambitious ideas now!
Is this as one might call it the End of the Line – so to speak?  Many of you would have never even dreamt of me writing these words!
Well we will find out definitely (I say definitely – according to the latest government announcement) in February next year, when the “final” decision on Hs2 will be made.  I have written yesterday to the Treasury, Secretary of State for Transport and Broxtowe’s MP Darren Henry, urging the government to not accept the recommendation to scrap Hs2 at Toton and the whole Eastern Leg.
I certainly have not given up the fight at this point, however – should Hs2 at Toton and the Eastern Leg be scrapped we will need some very creative ideas how to improve public transport locally!
I accept that Hs2 is probably seen to be as controversial as Brexit!  What has not been appreciated in my opinion is how important Hs2 was to the whole of Broxtowe (not just the south), there are huge benefits for us in the northern part, and also of course into Amber Valley & Ashfield.
Views, comments, feedback and questions, very welcome!

5)   New market in Kimberley

I’ve reported in previous newsletters that we are planning to have a new market in Kimberley – hopefully from March next year.  The sites we are looking at is near the chippy and Miners Return on Eastwood Road and Toll Bar Square.

Broxtowe Borough Council has a new markets officer looking to stimulate activity – Clair Storey, and she is investigating what stall holders will be available to come.

I’ll report more information in due course.  Any questions in the meantime, please let me know.

6.   Various highway related matters – Kimberley

  • Problem with bin emptying Noel Street.  There seem to be intermittent problems with bin collections due to parking on Noel Street.  This is something I intend looking at in 2021.  Anyone affected – please let me know.
  • Broxtowe Avenue (area), Kimberley have had their roads resurfaced recently.
  • I am currently awaiting a response on various highway related matters including resurfacing of Ruislip Close car park, and the scrap metal vans on Gilt Hill.
  • Faulty lighting on Maws Lane, Kimberley has been fixed!
  • Bellway Homes Limited – finally – after several months of trying – Bellway Homes (BH) have accepted land ownership of problem fencing and overgrown shrubbery affecting residents near Hillcrest Close, Kimberley.  They have promised to come back to me on what action they are prepared to take to improve matters.
  • Dog fouling – Hardy Street, Kimberley – following requests from local residents I have asked Broxtowe’s Neighbourhood Wardens to inspect this area more regularly.  If you notice any problems please let me know.
