Broxtowe News Update & Information – August edition
Hi all
Trust you are keeping well, still in these continuing very challenging times.
Thanks to everyone who has been in touch over the past few weeks – there’s a wide variety of matters to report on – so straight down to business.
Feedback is always welcome and if ever you need help with anything, please let me know.
Together, we can and will get through this COVID-19 pandemic.
Best regards
Richard
- Anti-social behaviour in Kimberley Town Centre
- Public wi fi in Kimberley
- Additional Christmas lights in Kimberley
- Scrap Metal van on Gilthill
- Housing improvements – Ruislip Close and Bassett Close Kimberley
- Miscellaneous – residents suggestions for Kimberley ie Boxing Club, various highways and traffic related matters, possible return of a monthly market
- Langley Mill Super Hub
- New Town Fund Eastwood
1. Anti-social behaviour – I have received many complaints from local residents living near the town centre during the past few weeks – largely concerning incidents relating to the Queens Head Pub, Main Street. On Tuesday this week I had a detailed conversation with the new Police Inspector for Eastwood & Kimberley Alison Bryan. Since lockdown was lifted on 4 July the police informed the pub that they should serve drinks only in plastic cups and have door staff on at weekends. These measures have only been partly followed by the pub. The police are watching this position very carefully – they have regular patrols and will be looking to take stronger action during the next few weeks if problems continue. If anyone experiences any problems please let me know.
2. Public Wi-FI in Kimberley Town Centre – the equipment required to run then public WiFi network has now been installed. All the issues around gaining access to the Library building and installing the primary internet connection which provides web access to the connected devices, have now been resolved. The WiFi is technically on and is undergoing testing, to ensure the coverage and connection speeds are as per the Council’s agreement with Elephants WiFi.
There is also a GEOSense system that has also been installed in Kimberley Town Centre. GEOSense will allow the council to securely collect footfall data for Kimberley, using the same system which is also installed in Beeston, Eastwood and Stapleford. By using this system we can now properly benchmark our town centres footfall results against each other, whereas before the Beeston footfall counting solution used a different system, method for counting etc – so fair comparisons couldn’t be made.
There are two counting points:
- Bottom of steps up to greens lane shopping precinct from Main Street
- On the junction on Main Street, James Street, Newdigate street; outside the Gate Inn.
The GEOSensors essentially count the MAC addresses from mobile phone devices as people pass through the counting zones. This isn’t affected by the phone signal being poor (as it is in Kimberley) and is pretty accurate, as most people now have a mobile phone with them. There are also algorithms to remove double counting and counting from those passing in cars and busses. The data is fully anonymised.
More information from Luke Cairney Town Centre & Regeneration Officer Broxtowe Borough Council – luke.cairney@broxtowe.gov.uk
3. Additional Christmas lights in Kimberley – between Maws Lane and the Miners Return – this area will have Christmas lights this year. This was asked for last year, and the bid was unsuccessful, however I am pleased that residents in this area will see some illumination over November/December 2020.
4. Scrap Metal Vans – Gilthill – I have received many complaints during the past year or so about this matter. The parking by the vans in this vicinity has served to add to the traffic congestion when leaving Kimberley and going towards IKEA and the A610. Broxtowe Borough Council are now taking specific action now to try remedy these problems – more information available from Mrs Christine Danby – Senior Planning Enforcement Officer – christine.danby@broxtowe.gov.uk
5. Housing improvements – Ruislip Close and Bassett Close, Kimberley – there are a number elderly and disabled residents who live in this area, apart from young families. I had a site meeting there this week to address some of the issues including disabled handrails, cutting back of weeds, disabled ramps, improvements in appearance for the area. A number of actions are planned over the coming weeks. I will keep you updated with progress.
6. Miscellaneous – I have received a number of requests for local improvements and initiatives in Kimberley during the past six weeks – including the possibility of a new monthly market in Kimberley, a Boxing Club and various traffic and highway related matters. I will report on progress with these issues in subsequent meetings. Relating to the possible new market in Kimberley – there is a meeting of the Jobs & Economy Committee at Broxtowe Borough Council on Thursday 3 September, that will decide on the post of a Markets Officer for the whole borough (this person would in turn help facilitate activity in Kimberley) – see:
https://democracy.broxtowe.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=149&MId=489&Ver=4
Any questions in the meantime on any of the miscellaneous items and more information required – please get in touch.
The aim is to get Eastwood included in the monetary allocations for the New Towns Fund https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/towns-fund-prospectus
The meeting between Milan & Lee took place on Thursday 23 July.
Representations have now been made to the appropriate government minister to see how not only Eastwood, but places like Kimberley can also benefit from new funding rounds during the next year, to help regenerate and boost growth in the respective areas.

Gerry Hargreaves has a background of electrical installation and maintenance followed by considerable experience of energy monitoring providing technical support to the marketing division of East Midlands Electricity.
Projects throughout the UKhave included energy monitoring and data/billing analysis to assist companies to improve efficient use of energy. This has included disputes with electricity suppliers and distributors and site surveys, installation of temporary monitoring equipment and recommendations to install suitable power factor correction equipment. Site surveys for the installation of a M&T at major sites, have been undertaken and with the recent advances in remote monitoring technologies surveys and installation of GSM smart meters have been undertaken at distribution centres of a leading logistics company. A request by a leading UKenergy supplier has resulted in the installation of remote data collection technology, including planning and installation of remote data logging equipment to monitor and analyse usage data from geothermal sites within theUK. This work is ongoing in the development of renewable energy and low carbon technology.
Site visits and travel are significant reduced with the application of t-mac technology.
