Broxtowe News Update & Information – June & July 2020 edition
Hi all
Trust you are keeping well, still in these very challenging times.
I wasn’t able to issue a newsletter in June, simply to the sheer volume of ongoing work I have – so this is a sort of bumper summer edition – covering both June and July.
You’ll notice below that I’ve reinstated the advertising for local businesses. I’ve refrained from this since March, but as lockdown is gradually being lifted, I wanted to start promoting our local businesses again.
If any of you who advertise here wanting any content updating, please let me know.
Thanks to everyone who has been in touch over the past few weeks – there’s lots to report on – so straight down to business.
Feedback is always welcome and if ever you need help with anything, please let me know.
Together, we can and will get through this COVID-19 pandemic.
Best regards
Richard
1) Public wifi availability – Kimberley Town Centre
Before lockdown commenced a date was provisionally agreed for Monday 30 March 2020 for final installation and completion in Kimberley of all the technical equipment necessary for free wifi to operate in the town centre.
Due to COVID-19 the asbestos checks from ARC the contractor in this instance have had to be delayed during the last few months.
I have subsequently chased this again today and asked to be informed of a new date this is taking place.
For more information on this please contact myself or Matthew Batterham – Town Centre Manager – Broxtowe – matthew.batterham@broxtowe.gov.uk
2) Broken fence – adjacent to Cloverlands Drive & Hillcrest Close, Kimberley
Last year I did an estate tour to look at some of the council properties with housing officers from Broxtowe Borough Council. We came across a broken fence that was quite dangerous and protruding along a footpath that people regularly use to get through to Hillcrest Close. It’s taken ages to try and find ownership of the land in question (so the fence can be repaired).
We believe this now to be under the jurisdiction of Bellway Homes Limited.
I have duly contacted them about this, and when I have more information I will let you know.
3) Kimberley Leisure Centre
I covered the background to this in great detail in my previous May newsletter at item 4: https://richardsrobinson.org.uk/2020/05/broxtowe-news-update-information-may-2020-edition/
Last month on 23 June an Extraordinary meeting of the Policy and Performance Committee Tuesday, 23 June 2020 was held virtually. The meeting was Chaired by Milan Radulovic – who is the Leader of the Council. The meeting was specifically called to deal the matter of the future of Leisure Services in Kimberley, following the notice of terminations of the joint use agreements at Kimberley School, from Chief Executive of the East Midlands Trust, on 23 April 2020.
I am not a member of the Policy & Performance committee, but attended (as I am entitled to do) as Ward member for Kimberley.
I have been asked over the past few weeks, why the papers presented at the meeting were confidential. This is because there were confidential items contained relating to staffing, personnel and budget matters.
Before the meeting Ellis Tansley – Vice Chair of Events at Kimberley Town Council gave me some useful feedback in terms of comments he had received from members of the public. I was able to use these at the meeting.
My comments made were not lengthy but focused mainly on the need to ensure that leisure provision is maintained, and to ensure that Kimberley does not get left behind.
The main outcome of the meeting (and this was unanimous) was that discussions would start promptly in terms of securing a long term future for leisure facilities in our area.
The Deputy Chief Executive of Broxtowe – Zulfiqar Darr, & the Leader of the Council Milan Radulovic & the Leader of the Opposition (Conservatives) will form the main negotiating group from Broxtowe BC. The East Mids Trust met Broxtowe representatives Friday 26 June.
As soon as more substantive public information is available, I will let you know.
4) Hall om Wong Park – Kimberley
Two years ago I was asked by a number of residents for various improvements to the play area, and I duly made the appropriate representations.
- The play area has now been extended with new equipment and over fifty per cent of the area changed from a bark chip surface to a new rubber surface. The new equipment includes a play unit specifically for toddlers.
- Work is also being being carried out involving surfacing paths and steps in the woodland at the top of the site.
- There will also be some new fencing and entrance gates along Eastwood Road.
- Later this year the plan is to include volunteers planting woodland wildflowers and bluebells in the woodland.
For more information please let me know.

I reported at the time that Western Power were due to undertake further work this summer, this time in the vicinity of Main Street (near Orchard Street) Kimberley – regarding an underground pipe
that is 70 years old, and is in need of replacement.
I’ve been in touch with Western Power again – to try and find out when the intended work will now take place, and to try and ensure that adequate notice is given and much better traffic flow is achieved.
We can’t have the traffic chaos that previously brought Kimberley largely to a grinding halt.
They undertaken to come back to me as soon as their definite plans are known, and I’ll update you all as soon as I have more substantive information.
8) Horse Fair Nuthall

I have seen this post today and have been liaising with other officers in Broxtowe to check if anyone has received contact from the organisers requesting any such meeting. It would appear that no such meeting has been arranged and no contact from the organisers has been received.
Contact will be made via the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) to the organisers encouraging them to postpone any plans they may have for an event in July.
Kind regards

Gerry Hargreaves has a background of electrical installation and maintenance followed by considerable experience of energy monitoring providing technical support to the marketing division of East Midlands Electricity.
Projects throughout the UKhave included energy monitoring and data/billing analysis to assist companies to improve efficient use of energy. This has included disputes with electricity suppliers and distributors and site surveys, installation of temporary monitoring equipment and recommendations to install suitable power factor correction equipment. Site surveys for the installation of a M&T at major sites, have been undertaken and with the recent advances in remote monitoring technologies surveys and installation of GSM smart meters have been undertaken at distribution centres of a leading logistics company. A request by a leading UKenergy supplier has resulted in the installation of remote data collection technology, including planning and installation of remote data logging equipment to monitor and analyse usage data from geothermal sites within theUK. This work is ongoing in the development of renewable energy and low carbon technology.
Site visits and travel are significant reduced with the application of t-mac technology.
