Broxtowe News Update & Information – June & July 2020 edition

Hi all

Trust you are keeping well, still in these very challenging times.

I wasn’t able to issue a newsletter in June, simply to the sheer volume of ongoing work I have – so this is a sort of bumper summer edition – covering both June and July.

You’ll notice below that I’ve reinstated the advertising for local businesses.  I’ve refrained from this since March, but as lockdown is gradually being lifted, I wanted to start promoting our local businesses again.

If any of you who advertise here wanting any content updating, please let me know.

Thanks to everyone who has been in touch over the past few weeks – there’s lots to report on – so straight down to business.

Feedback is always welcome and if ever you need help with anything, please let me know.

Together, we can and will get through this COVID-19 pandemic.

Best regards

Broxtowe News Update & Information – June & July 2020 edition

1) Public wifi availability – Kimberley Town Centre

Before lockdown commenced a date was provisionally agreed for Monday 30 March 2020 for final installation and completion in Kimberley of all the technical equipment necessary for free wifi to operate in the town centre.

Due to COVID-19 the asbestos checks from ARC the contractor in this instance have had to be delayed during the last few months.

I have subsequently chased this again today and asked to be informed of a new date this is taking place.

For more information on this please contact myself or Matthew Batterham – Town Centre Manager – Broxtowe –

2)  Broken fence – adjacent to Cloverlands Drive & Hillcrest Close, Kimberley

Last year I did an estate tour to look at some of the council properties with housing officers from Broxtowe Borough Council.  We came across a broken fence that was quite dangerous and protruding along a footpath that people regularly use to get through to Hillcrest Close.  It’s taken ages to try and find ownership of the land in question (so the fence can be repaired).

We believe this now to be under the jurisdiction of Bellway Homes Limited.

I have duly contacted them about this, and when I have more information I will let you know.

3) Kimberley Leisure Centre

I covered the background to this in great detail in my previous May newsletter at item 4:

Last month on 23 June an Extraordinary meeting of the Policy and Performance Committee Tuesday, 23 June 2020 was held virtually. The meeting was Chaired by Milan Radulovic – who is the Leader of the Council. The meeting was specifically called to deal the matter of the future of Leisure Services in Kimberley, following the notice of terminations of the joint use agreements at Kimberley School, from Chief Executive of the East Midlands Trust, on 23 April 2020.

I am not a member of the Policy & Performance committee, but attended (as I am entitled to do) as Ward member for Kimberley.

I have been asked over the past few weeks, why the papers presented at the meeting were confidential. This is because there were confidential items contained relating to staffing, personnel and budget matters.

Before the meeting Ellis Tansley – Vice Chair of Events at Kimberley Town Council gave me some useful feedback in terms of comments he had received from members of the public. I was able to use these at the meeting.

My comments made were not lengthy but focused mainly on the need to ensure that leisure provision is maintained, and to ensure that Kimberley does not get left behind.

The main outcome of the meeting (and this was unanimous) was that discussions would start promptly in terms of securing a long term future for leisure facilities in our area.

The Deputy Chief Executive of Broxtowe – Zulfiqar Darr, & the Leader of the Council Milan Radulovic & the Leader of the Opposition (Conservatives) will form the main negotiating group from Broxtowe BC. The East Mids Trust met Broxtowe representatives Friday 26 June.

As soon as more substantive public information is available, I will let you know.

4) Hall om Wong Park – Kimberley

Two years ago I was asked by a number of residents for various improvements to the play area, and I duly made the appropriate representations.

  • The play area has now been extended with new equipment and over fifty per cent of the area changed from a bark chip surface to a new rubber surface.  The new equipment includes a play unit specifically for toddlers.
  • Work is also being being carried out involving surfacing paths and steps in the woodland at the top of the site.
  • There will also be some new fencing and entrance gates along Eastwood Road.
  • Later this year the plan is to include volunteers planting woodland wildflowers and bluebells in the woodland.

For more information please let me know.

5) Backlog of work on various issues in Kimberley – delayed due to COVID-19
There’s a range of projects I have been working on that have inevitably been delayed due to the pandemic including negotiations on the cinema proposal at Giltbrook Retail Park, transport specifically for elderly people in north Broxtowe, possible return of Kimberley Farmers Market, demolition of a wall on Ruislip Close and a number of footpath issues in and around the area.
Again, now as lockdown is gradually easing, I’m starting to find out how these matters can be taken forward.  I’ll update you in August on each of these matters – it’s not easy at this point to say which projects will survive, as the landscape ahead is somewhat uncertain, however I’ll be doing my best to ensure real progress is made wherever possible.
Some of you have also been in touch over the past few weeks with new projects and ideas, including range of matters around Hardy Street – again – I’ll cover this next month.
6)   Meeting with Darren Henry MP for Broxtowe
On Friday 12 June I had a virtual meeting with Darren – he wanted to learn more about Kimberley and specific areas he could help with.
We discussed the tram extension, issues surrounding Hs2 and Kimberley Leisure Centre.  I’ve sent Darren very detailed background reports relating to the tram.
He was especially keen to know about was any “quick wins” – where there are existing smaller projects and requests that he could apply to the government for to help on pressing matters during the next few years.  I mentioned in particular the need for extra funding to help with existing traffic problems in two specific parts of Kimberley.  I touched upon much of the consultation work that had been done in previous years – especially around Maws Lane, Hardy Street and also Swingate Kimberley – that regretfully the County Council had largely disregarded:
So I’ve  duly asked him for help for funding to the County Council for funding in both areas above.
I also mentioned the requests for more Zebra Crossings in Kimberley (especially near Gilthill Primary School).
I’m currently awaiting a response from Darren – and when I have more information I will let you know.
7)  Western Power – major work expected in Kimberley
Many of you may remember the serious traffic problems that occurred in Kimberley in the run up to Christmas last year.  I covered the details at item 2:

I reported at the time that Western Power were due to undertake further work this summer, this time in the vicinity of Main Street (near Orchard Street) Kimberley – regarding an underground pipe

that is 70 years old, and is in need of replacement.

I’ve been in touch with Western Power again – to try and find out when the intended work will now take place, and to try and ensure that adequate notice is given and much better traffic flow is achieved.

We can’t have the traffic chaos that previously brought Kimberley largely to a grinding halt.

They undertaken to come back to me as soon as their definite plans are known, and I’ll update you all as soon as I have more substantive information.

8)   Horse Fair Nuthall

I was contacted by some Kimberley residents earlier this week, following a social media post intimating a further Horse Fair may take place during the next few weeks.
I duly contacted Broxtowe Borough Council and the response I received is as follows:
From: North, Sarah
Sent: 06 July 2020 15:10
To: Robinson, Richard
Subject: Horse Fair

I am emailing in relation to your email to Zulf regarding the post on social media about a further horse fair and claims of a meeting this week with the Council.

I have seen this post today and have been liaising with other officers in Broxtowe to check if anyone has received contact from the organisers requesting any such meeting.  It would appear that no such meeting has been arranged and no contact from the organisers has been received.

Contact will be made via the Safety Advisory Group (SAG) to the organisers encouraging them to postpone any plans they may have for an event in July.

Kind regards

Sarah North

I will keep you updated on any further information I receive.
9)  Langley Mill Super Hub – Tram extension Line 4 phase III to Kimberley, Eastwood, & into Amber Valley
A virtual meeting with Nottingham City Council, senior officers and cllrs at Broxtowe is taking place on Wednesday 29 July to discuss the next steps in this project with regards to tram extension from Phoenix Park.
We will be making a key point that with regards to HS2 – it is absolutely imperative that the forgotten parts of Broxtowe ie Kimberley and Awsworth  (and indeed places like Ashfield and Amber Valley) do not get left behind further, whilst all the major infrastructure investment goes to the south of the borough of Broxtowe – in and around Toton.
We will be demonstrating how from this area – the north of Broxtowe, and with the New Super Hub in Langley Mill – connection could be made to the new HS2 station in Toton in less than seven minutes: PDFReport A-240718
I’ve now released within the link below detailed new documents (aLangley Mill Hub 07 02 19 draft 2 doc) click on link in first paragraph:
Nottingham City Council have agreed to work alongside Broxtowe Borough Council, who will in turn commission an in depth Feasibility Study, looking at the economic case, final route, environmental assessment and benefits, links to other public transport initiatives and so on.  The Feasibility Study will be undertaken in conjunction with Amber Valley Borough Council.  The Feasibility Study was due to take place by 31 December this year (having taken between 3 and 6 months to complete).  The timescales may have to change due to COVID-19 – we will know more after 29 July.
The MP for Ashfield – Lee Anderson has agreed to discuss in detail how the tram extension could specifically be of benefit to Eastwood.
10)   New Towns Fund, Eastwood
I have been asked Cllr Milan Radulovic – Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council to arrange a meeting with Lee Anderson MP for Ashfield, to see what funding can particularly be reached for Eastwood.

By way of background Eastwood has some of the highest childhood poverty rates in the East Midlands, in Eastwood St Marys ward childhood poverty rates are a staggering 34% and unemployment rates are also very high. The area of Eastwood also has some of the worst health statistics too as well as crime and premature deaths.

The aim is to get Eastwood included in the monetary allocations for the New Towns Fund

The meeting between Milan & Lee is taking place on Thursday 23 July.

I will update you of progress in August’s newsletter.
