Broxtowe News Update & Information December 2019 (General Election edition)

Hi all

Welcome to the December edition of my local newsletter.  A special welcome to all those who have joined during the past few weeks, and thank you to everyone who has been in touch recently.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Christmas and peaceful 2020.

This newsletter content is somewhat different information to usual – as I will concentrate more on party politics, the candidates and the up and coming General Election next week – 12 December.  I’ll cover some brief non-election issues first, then get straight down to the main business.

I acknowledge that some of you will have already voted by now – due to having postal votes, so the information here maybe somewhat redundant!

However for those that are voting on 12 December, and still have to complete their postal votes – I hope the information provided below is useful.

I’ll be back in January with a full community news bulletin and update.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch before then if you need help with personal casework or anything else.

Feedback as always is very welcome.

Best regards

Broxtowe News Update & Information December 2019 (General Election edition)
1)   News in brief
a) Kimberley business networking session – Wednesday 27 November, The Dog House.
We had our busiest session yet – with lots of local businesses attending – both new and old.
It was an excellent event with lots of suggestions as to how to try to make improvements for local businesses and boost trade in Kimberley.  These included the introduction of a loyalty card, completion of the broadband scheme for the town centre, reintroduction of a monthly market, looking at how parking restrictions could be eased, better signage for Free Parking, advertising and promotions, how to engage more business in Kimberley from shoppers at Giltbrook Retail Park.
I’ve got a meeting planned tomorrow with officers from Broxtowe’s Business Growth team to follow these items up, and I’ll update with progress in the New Year.
We’ll also have further networking sessions during 2020.
Any questions please contact myself or:

 b)  Tree planting in Broxtowe
I’ve had a number of enquiries about tree planting recently.
The Council has a policy to plant 2,000 new trees in the Borough each year.  This follows on from our previous successful campaign over an eight year period to plant 100,000 trees in Broxtowe.
Last week 700 trees should hae been planted in one of our parks, however the weather and ground conditions has meant this has had to be rescheduled.  The trees will still be planted though.  In 2020 there will be 500 free fruit trees handed out to Broxtowe residents, and it is intended to continue this scheme into 2021.
More information is available from Tim Crawford –
c)   Gilt Hill, Kimberley – parking
I have continued to receive a steady stream of complaints about obstructive parking (on the left hand side of the road – going down) towards Ikea.
This matter has been raised both with the County Council and Broxtowe.  The former have advised that they cannot take any action, however Broxtowe are specifically dealing with this matter now – from a nuisance/anti social behaviour perspective.
Please get in touch for more information.
2)  The General Election on Thursday 12 December
Important basic information.  Polls are open 7am until 10pm.  There is no voter ID scheme in Broxtowe this time, unlike the local elections in May this year – when you had to take personal identification with you.  I’m aware that some of you live in other nearby parliamentary constituencies like Amber Valley and Ashfield.  Again it’s the same voting times, and there is no other ID needed.  It’s always helpful to take your polling card with you to vote, but it’s not compulsory.
If you have a postal vote you can hand it in on 12 December at a polling station within your respective borough.
The General Election 2019 – a really simple guide – (source the BBC)
Amber Valley (parliamentary constituency) was Labour from 1997 to 2010 but has returned a Conservative MP in the 2010, 2015 and 2017 General Elections.
It currently has a Labour controlled borough council (this will not change as a result of the elections next Thursday).  Neither will this affect the borough council and county council leadership elsewhere throughout the country.
Ashfield parliamentary constituency (including Eastwood and Brinsley) has traditionally been a Labour stronghold – though its majority has weakened over recent years.
It is currently Labour – Gloria De Piero has been the MP since 2010 (and has worked extremely hard) but she has decided to stand down at this election.  Previous incumbents include Geoff Hoon and the late Frank Haynes.
So to Broxtowe – where the parliamentary constituency covers areas in the southern parts such as Beeston, Attenborough, Chilwell, Bramcote and Stapleford, through to the more northern hemisphere of Trowell, Cossall, Awsworth, Nuthall, Greasley and Kimberley.
Broxtowe was Labour from 1997-2010 when Nick Palmer was the MP, who many of you will remember.  Anna Soubry won the seat for the Conservative Party in 2010 and again in 2015 and 2017.  Earlier this year Anna resigned from the Conservative Party.  She is contesting this election as “The Independent Group for Change” candidate.
The full list of candidates standing in Broxtowe can be found here:
So in Broxtowe you can choose from one of 7 candidates:
GRN: Kat Boettge
ENG DEM: Amy Dalla Mura
CON: Darren Henry
IND: Teck Khong
LAB: Greg Marshall
TIGFC: Anna Soubry
I approached Anna, Greg, Kat and Darren Henry (via the Conservative Association in Broxtowe) to let me have 200 words stating why they they think they would make the best candidate for Broxtowe.  The Conservatives failed to respond.  The statements for Anna, Greg and Kat are shown below.
I did not ask the other candidates for statements primarily because I did not find it that easy to locate any contact details.
Kat Boettge – Green Party
Kat Boettge is originally from Germany but came to the UK 20 years ago. She has been working as a psychotherapist within NHS services.
Kat was the East Midlands lead candidate for the European elections in 2014 and 2019. You may recognise her from Wife Swap Brexit Special where she argued passionately to remain in the EU. “The Green Party want to remain in the EU to strengthen our fight on issues like climate change and social injustice.”
Kat has been Councillor in Kimberley and has successfully managed to protect the Chapel on the Hill by getting it listed. She has contributed to the neighbourhood plan in Kimberley which has helped to prevent development on Green Belt land.
“Climate catastrophe must be a priority. It is the greatest threat to humanity. We in the Green Party have been fighting to tackle climate change for decades now. We must act now.”
“A vote for the Greens is a vote for the reform of our broken political system. Currently the Conservatives and Labour are an embarrassment to our country. It’s time to move away from the two-party system, it’s time to do politics differently.
Greg Marshall – The Labour Party candidate
I’m standing to represent Broxtowe because I believe I am the truly local candidate who is best placed to represent our community.  I say this because I was born here, went to school here and now live in and serve on the local Borough Council.
Representing the place I call home for nearly 10 years has been a vocation rather than a career opportunity and stepping-stone to parliament. I’m definitely not the kind of professional politician that is all too common in modern politics and we should be wary of anyone trying to use Broxtowe for their own ends.
Throughout my life I have been involved in activities involving my visiting every part of Broxtowe.  Long before I got involved in politics I used to play local football regularly often playing against Kimberley Miners Welfare. But those days are gone.
Since I was first elected to Broxtowe Borough Council I have always enjoyed coming to and working hard for Kimberley.  It’s incredibly important that our towns gain there fair share of investment and that the whole of Broxtowe prospers rather than just the south of the Borough. A great example is The Kimberley Jam which has now become an unmissable event in our calendar. I love attending and hearing the many acts that perform at the great pubs and venues in the town. As your MP I will always support plans that put Kimberley firmly on the map.
Anna Soubry – The Independent Group for Change
I am standing on my record of hard work for everyone in Broxtowe and my long held principles and values.  Our country is divided, neither Boris Johnson or Jeremy Corbyn are fit to be our Prime Minister and both main parties are in the grip of the political extremes. I have stood up to the threats and abuse and stuck to my principles. I believe we need, more than ever, MPs in Parliament who will hold back the extremes and speak truth to power from the moderate, centre ground of British politics. I believe this is why people across Broxtowe of all political views are backing me in this election – even Leave voters who don’t share my views on Brexit.  The Lib Dems have stood aside for me and I have won the support of senior Conservatives like Ken Clarke and lifelong Labour voters. I will always be your voice in Parliament and continue to fight for Kimberley. I believe I have worked hard for the town, supporting the Town Council, traders and helping secure the future of the Chapel. There’s more to be done and I would be honoured if I were re-elected on December 12th.
Party manifestos
I’ve listed below links to the Conservative, Green, Labour, Lib Dem and SNP details as follows:
The Conservative Party manifesto – can be found by clicking on the following link:
The Green Party manifesto is at this link:
The Labour Party manifesto is here:
The Liberal Democrat manifesto:

The Scottish Nationalist Party manifesto:

For me personally this General Election (on my daughter Laura’s 28th birthday) seems mightily strange.  For every year since being able to vote I have campaigned vigorously for Labour – as an activist, cllr, and parliamentary candidate.  As many of you know I resigned from Labour in February this year – see link below:

1981 – 2019 – why 38 years in the Labour Party for me has today come to an end

I am not a member of any politcial party, and remain in Independent councillor in Broxtowe.

I have been asked to re-join Labour, join the Liberal Democrats and the Conservative Party.  I have politely declined all three requests.

I remain a member of the trade union GMB  and am supporter of trade union involvement and engagement to help achieve a more productive and safer workplace.

The national policy issues I am interested in include:

  1. Increasing power from Westminster to the most appropriate level, trusting and involving local communities
  2. Giving every child the best start in life through investment in early years provision
  3. Electoral Reform
  4. Fairer & genuinely re-distributive Taxation (looking at the idea of a Land Value Tax)
  5. Public transport investment
  6. Preventative measures to reduce health inequalities
  7. Promoting renewable energy
  8. Restorative Justice

Some of you have asked whether the result in Broxtowe on 12 December will affect me as an Independent Cllr.  I was re-elected in May this year, with the current term of office expiring in 2023.  My work and role as cllr therefore carries on regardless of the result.
