Kimberley, Awsworth, Cossall & Trowell News Update & Information Service – January 2015
I’ve been approached by a number of people in Kimberley about problems with gritting (or lack of it) over the past couple of weeks. The areas that I’ve had contact from people who’ve had problems include Knowle Hill and Hardy Street.
I’ve made urgent representations to the County Council about this matter.
If you are affected by the lack of grit at all, please let me know and I’m happy to make representations on your behalf.
2) Flixton Road Park & Open Space
Thank you to those of you who have got in touch with positive remarks about the refurbished play area at Flixton Road. Following representations I received in 2013 I did make a specific bid for new equipment to be installed.
The improvements have been in place some weeks now which include moving the play area into a more central location, new equipment and a mix of new rubber and bark safety surfaces.
I know this area is very popular with local people and I’m pleased that there’s been a positive outcome here.
If anyone has suggestions for improvements in parks in other parts please let Andy or myself know.
3) Tram extension Line 4 phase III to Kimberley, Eastwood & into Amber Valley
On 29 July 2014 Cabinet at Broxtowe Borough Council approved plans for a Feasibility Study for a tram extension outwards from Phoenix Park.
This matter was then debated at two separate meetings of Cabinet on 16 December 2014 and 6 January 2015 as the council was being asked to contribute £20,000 towards the study.
This has now been agreed and a Feasibility Study will go ahead to consider the possible tram extension.
At the same time Broxtowe Borough Council are to engage with the Highways Authority in order to consider potential solutions to various traffic issues along the A610.
The Feasibility Study will also be tasked with learning the lessons from the major delays with the Phase Two Tram out through Beeston.
For more information please contact Andy (Cllr Andy Cooper) – Chair of Kimberley, Eastwood & Nuthall Tram Action Group (KENTAG) or myself.
Additionally KENTAG are offering a further opportunity to walk the proposed route on Sunday 8 February, meeting at Phoenix Park at 11am. More details available from Andy (Cllr Andy Cooper) as above.
4) Meeting with Service Director of Highways – Nottinghamshire County Council
On Tuesday 11 November 2014, I met with Andy Warrington – Service Director for Highways at County Hall, West Bridgford to discuss a wide range of issues that people in Kimberley and the surrounding areas have been raising with me over the past few months.
We discussed the following subjects:
a) problems with drainage on Chapter Drive, Kimberley
b) problems with surface water in the vicinity of The Gate Inn Awsworth
c) vehicle noise problems from A610 affecting around 500 people in Kimberley
d) the state of road surfaces on High Street and Church Hill Kimberley
e) dropped kerb and other issues affecting disabled people in the Cloverlands/Edgwood Road area of Kimberley
f) other highways related matters in north Broxtowe area
The County Council responded to me last week advising that they are working through all of the issues and they will provide a full update on all of the above issues as soon as possible. When I receive the details I’ll cover this in a future update.
Whilst on the subject of the County Council and highways issues – I’ve been sent some interesting suggestions for improving the road layout affecting Greens Lane, Swingate and High Street Kimberley.
I have also been asked to investigate the possibility of more pedestrian crossings in several locations in and around Kimberley. I’ve alerted the County Council to all of this and will be presenting the suggestions to them in due course.
5) High Speed 2 (Hs2) East Midlands Hub – Toton (Broxtowe), Nottingham
Some of you may already be aware that there is a proposal for Toton to be a new railway station on the Leeds branch of Hs2. The intention is that the station would be located on the existing railway sidings in Toton. There would be a connection to the Nottingham tram system and new connections to link the station to Nottingham, Derby and Leicester railway stations.
Sir David Higgins Executive Chairman of High Speed 2 is to visit Broxtowe next week on Monday 2 February and it is expected we will get a clearer indication of whether Toton is likely to be the government’s preferred choice for the Hs2 hub.
For more background reading on Hs2 – you can read for example reports at:
6) Grants available for local businesses
I’ve been approached by a number of people who live in the Kimberley, Giltbrook, Eastwood, & Nuthall areas over the past few weeks to see what financial help maybe available for local businesses.
I’ve found out that Nottinghamshire County Council have announced that grants from £20,000 upwards can be applied for. For more information you can email: firstname.lastname@example.org
I have additionally asked the Planning Department at Broxtowe Borough Council to investigate any additional help or advice can be given to businesses, new or existing.
For more information please contact myself or Ryan Dawson – Planning Development and Regeneration Manager at Broxtowe BC – tel: 0115 917 3653 – email@example.com
7) Cinema Project – Giltbrook Retail Park (GRP)
On Wednesday 7 January 2015 Cllr Andy Cooper and myself met with a number of people to discuss progress on a possible location for a cinema in the vicinity of GRP. Many of you may remember a survey carried out in 2013 which very strong backing for this initiative – see:
There are several options being discussed and when there is more information available we will let you know.
8) Ilkeston Railway station
On Thursday 8 January 2015 I visited the open exhibition at Ilkeston library covering the new station planned for Ilkeston.
I’ve found out some useful background information for you as follows:
When Derbyshire County Council applied for funding early in 2013 it was hoped the new station would open in December 2014.
However extra work to protect the station and car park from flooding pushed up the proposed costs. Added to this the unexpected discovery of protected Great Crested Newts in the immediate area also contributed to delays in starting the work, both of these things being unforeseen.
I understand that to meet the Environment Agency’s requirements for flood storage mitigation the station car park (which lies within Broxtowe’s area) would have had to be raised significantly above new box culverts to provide an unhindered route for flood water in times of flood.
Over several months officers from Broxtowe BC have been discussing alternative options with Derbyshire County Council, Erewash Council and the Environment Agency. The outcome is that three revised planning applications were due to be submitted just over two weeks ago.
a) One (in Broxtowe) relates to a reduced size of car park (approx. half the size of the approved one) – this may include the already – approved swale which is designed to be a flood balancing pond.
b) The second (in Erewash) will be for the station platforms, a new car park, taxi rank, and improved access from Station Street, Ilkeston (going under the Coronation Rd road bridge)
c) The third will be an application submitted in duplicate to Broxtowe and Erewash for the replacement footbridge, as this development straddles the county/borough boundary.
For more information please contact either Ed Murphy Development Control Manager at Broxtowe Borough Council, tel 0115 9173451 – firstname.lastname@example.org
or alternatively – the Ilkeston Station Project Manager – Gary Thompson – email@example.com – 07825 748235

Gerry Hargreaves has a background of electrical installation and maintenance followed by considerable experience of energy monitoring providing technical support to the marketing division of East Midlands Electricity.
Projects throughout the UKhave included energy monitoring and data/billing analysis to assist companies to improve efficient use of energy. This has included disputes with electricity suppliers and distributors and site surveys, installation of temporary monitoring equipment and recommendations to install suitable power factor correction equipment. Site surveys for the installation of a M&T at major sites, have been undertaken and with the recent advances in remote monitoring technologies surveys and installation of GSM smart meters have been undertaken at distribution centres of a leading logistics company. A request by a leading UKenergy supplier has resulted in the installation of remote data collection technology, including planning and installation of remote data logging equipment to monitor and analyse usage data from geothermal sites within theUK. This work is ongoing in the development of renewable energy and low carbon technology.
Site visits and travel are significant reduced with the application of t-mac technology.
