next month or so I’ll not waffle on unduly.
If you do need help, assistance or advice on any matter do
contact either Andy Cooper, Mary McGuckin or me.. (We are affectionately known

Kimberley, Cossall,
Awsworth & Trowell News Update & Information Service – July 2011
1) HGV Weight Restrictions – affecting Kimberley, Watnall & Nuthall
Many people in and around Kimberley have complained for a number of years about the amount of HGV traffic going though certain areas including Maws Lane, and Cliff Boulevard for example. I’ve previously made a
number of representations to the County Council pressing for action to be taken in order to try and get some
sort of weight restriction in place (and crucially some enforcement too).
For the last two months Andy, Mary and me have been chasing the County Council to try and get full information on news were were hearing that new weight restriction measures were indeed going to be implemented.
On 21 June Andy obtained plans from Nottinghamshire County that highlight the following measures that are going to be undertaken in areas such as:
- erect 7.5 signs (except for access) – Trough Road, Watnall
- erect 7.5 signs (except for access) – Stannier Way, Watnall
- erect 7.5 signs (except for access) – Newdigate Road, Watnall
- erect 7.5 signs (except for access) – Corbiere Avenue, Watnall
- erect 7.5 signs (except for access) – Victoria Street & Main Street, Kimberley
- erect 7.5 signs (except for access) – Maws Lane & Eastwood Road Kimberley
- erect 7.5 signs (except for access) – Larkfield Road &Philip Avenue, Nuthall (plus new ‘Give
Way’ sign)
(7.5 = 7.5 tons)
The full details and map of the work that is to be done (there’s other work planned nearby too) can be found by clicking on the document from Nottinghamshire County Council Kimberley
Detail Rev A An obvious question is then – ‘that’s all well and good
having new signage but who is going to enforce this’? I checked this out
with the County Council today and they advised that should HGV exceeding 7.5
tons flout the regulations, this can be reported in the first instance to: Paul
Horn, Acting Team Manager – Major Projects and Improvements, Highway Management
Nottinghamshire County Council – paul.horn@nottscc.gov.uk
Overall Andy, Mary and me are pleased that some action at last is being taken. It will be very important, we believe though, to monitor the effect of the new signage. Please do keep us updated with your comments and
feedback.
2) Kimberley Farmers Market – Saturday 2 July
The next Farmers Market is this Saturday between 9am and 1pm – Toll Bar Square,
Kimberley. Do come and support your local market!
We have a committee of a few dedicated volunteers who put a
great deal of time into making Kimberley Farmers Market happen. We hugely enjoy
our work, and we are always pleased to receive feedback and suggestions for
further improvements to the market.
Do let me know if you have any comments or would like to
join the Farmers Market committee – we are a small, but very friendly team!
If you haven’t been down to the market before, give us a try
this Saturday! You are bound to come across someone you know, and it’s a great
chance to have a natter. Kimberley Farmers Markets are on the first Saturday of
the month, and are booked up to and including December this year.
3) Tram Campaign – Phase III Phoenix Park Extension outto Kimberley & Awsworth
Thanks to everyone who came on the latest walk of the tram route (click on the link to find photos).
We had an excellent turn out and answered lots of questionswith regards to the proposed route.
For more details of future campaigning work we will be doing
please contact Andy – (Cllr Andy Cooper – Chair KENTAG – Kimberley, Eastwood
& Nuthall Tram Action Group).
4) Official Opening of Rumbletums Cafe- Victoria Street, Kimberley
This is taking place on Saturday at 10am. I’ve mentioned
Rumbletums and their vision before - to provide training, life skills and
employment opportunities for young people with a learning disability. It’s
a really exciting venture and it’s going to be a great local cafe facility.
Do pop into Rumbletums Cafe and more details of their
opening hours etc can be obtained from Shirley Mowbray on s.mowberry@ntlworld.com
telephone 07866 358396, or Jeff Buck – jeff.buck2768@btinternet.com
5) Meet the local police
You have the opportunity to meet and discuss local policing
matters on the following dates during July:
- Wednesday 6 July, Sainsbury’s supermarket, Kimberley between 11 and
12 midday
- Monday 11 July, Broxtowe Avenue, Kimberley
between 7pm and 8pm
- Wednesday 27 July, Cirrus Drive, Watnall, between 7pm and 8pm
more information available from paul.toon@nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk
6) Aged under 16 or over 60 in Broxtowe? Swim for free during August
There’s a great initiative allow certain groups to be able
to swim for free at either Kimberley or Bramcote Leisure Centres during August.
As long as you fit the above age category and have a Leisure Card – you’ll be
eligible.
If anyone requires more information, please contact Ashley
Marriott, Head of Leisure & Culture, Broxtowe
BC, 0115 9173626 – ashley.marriott@broxtowe.gov.uk
7) Review of Car Parking charges, Kimberley
Andy, Mary and me met with the Chief Execuitve of theBorough Council on Monday 6 June to ascertain the position on how car parkingcharges could be reversed in Kimberley, what the process and timescales are.
A petition was presented to the Borough Council in December,
and we are committed to do whatever we can to help businesses in Kimberley and in
particular those now adversely affected in Newdigagte Street and Victoria Street.
A borough wide review of car parking charges is due to commence during July, and we will be asking hard questions surrounding the continuing justification of charging in Kimberley. We’ll also be asking for precise information on what income has been generated from Victoria Street
car park, taking into account it is largely empty now during the day measured
against the costs of installation of equipment etc.
We are also aware of particular problems regarding ticketingand the “free first hour”.
We’ll get in touch again just when we know more about what
form the review will take.
8) New play equipment planned for Knowle Park, Kimberley
On 21 June I met with the Head Teacher at Kimberley Primary School,
a representative from FundSport UK and Groundwork in order to work through the successful bid that has been made that will help to transform the park.
There’s a signficant sum of money been awarded, so we should see some real improvements and benefits here.
The background work is now being done Groundwork and Fundsport UK
in order to work up the final designs and approve contracts etc.
This work is being done in conjunction with Kimberley Town
Council, who own the park, and thanks goes to Cllr Steve Brunt who I am aware
has been very supportive towards Fundsport.
I know the youngsters at the school are excited and they
were an integral part of getting the designs in place!
We hope that the new equipment to be in place by February
next year.
More information available from Jennifer Porter (Head
Teacher at Kimberley Primary School) head@kimberley-pri.notts.sch.uk
or myself.
9) 3 mountains – 3 countries – 1 day
Kimberley resident Steve Johnson who is embarking on a major challenge in July!
Steve & 3 friends will be doing the 3 peaks challenge on
16 July. This is in aid of Notts Hospice. Starting at Ben Nevis (1344 metre)
they will climb as fast as possible then drive the 414 km to Lake District to
climb Scafell Pike (978 metre). Then drive 356 km to Wales to climb Snowdon (1085 metre).
The challenge is to climb the highest mountains in England, Scotland
and Wales all within 24 hours including drive time.
You may see Steve & friends running, walking or cycling
around Kimberley. They are in training 5 nights a week. To sponsor them visit http://www.justgiving.com/stevejohnson3peaks
Why is this 3peaks challenge so different? Steve et al
have seen the good work that Notts Hospice are doing (yet they have never been
treated by them) – they just want to help the hospice.
Steve lives at 81 Babbington Lane, Kimberley,
Nottingham. His e mail is shown below, and
mobile is 07866 744181 stevejohnson.7522@yahoo.com
10) What’s happening with Kimberley Brewery site?
Mary, Andy and me had a further meeting with the Brewery Owner on Tuesday 7 June to learn about the latest position about the site as a whole. The owner Mr Rafiq Vindhani is putting together a work group that will
be looking at all of the bids that have come in for the site at the end of this month.

13) Noel Street anti social behaviour problems
There’s been an increasing number of incidents been reported
again with regards to instances of anti social behaviour – smashed car windows
etc on Noel Street. Cllr Andy Cooper has been in touch with the police to find
out what the latest trends are in this area.
Andy, Mary & me are happy to hold a session with local
residents in July (to be held at the Leisure Centre) if you would like to
discuss matters further and work up a strategy to try and combat the current

15) Changes.to Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
The Coalition Government announced in October 2010 the decision to close the Education
Maintenance Allowance (EMA) scheme at the end of this current Academic Year.
Subsequently a new Bursary Fund to help the most vulnerable 16-19 year-olds continue in full-time education,
together with transitional arrangements to help some of those who are currently
in receipt of EMA is being launched. I’ve been given some information on this,
and if anyone would like more information, please get in touch.
16) Rubbish on precinct Kimberley
There’s been a number of complaints received about the
amount of rubbish been accumulated in the Precinct in Kimberley. Mary is keeping a close eye on
this, and has made some enquiries as to who is responsible for clearing the

Gerry Hargreaves has a background of electrical installation
and maintenance followed by considerable experience of energy monitoring
providing technical support to the marketing division of East Midlands
Electricity.
Projects throughout the UK have included energy monitoring
and data/billing analysis to assist companies to improve efficient use of
energy. This has included disputes with electricity suppliers and distributors
and site surveys, installation of temporary monitoring equipment and
recommendations to install suitable power factor correction equipment.
Site surveys for the installation of a M&T at major
sites, have been undertaken and with the recent advances in remote monitoring
technologies surveys and installation of GSM smart meters have been undertaken
at distribution centres of a leading logistics company.
A request by a leading UK energy supplier has resulted in the installation of remote data collection
technology, including planning and installation of remote data logging
equipment to monitor and analyse usage data from geothermal sites within the UK. This work
is ongoing in the development of renewable energy and low carbon technology.
Site visits and travel are significant reduced with the application of t-mac

The councillors who will be making the decision on the wind turbine application are visiting a site in Peterborough on Monday to get an idea of a working operation.
From a personal perspective I have previously made my support known for the turbine
I am not a voting member of the committee, but will attend and make a brief statement. I am more than happy to receive comments and questions beforehand whether you are for or against the application. I will do my best to present a balanced case, based on the feedback I receive.

Kimberley, Awsworth, Cossall & Trowell News Update & Information Service – June 2011
18Hi all

As this is the first newsletter since the elections – with a new council at Broxtowe I’ve included at item 15 some specific ward information which you may find interesting.
I’ve also included the contact details for Cllr Mary McGuckin, and Cllr Andy Cooper – there are 3 Labour Borough Cllrs now for Kimberley and Cossall – we are a strong team, working together on a wide range of issues. If you do need help or assistance on anything do get in touch, and as ever feedback to me on this newsletter is always welcome.

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell News Update & Information Service – June 2011
1) Waste & Recycling Plant – affecting Babbington, Awsworth, & Cossall
I was alerted last week to a proposal to site awaste & recycling plant off Westby Lane (which is by the side of the Gardeners Inn (Awsworth Lane Cossall).
a) I have been in touch with the County Council ascertained the following information:
The background to the application can be found at the upporting statement for the application which can be found on Nottinghamshire County Council’s website at:
http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/home/environment/planningmatters/developmentcontrol/planning-applications/all-applications.htm?search=yes&appno=F%2F2180&siteref=&loc=&prop=
also
http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/large-static/eplanning/docs/F2180statement.pdf
It is proposed to compost green waste (plant matter/grass clippings etc, but not food waste) in order to create compost which would then be spread on the applicant’s adjacent farmland to improve soil quality. The application states that the total annual throughput of material would be 3250 tonnes per annum with no more than 500 tonnes of material on site at any one time. The application states that approximately 300 vehicles a year would visit the site to deliver the green waste which equates to approximately one vehicle per day. The application states that the composting process takes approximately ten weeks from receipt of green waste to spreading onto land.
Regarding the application process, the statutory timeframe for dealing with this type of application is 13 weeks. Due to the number of objections received on the application, any decision is to be made by councillors at the County Council Planning and Licensing Committee, likely to be September this year at the earliest.
More specific information is available from:

b) A group opposing the development for a whole whost of reasons is active in the area.
If you would like more information from them and get involved please contact Emma Torrance: babbingtonresidentsassociation@googlemail.com or Jeremy Shaw
I’ll update you with further news just as soon as I am made aware.
2) Kimberley Farmers Market – Saturday 4 June
The next Farmers Market is this Saturday between 9am and 1pm – Toll Bar Square, Kimberley.
We’ve got new stallholders – including chocolate and fudge, and welcome back Trinity Farm Cosall Fruit & Veg.
Do come and support your local market!
We have a committee of a few dedicated volunteers who put a great deal of time into making Kimberley Farmers Market happen. We hugely enjoy our work, and we are always pleased to receive feedback and suggestions for further improvements to the market.
Do let me know if you have any comments or would like to join the Farmers Market committee – we are a small, but very friendly team!
If you haven’t been down to the market before, give us a try this Saturday! You are bound to come across someone you know, and it’s a great chance to have a natter. Kimberley Farmers Markets are on the first Saturday of the month, and are booked up to and including December this year.
Andy, Mary and me have decided that we will hold our surgeries at the market – so if any of you have got a gripe about anything, do come and have a chat with us.
3) Tram Campaign – Phase III Phoenix Park Extension out to Kimberley & Awsworth
Thanks to everyone who has responded to the March newsletter. There was a huge response with 98% people in favour of the tram extension.
Cllr Andy Cooper is leading the campaign to extend the tram to Kimberley, with Mary and me offering our full backing.
Andy, through KENTAG (Kimberley, Eastwood & Nuthall Tram Action Group) is organising a further walk of the route, which all members of the public are invited to attend (whether pro or anti tram). This is to take place at 11am on Saturday 25 June, commencing at Phoenix Park. We will walk the route through to Kimberley, and then end up in the Nelson & Railway.
If you are intending to come, please contact Cllr Andy Cooper – andy.cooper@broxtowe.gov.uk Tel: 0788 440 3860
4) Campaigns for Pedestrian Crossings – Noel Street/Nottingham Road/Broomhill Road, Digby Street and bottom of Gilt Hill
On Tuesday 24 May I met with the Regional Manager of Giltbrook Retail Park to discus a number of key issues affecting the local area. One of the topics we discussed was funding for community initiatives. For example there is scope for us to bid locally for financial contributions towards zebra crossings. There are 3 that I have in mind following feedback from local residents – as highlighted above. I’m now working with the County Council and Giltbrook Retail Park to draw up more specific plans, costings and timescales to see what is possible to implement. There’s a lot of work to do in terms of preparing documents, submissions and presentations, but I am hoping we can get some agreements in place during the current financial year 2001/12, working in conjunction with local schools.
I’ll feedback more when there is more definite information, but if anyone wants any more information in the meantime, please get in touch.
5) Wind Turbine Application – Newthorpe
The Development Control Committee at Broxtowe Borough Council will make its decision on whether to grant approval for the turbine at Newthorpe on Wednesday 22 June.
The committee meets in the evening at Broxtowe Borough Council Town Hall in Beeston and members of the public are permitted to attend. If you want more specific information about speaking rights, or are intending to come along please contact Steve Dance, Head of Planning & Building Control – steve.dance@broxtowe.gov.uk
Councillors who sit on the Development Control committee are visiting a site with a wind turbine on Monday 20 June to gain a clearer understanding of a working operation.
6) Power cuts in Kimberley
Some of you will recall the problems with regular power cuts in certain parts of Kimberley. For well over a year now I’ve been working alongside Central Networks and some helpful residents in the High Street area, in order to try and establish some long term improvements.
I’ve been informed that the work to reinforce the low voltage network in Kimberley was due begin on the 16 May 2011 and was originally expected to be completed around 25 May 2011. The work to renew the substation on St James’ Street in Kimberley is due to start on 29 August 2011 and should be completed on 13 September 2011. Some customer supplies will be interrupted while they are being transferred over to the new substation and low voltage network however, those customers will be notified in advance.
I’ve now been advised by Central Networks that the work was not able to commence on 16 May 2011. I understand that when the engineers arrived on site they were unable to put the new electricity cable in the pavement. This was an unexpected delay and the only other solution was to install the cables in the road. To do this they need to obtain a Road Closure Notice from the local Council and the earliest date they could obtain is 20 June 2011. If the planned work runs to schedule, the road will be closed for two weeks to enable the work to be carried out and then it will take approximately one week for the reinstatement to be completed. During the reinstatement there will be barriers erected so the road can be re-opened.
Central Networks have offered apologies for the inconvenience this work may cause to residents in the area and would like to assure you that disruption will be kept to a minimal.
If anyone has any questions or comments you can contact directly:

7) Review of Car Parking charges, Kimberley
Many of you will be aware that Mary, Andy and me have all committed to do whatever we can to try and get the car parking charges reversed for Kimberley.
A petition was presented to the Borough Council in December, and following the elections this month we have acted swiftly with a new council now in place in and to also capitalise on the growing discontent of local residents especially on Newdigate Street and Victoria Street who have been plauged with problems since the onset of the charges.
We are meeting with the Chief Executive of Broxtowe BC next Monday 6 June to discuss how legally we can get the charges reversed, and what the timescales for this would be.
We’ll let you know just soon as there is more information.
8) Regeneration of Kimberley – a vision for 10 years’ time
Last Wednesday Andy, Mary and me met with youngters from The Kimberley School looking at an exciting project looking at how we could regenerate Kimberley and the surrounding areas. The youngsters have got some fantastic skills and ideas, and it’s a really exciting venture, that in the long term should prove to be a major boost for our area.
We’ve now got further meetings plannned where we are going to start mapping out ideas and getting feedback from local residents. There will be ample opportunities for local businesses etc to contribute also.
More information available from Student Voice Co-ordinator David Sells: d.sells@kimberleyschool.co.uk or from Andy, Mary and me.
9) Christmas Down Under Party
Yes you read in right, and it’s only May. I’ve been asked to adverise
the following event taking place on Saturday 25 June 2011 starting 7pm, Kettlebrook Lodge, Kimberley.
It’s a fundraising event for the local Scouts, £2.50 admission. There will be a licenced bar -for the adults :) - bouncy castle, visit from Santa, bbq and disco.
Tickets available by telephoning: 0115 9459631 or 0115 9458435
10) Knowle Park – new play equipment
Some of you will remember a good deal of work that was undertaken together with Kimberley Primary School last year in order to bid for funds for new play equipment on Knowle Park. The children there did a fantastic job helping to give their ideas on how the park could be improved.
I’m a governor at the school and we put a bid in for a significant sum of money in order to purchase new equipment.
Although it has been a very long wait, we received confirmation just two weeks ago that our bid has been successful.
We’ve now got a meeting with the Head Teacher at Kimberley Primary School Jennifer Porter together with funders in order to work out the specific new equipment that would be most suitable. As the park is owned by Kimberley Town Council, we will be working closely with them in order take on board their wishes and reach agreement on the final new scheme.
With regards to timescales, it’s not possible yet to definitely say when the new equipment will be installed. It’s my hope that we can achieve this by the end of the current financial year – 31 March 2012.
More information available from Jennifer Porter (Head Teacher at Kimberley Primary School) head@kimberley-pri.notts.sch.uk or myself.
11) 3 mountains – 3 countries – 1 day
Three weeks ago I met up with Kimberley resident Steve Johnson who is embarking on a major challenge in July!
Steve & 3 friends will be doing the 3 peaks challenge on 16 July. This is in aid of Notts Hospice. Starting at Ben Nevis (1344 metre) they will climb as fast as possible then drive the 414 km to Lake District to climb Scafell Pike (978 metre). Then drive 356 km to Wales to climb Snowdon (1085 metre).
The challenge is to climb the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales all within 24 hours including drive time.
You may see Steve & friends running, walking or cycling around Kimberley. They are in training 5 nights a week. To sponsor them visit http://www.justgiving.com/stevejohnson3peaks
Why is this 3peaks challenge so different? Steve et al have seen the good work that Notts Hospice are doing (yet they have never been treated by them) – they just want to help the hospice.
Steve lives at 81 Babbington Lane, Kimberley, Nottingham. His e mail is shown below, and mobile is 07866 744181 stevejohnson.7522@yahoo.com
12) What’s happening with Kimberley Brewery site?
Mary, Andy and me have got a further meeting with the Brewery Owner on Tuesday 7 June to learn about the latest position.
13) Rumbletums Community Café
I’ve been asked by a friend in Nuthall Shirley Mowbray to update you on this new project. It seems exciting and really worthwhile.
Rumbletums Update
The Rumbletums Community Café project is making good progress and is now looking to open on or around 1st July this year.
Rumbletums is being set up to offer training and employment opportunities to young adults with learning disabilities, and to offer a new café venue to the people of Kimberley and the surrounding area. It will be based on the former Hub premises on the corner of Newdigate Street and Victoria Street.
They have now been successfully registered as a charity and have recently received funding from Nottinghamshire County Council and Broxtowe Borough Council. This funding will allow Rumbletums to do essential building work to their premises in Newdigate Street and to purchase all the equipment that they need to get going.
A new logo for the project has been designed at no cost by Nuthall-based Creative Solutions Unlimited and Kimberley School business studies students will be helping with some of the café’s publicity and marketing.
If anyone would like more information about the project or would like to get involved, please contact Dawn Pillar dawn.pillar@ntlworld.com Shirley Mowberry s.mowberry@ntlworld.com or Jeff Buck jeff.buck2768@btinternet.com

Gerry Hargreaves has a background of electrical installation and maintenance followed by considerable experience of energy monitoring providing technical support to the marketing division of East Midlands Electricity.
Projects throughout the UK have included energy monitoring and data/billing analysis to assist companies to improve efficient use of energy. This has included disputes with electricity suppliers and distributors and site surveys, installation of temporary monitoring equipment and recommendations to install suitable power factor correction equipment.
Site surveys for the installation of a M&T at major sites, have been undertaken and with the recent advances in remote monitoring technologies surveys and installation of GSM smart meters have been undertaken at distribution centres of a leading logistics company.
A request by a leading UK energy supplier has resulted in the installation of remote data collection technology, including planning and installation of remote data logging equipment to monitor and analyse usage data from geothermal sites within the UK. This work is ongoing in the development of renewable energy and low carbon technology. Site visits and travel are significant reduced with the application of t-mac technology.

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell – News Update & Information Service – May 2011
2Hi all
A brief update for you this month, there’s a couple of items to draw your attention including the latest position on power cuts in Kimberley.
I’m not going to dwell at great length on Thursday and the elections as I’ve written extensively about the significance of the elections locally and the national referendum already.
I’ll be back with a full update for May after Thursday – providing of course I am re-elected that is

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell – News Update & Information Service – May 2011
1) Power Cuts in Kimberley & steps to make improvements
Some of you will recall the problems with regular power cuts in certain parts of Kimberley. For well over a year now I’ve been working alongside Central Networks and some helpful residents in the High Street area, in order to try and establish some long term improvements.

2) Farmers Market – Saturday 7 May – 9am until 1pm
The next Farmers Market in Kimberley is this coming Saturday, Toll Bar Square.
We’ve got a great variety of stalls including ostrich burgers, fruit and veg, bread, cakes, cheeses, meats, curries, free range eggs and hand made cards.
Do come and support your local market, there’s always a great community atmosphere and it’s a good way to catch up with neighbours!
3) Zebra crossings in Kimberley
Many of you will be aware of the current campaign that Andy Cooper, Mary McGuckin and myself are running in order to try and get a crossing near the junction with Noel Street & Nottingham Road. We’ve now collated a lot of evidence & will be putting this to the Council Council shortly.
I know as well from canvassing that there’s continuing pressure for a zebra to be installed in the vicinity of Digby Street and Eastwood Road. Also the question has again been raised about the possibility of a pedestrian crossing at the bottom of Gilt Hill to assist those walking over to Ikea.
I’ve been in touch with the Managing Director of the Retail Park site, and there is the possibility of some monetary contribution coming forward over the next few months.
I’ll be following this up after Thursday. If anyone wants more information please get in touch.
4) Voting Day – Thursday 5 May 2011
I’m sure you don’t need reminding about Thursday.
In Kimberley & Cossall when out canvassing together with Andy Cooper & Mary McGuckin we’ve picked up lots of issues that are still important to people – like the atrocious state of some of the pavements and roads, the need to continue to press the County Council to stop ignoring people in the Swingate/High Street area who want something doing to help improve traffic flow and improve safety for pedestrians, the absolute need to campaign vigorously against open casting in Cossall, regeneration for Kimberley, an enforcement of the weight restriction in the Cliff Boulevard area and so on.
Just a few pointers that might be of help with regards to voting on Thursday:
- You will all have a vote on Referendum on changing the voting system. You vote either Yes or No change to the Alternative Vote. Additionally …………..
- If you live in Kimberley you also have two additional elections to vote in a) for the borough council – here you are allowed to select any THREE candidates from the 9 shown on the ballot paper. b) you then vote for Kimberley town council (pick up to 15 candidates – there are 17 listed).
- In Awsworth – for the borough elections you pick ONE candidate (just two candidates standing). You then have a separate vote for Awsworth Parish Council.
- In Cossall – there’s no election for the parish council. You just vote here for the THREE borough council candidates (nine standing).
- In Trowell – again no election for the parish. You vote for one candidate for the borough council elections.
- If anyone wants information on candidates in Greasley or Nuthall, or any clarification about what’s been written above, please let me know. Alternatively see: http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell, News Update & Information Service – Election Special – Broxtowe Elections Thursday 5 May
3Hi all
A warm (and somewhat mediterranean!) welcome to this special election edition of my news update & information service, that I hope you find both useful and stimulating.
Can I also draw your attention to the last item (not of course related to the elections), but very important and something I have been asked to advertise. Some of you will remember the tragic death of young Ryan Lee last year after less than a year’s battle with brain tumours. Ryan attended The Kimberley School on Newdigate Street and lived with his mum and day – Shaun and Debbie on Eastwood Road, Kimberley. They are organisng a special event on Sunday 22 May in Kimberley, starting at 10am. All of the contact details for Deb can be found at the foot of this newsletter.
Can I specifically take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support, comments, questions, suggestions (and occasional gripes!) over a good number of years.
The only predictable aspect of politics is that is unpredictable. I have no idea what the election results in Broxtowe will turn out like, and I tend to steer away from making predictions. All I do know is that each seat will be keenly contested. Of course I hope to be back after May with a renewed sense of purpose, and there is certainly plenty to continue to keep me busy for a fair few months (and years ahead yet).
best regards
Richard

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell, News Update & Information Service – Election Special – Broxtowe Borough Council Elections Thursday 5 May
It’s election time again! I guess for a good number of you it’s not something to get that excited about. If you are involved in politics however be it as a Clllr or an MP - it’s your verdict day, and yes a sort of prouncement of how well (or not) your party or you personally have done if you are an existing candidate. If you are a new candidate it’s a sort of whirlwind experience from the beginnng to the end, culminating in nerve wrecking moments at the Count after the elecions, when the different votes are piled up for each candidate & party etc.
The elections on 5 May in just over 2 weeks time (and after The Royal Wedding) have a special significance in that there are not only local elections, but throughout the whole of the UK there is a Referendum on changing the voting system for Members of Parliament. It’s the first referendum we have had since 1975 (when Mrs Thatcher campaigned for a Yes vote which kept Britain in Europe).
You get the opportunity on May 5 to vote either to keep the current system (known as First Past the Post) or change to the new proposed system called Alternative Vote (AV). You may have seen increasingly over the past few days media attention being paid to the debate.
If any of you wants any information (from both sides of the argument) I can supply this to you - a (drop me a note and I can arrange for this to be sent to you).
Onto the local elections though and I’ll concentrate mainly on Cossall & Kimberley, whilst mentioning also Awsworth & Trowell as well.
Cossall and Kimberley
For the Borough Council elections in Cossall & Kimberley you can vote for up to and including THREE candidates. A full list of the candidates can be found at http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=21372&p=0
The three Labour candidates are Andy Cooper, Mary McGuckin and some guy called Richard Robinson.
Andy Cooper
Andy has become a really good friend of mine – I met him first four years ago, yet he’s lived in Kimberley for over 25 years and is now retired. Some of you will have met him when we have been round canvassing.
Essentially Andy is the brains behind the campaign to get the tram out to Kimberley, Awsworth & Eastwood etc.
He Chair’s Kimberley, Eastwood, and Nuthall Tram Action Group (KENTAG), and is passionately commited to helping drive this project forward. He’s also committed to work with all the campaigners to help regenerate Kimberley and oppose the Open Casting in Cossall.
Mary McGuckin
Is the youngest member of the Labour team aged 29 and exactly 20 years younger than me. Mary is a single mum, her two children attend Hollywell Primary. At the school Mary Chair’s the fundraising committee, and she is also an existing Kimberley Town Councillor.
Additionally Mary collected a petition from residents on Newdigate Street and Victoria Street residents opposed to car parking charges on Victoria Street. I presented this to Broxtowe in December, and one of the first tasks 5th May with a new council, certainly concerning Kimberley is to try and get the blanket imposition of car parking charges reversed. Andy, Mary and myself are committed to making this a top priority and will do whatever we can after the elections.
Richard Robinson
So far I’ve been a councillor in Cossall & Kimberley since 1997 and hope to reamin so for a good time to come.
Some of the work that I have been involved in over a number of years include bringing the Farmers Market to Kimberley, helping Andy with Tram Campaign, working with volunteers on Speed Watch Campaigns in both Cossall & Kimberley (the police confirmed that as a result of our actions the County Council then in turn installed the speed cameras in Cossall and the Interactive Signs in Kimberley), bringing the T1 Phoenix Flyer to the area, persuading (albeit with some difficulty) the County Council to install a light controlled crossing on the junction of Maws Lane and Eastwood Road, Chairing the Local Community Computer Group at the Library.
I’ve endeavoured to keep as many people as possible up to date with information (for example since October 2007 I’ve issued over 70 electronic newsletters – these reach over 750 people in the Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth etc area. Looking at my e mail account – I can see that since 2006 there’s well over 10,000 e mails (just in my sent items) – that gives you an indication of the amount of work being a local cllr can generate!
If I could in summmary give you three reasons to vote for all three Labour candidates, we are all committed to helping make our communities in Cossall & Kimberley thrive. We are all geared up and ready to get cracking for the next 4 years. There are loads of challanges in both areas – Cossall to stop the Open Casting, Kimberley to campaign on grassroots issues like getting a zebra crossing for people on the junction of Noel Street and Nottingham Road, continuing to work with the new owners of the Brewery, tram campaign, proper treatment of roads and potholes (AND NOT JUST IN THE TOWN CENTRE)!!
We also need to do whatever we can campaigning to protect our area from the cuts being imposed – drastically cutting the hours of Kimberley Library (and more so than in some wealthier areas), lobbying to help people who are disabled – ensuring they can get disabled bays outside their properties (I know of particular residents in Kimberley who have been hit by these cut backs – on Newdigate Street for example).
There are things we can improve on as Labour candidates – I do appreciate this. Whilst as mentioned there’s been over 70 electronic newsletters – we need to get more newsletters to everyone throughout Cossall & Kimberley more frequently.
(whilst I remember) – if any of you have asked me during the previous 2-3 weeks for appointments after May, or any specific work – could you remind me again. I had my laptop stolen (again) on Monday night whilst out canvassing in Cossall – and have lost several months appointments and contacts. Has been a bit of a nightmare – but we are battling on.
Awsworth
In Awsworth the Labour candidate is Sarah Brown for the Borough Council Elections. For a full list of candidates see http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=21378&p=0
To ask Sarah any questions on Awsworth you can contact her at sarah.brown1984@googlemail.com
Trowell
Labour’s candidate is Chris Richmond for the borough elections. A full list of people standing can be found at
http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=21376&p=0
To contact Chris it’s chrisrich13 @hotmail.co.uk
Kimberley Town Council & Awsworth Parish Council
There are separate Parish Council elections in both Kimberley & Awsworth. This means for any of you in these areas – you will have 3 papers to fill in – borough council, parish and the Referendum question!
For Awsworth Parish Sarah Brown is standing for Labour, and in Kimberley there is Christine and Sarah Brown, David Kirwan, JimMcDonald, Mary Mcguckin and Janet Pearce.
Election information for all of the wards and all parties standing throughout the whole of Broxtowe (borough and parish) can be found at http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=8631

Charity Sporting Event to be held at Kimberley Leisure Centre on Sunday 22nd May 2011, starting at 10am.
In memory of Ryan Lee
Our son Ryan was a typical teenage boy. Fit, well, and full of life! He enjoyed many of the sports, music and all the things that teenagers of that age enjoy!
He attained 2nd Dan Karate Black belt and enjoyed playing for local football teams.
In August 2009, Aged 14, Ryan was diagnosed with Glioblasoma Multiforme Brain Tumours, 5 in total, the main tumour being on the Brain Stem. Ryan within months, required 24hr, 7 day week care; could not eat, walk, talk or perform many of the basic functions himself. The Tumours completely destroyed his body, but Ryan was brave and refused to give up without a fight and he never lost his spirit, his sense of fun and his wonderful smile.
Ryan passed away on the 25th May 2010 aged just 15 years old.
We were supported by the McMillan Nurse who now has over 50 patients, at present at home. 4 of them are now in the same position as my son and we would like them to be at home when they pass away, just like my son did.
The McMillan Nurse (Frances Northeast) is one of the Trustees and the other Trustee besides myself is Muriel Dewar) She used to be the executive director for nursing and quality assurance at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary in Derby and the Derby acute hospital’s trust, before she retired. She has been a friend of my husband’s family for 40 years. This Charity has got a strong foundation to work with and there is such a huge gap that Charities are not filling at present. I couldn’t believe just what the hospital doesn’t provide in the home. Ryan wouldn’t have lasted as long as he did, if he had been in the hospital, I’m sure of that.
The Ryan Lee’s Trust has been set up in Ryan’s name to help the many children and teenagers sadly diagnosed with cancer.
http://ryan-lee.gonetoosoon.org/memorial/
http://www.eastwoodadvertiser.co.uk/news/Brave-Ryan-was-an-inspiration.6338307.jp
http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/news/Rams-officer-s-sponsored-run-seriously-ill-fan-Ryan-break/article-1984757-detail/article.html
The aim of the Ryan Lee Trust is to provide support for children and their families, when it has been confirmed that the child has a serious illness. To compliment and work alongside other agencies identifying gaps in service provision, providing aids in equipment. In exceptional circumstances, financial support on a non recurrent basis may be made.
There is a Big Charity Sporting Event to be held at Kimberley Leisure Centre on Sunday 22nd May. The Sporting activities begin at 10am so it’s wise to get there around 9.45am and walk if you live nearby as parking is limited.
The Events consist of;
10am – 11am: Bootcamp by Maria Wood which consists of Circuit and weights.
11.15a -12.15: Zumba with Louise Storer
10am – 1pm – Football
10am – 1.50 X-Biking (6 x ½ sessions with 10mins change over time between each session)
2pm – Trinity Warriors (Street Dancers) which were in the finals in the programme ‘Got to Dance’ on Sky 1, earlier in the year. They will be there to do a demo, lots of sporting events etc.
There will be approx 15 stalls which include, Perfume and make-up, Jewellery, T-Shirts, Cakes, Candle etc, Tombola, Face Painting, Pampering sessions, Rainbows Hospice and PASIC will also be attending and finally there will be a huge auction, the top prize being a Seasons holiday, Derby County Signed T-shirts and Football, and many other items including membership for the Kimberley Leisure Centre.
Some of the items needed for children to be at home are not expensive and some cost a lot of money. Fundraising is so important as these are just some examples of products that aren’t provided outside of the hospital for the home environment:
- Lightweight folding, tilting space/reclining wheelchair £2,000 -3,000 each.
- Water Genie £1,895 portable shower system which lies on the bed. Seahorse showering and toileting sani-chair large £1,252.49.
- Turning cushion £25.88 to help with seat transfers
- Revolving seat £30.07 to help get in and out of the car
- Rota cushion covers-disposable £18.28 (X10)
- Soft transfer seat £23.08 to help get in and out of car seats, chairs and beds. Seahorse sanichair midi liner £104.94 commode with support and straps
- Maxi liner £124.91
- Super maxi Li £124.91
- Mini liner size 1 (3-6years) £104.94
Look forward to hearing from you

Kimberley, Awsworth, Cossall & Trowell News Update & Information Service – April 2011
5Hi all
A warm welcome to April’s newsletter, and especially to those who have joined during March.
It’s mega busy as usual – so straight down to business with the latest update below.
Feedback always welcome on any matter, and if you need any help on personal casework issues, do give me a shout.
This newsletter can also be viewed at http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/?p=998
best regards

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell News Update & Information Service – April 2011
1) Police Beat Surgeries in Kimberley during April
These are taking place a) Stocks Road, Kimberley on Monday 4 April – 7pm
b) Sainsbury’s Supermarket, Kimberley Monday 18 April between
3 and 4pm
More information available from: paul.toon@nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk
2) Kimberley Farmers Market – with special guests!
The next Farmers Market is this Saturday 2 April between 9am and 1pm – Toll Bar Square, Kimberley.
We have 2 special items for you! The first is Kimberley Primary school children who will be singing between 10 15 and 11am.
Second local writer, Gloria Morgan, she will be launching her new book “Cassie – The Story of a Rescue Dog”. The book tells of the highs and lows for both dog and owner as they get to know each other, based on the first six months of Cassie’s new life in Kimberley. In the afternoon Gloria and Cassie will be visiting Babbington Rescue Kennels to continue her launch.
Do come and support your local market – we have a committee of a few dedicated volunteers who put a great deal of time into making Kimberley Farmers Market happen.
3) Tram Campaign – Phoenix Park Extension out to Kimberley & Awsworth
Thanks to everyone who has responded to the March newsletter. There was a huge response with 98% people in favour of the tram extension.
The campaign for Kimberley and Awsworth has further been boosted with a) the announcement last week of the proposed phase two extension funding of Nottingham’s tram network has been agreed by the government. Construction of the two new lines, which will extend the tram system to Chilwell and Clifton, could starts towards the end of this year.
b) With regards to Phase three and the extension to Kimberley & Awsworth it has also been confirmed that throughout the whole of the country, we are the only area where local grassroots campaigning is forging ahead. The work is largely being led by Kimberley resident Andy Cooper and Steve Barber. I am lending as much support as possible.
If you would like more details on how we plan to campaign further during 2011 please contact either Andy Cooper on usercp6695@aol.com or 0788 440 3860.
Alternatively Steve Barber, Member of All Party Parliamentary Group on Light Rail – steve.barber@broxtowe.gov.uk 07828 789016
4) Campaign for Pedestrian Crossing – Noel Street/Nottingham Road/Broomhill Road, Kimberley
During February Andy Cooper, Mary McGuckin and me (the Labour candidates for the 3 seats in Kimberley & Cossall for the 5 May elections), wrote to residents in the Noel Street, Nottingham Road area asking for opinions on whether a zebra crossing should be installed close to the junction with Broomhill Road.
We had an overwhelming response in favour, with some helpful comments and suggestions and have subsequently written back to all residents who responded.
The next stage is for Andy, Mary and me to contact both Broxtowe Borough Council and Nottinghamshire County Council which we will do during the next two months. We will use the evidence that local residents have given us in order to try and persuade the County Council to act and install a crossing (after full consultation) by the end the next financial year (March 2012).
I’ll keep you updated on progress in the meantime.
5) Visit to see Wind Turbine in operation
I’ve received a number of request by local residents to see whether it would be possible to visit a working wind turbine station and get a better idea of what this involves.
I’ve been in touch with the advisors working with Severn Trent for the Newthorpe application, and they are happy to try and accommodate this.
If therefore you would like to go, could you please confirm this, and also your full home address. It would also be helpful if you could indicate whether you are available for a daytime visit as well as an evening one.
I will then liaise with the organisers and get back to you with a date as soon as we can get one agreed.
6) A brief History of Newthorpe by J M Lee
This book written by an author living in Kimberley covering the history of Newthorpe and its surrounding areas from Saxon times to the present day. Available for £2.00 from both Watnall and Giltbrook post offices, or by post: details http://www.johnshistorybooks.co.uk/
or from John Lee 101 Babbington Lane, Kimberley, NG16 2PT
7) Broxtowe Borough Council Elections – Thursday 5 May 2011
It’s your chance on 5th May to decide who you want to represent you in Kimberley & Cossall for Broxtowe Borough Council for the next 4 years.
There are 3 borough council seats in Kimberley & Cossall, and an introductory leaflet on Labour’s candidates can be found at http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/?p=982
I’ll do an “election special” in a couple of weeks times looking in depth at all of the local issues, so won’t overly dwell on the subject now.
On the same day as the local elections there is also the National Referendum with the proposals to change the voting system for Member of Parliaments to the Alternative Vote method. I’ve written about this previously http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/?p=893
If you prefer a postal vote (on holiday etc) you will need to contact the Electoral Registration
Office at Broxtowe Borough Council as soon as possible and the direct line to them is 0115 9173250.
8) Potholes in Cossall & Kimberley – New Hotline Set Up
The diabolical state of some of our roads & pavements is undoubtedly one of the issues that fills my in box throughout the year. I’ve managed with a bit of pressure to get some areas treated (for example near Coatsby and Seamer Road) repairs are being made to the carriageway. The great problem is it is only often temporary repair.
Last week as a result of the budget Nottinghamshire County Council received £2.9m for the whole of the county to treat some of the worst affected areas in the county. Yesterday I contacted the Highways Department at Broxtowe to see what allocation we can have for Kimberley and Cossall.
I’ve been told the final information is not ready yet. In the meantime I’ve set up a special e mail hotline for you to notify just how bad your areas are as follows:
cossallandkimberleypotholes@broxtowelabour.com
If you can e mail in on the above address, I will make sure your area is considered for action.
9) What’s happening with Kimberley Brewery site?
Thanks to everyone who got in touch this month making enquiries about the possibility of leasing some of the premises for local business use. I’ve passed all of the details onto the new owner, and as soon as I’ve got any more information I’ll let you know.
For those who have joined this e mail group this month, the full contact details of the new owner can be found at: http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/?p=912
10) Kimberley Cares
Kimberley Cares is a new voluntary group, set up to provide friendship, understanding, support and mutual help, especially for unpaid carers. The next meeting is on Tuesday 12 April , 3pm at the Queens Head (function room), Main Street in Kimberley and new members are very welcome.

11) Rumbletums Community Café
I’ve been asked by a friend in Nuthall Shirley Mowbray to update you on this new project. It seems exciting and really worthwhile.
Rumbletums Update
The Rumbletums Community Café project is making good progress and is still hoping to open in Kimberley around Easter this year.
Alternatively telephone 07866 358396
12) The Hope Project (next door to the Post Office in Kimberley)

13) Victoria Street Kimberley - Car Parking Charges
In December I presented a petition to Broxtowe Borough Council that had been collected by Mary McGuckin who is a member of Kimberley Town Council, asking for a the decision on charging for the car park to be reversed.
Following the 5 May elections – and the new council will be at place in Broxtowe – it will be one of my key tasks (if successfully re-elected of course), alongside hopefully with Mary McGuckin & Andy Cooper (!) to ask the council to reverse the decision to charge. The three of us are well aware of the problems that have been caused to local residents as a result of the imposition of the charge, and we will do our best to get this changed!
14) Walk & Talk – Programme of local walks
Walk and Talk offers different types of walks – short and long ones.
Short Walks (up to an hour) meeting point The Horse & Groom (rear car park), Church Road Moorgreen every Monday 11 10am (not bank holidays). Every Wednesday 2pm (not 21 and 28 December).
Longer walks – Thursday mornings 10 30am – April dates – Thursday’s 7 & 14 April – White Lion, Swingate. Thursday 21 April – Crown Inn, Awsworth.

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell News Update & Information Service – March 2011
1) Kimberley Farmers Market – featuring return of the “Ostrich Man”
The next Farmers Market is this Saturday 5 March between 9am and 1pm – Toll Bar Square, Kimberley.
We’re very pleased to welcome back “Ostrich Man” after an absence of a few months. His Ostrich Burgers were a real hit last year.
Do come and support your local market – we have a committee of a few dedicated volunteers who put a great deal of time into making Kimberley Farmers Market happen.
2) Kimberley Library
From information that I’ve been given, Kimberley Library is facing a cut from 35 to 22 hours per week. This is despite the popularity of the library – new membership increased by 145% within 6 months of refurbishment.
The cuts for Kimberley simply do not seem fair; larger libraries are open longer and are being cut by only 5 hours.
For more information on the cuts and how you can register your protest see http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/?p=935
3) Campaign for Pedestrian Crossing – Noel Street/Nottingham Road/Broomhill Road, Kimberley
I wrote about this in last month’s newsletter. During February 29 people wrote back, and of those 28 were in favour of a crossing. I’ll be working with Broxtowe Borough Council & Nottinghamshire County Council during the coming months in order to try and work out the most suitable place for the proposed crossing to be, taking into account the comments made by local residents. I’ll let you know when there is more information.
4) A brief History of Newthorpe by J M Lee
This book written by an author living in Kimberley covering the history of Newthorpe and its surrounding areas from Saxon times to the present day. Available for £2.00 from both Watnall and Giltbrook post offices, or by post: details http://www.johnshistorybooks.co.uk/
or from John Lee 101 Babbington Lane, Kimberley, NG16 2PT
5) What’s happening with the Wind Turbine application in Broxtowe?
There’s some detailed information of the application (together with my reasons for supporting the application on my website – (look under blog & newsletter). The latest news that I can relay back to you is that the Development Control (DC) Committee was due to make its decision on this matter in May. Because however of the increasing interest and debate on the application I have asked the Vice Chair of the DC to allow more time for the matter to be formally considered, and for this to take place in June.
6) Kimberley, Eastwood & Nuthall Tram Action Group (KENTAG)
There will be a meeting of members of KENTAG and all those interested in joining on Monday 7 March at 7 30pm at Kimberley Institute Cricket Club. Please contact Andy Cooper for more details: usercp6695@aol.com or 0788 440 3860
7) What’s happening with Kimberley Brewery site?
Thanks to everyone who got in touch this month making enquiries about the possibility of leasing some of the premises for local business use. I’ve passed all of the details onto the new owner, and as soon as I’ve got any more information I’ll let you know.
For those who have joined this e mail group during February, the full contact details of the new owner can be found at: http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/?p=912
8) Kimberley Cares
Kimberley Cares is a new voluntary group, set up to provide friendship, understanding, support and mutual help, especially for unpaid carers. The next meeting is on Tuesday 8 March, 3pm at the Queens Head (function room), Main Street in Kimberley and new members are very welcome.
Future meetings will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month between 3pm and 5pm, at the Queens Head in Kimberley, as above. More information available from – Jim George – 0797 2573 203 samanatta@gmail.com
9) Rumbletums Community Café
I’ve been asked by a friend in Nuthall Shirley Mowbray to raise the profile of a new project. It seems exciting and really worthwhile.
Essentially Rumbletums was conceived by two parents whose children attend Foxwood Foundation School and Technology College in Bramcote. This is one of Nottinghamshire’s special schools and caters for children aged from 3 to 19 who have moderate to severe learning difficulties and, in some cases, additional physical disabilities.
Recognising the limitations of current post-19 facilities for young people leaving Foxwood School (and other similar schools in the county), it was decided to set up a community café project to offer supported training and employment opportunities for those young people who wanted them, and so – in the course of many meetings with other interested parents and friends, Rumbletums was born.
The vision of the project is to: provide training, life skills and employment opportunities for young people with a learning disability. The group has secured the use of the former Hub café premises on the corner of Newdigate Street and Victoria Street in Kimberley and the café will be based here. The target date for opening is Easter 2010. The project will be registered as a company – and probably a charity – in early 2010.
Foxwood School has officially endorsed the Rumbletums project because, although operating entirely independently of the school, it ties into the extensive plans that the school is making to prepare and support young people into training and employment. Additionally Nottinghamshire County Council has offered advice and support to the development group, as has Broxtowe Borough Council through their respective Economic Development department.
If you would like further information about this project please contact Shirley Mowbray on s.mowberry@ntlworld.com or telephone 07866 358396.
10) The Hope Project (next door to the Post Office in Kimberley)
This charity is in need of some quality furniture. They can collect within a 15 mile radius. In addition clothes, shoes, bags, bric a brac are always useful. For more information please contact Denise McPherson – 0115 9167881 – denise@outreachchurch.co.uk
11) Police Beat Walks & surgeries in Kimberley – March 2011
On 9 March, local police representatives will be meeting on Laverock Close at 7pm
On 17 March, a police beat surgery will be held at Sainsbury’s supermarket between 3 and 4pm.
More information available from Paul Toon: paul.toon@nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk
12) Thursday 5th May Broxtowe Borough Council & National Referendum
Apart from the Broxtowe Borough Council elections on 5 May, you will additionally have the opportunity to have your say on whether you wish to change the way in which our Members of Parliament are elected in future.
I covered the referendum in detail in January’s newsletter: http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/?p=893
For those who are arguing against the proposals and why you should vote NO, see
For those who are pro-change see http://labouryes.org.uk/
also http://www.yestofairervotes.org/content/
13) Nick Palmer – Labour Parliamentary Spokesperson for Broxtowe
For those of you still wishing to keep in contact with Nick, he is still available via e mail on nickmp1@aol.com
14) Drilling for Oil in and around Watnall
I’ve been passed some information by a resident in Watnall asking questions about Oil Drilling in the area. I understand that a survey is to be undertaken by
Tesla-Imac international on behalf of Little Biggin Oil, who were last involved in 2009.
The Coal Authority has recently confirmed that no coal license has been issued and from what I’ve been told it appears that tests are being carried out on a straight line between Ikea island and Main Street Watnall junction with the B6009 Narrow Lane in Watnall.
I’ve been asked to be kept updated on developments. If anyone wants more information in the meantime, please let me know.
15) 7.5 Ton Weight Restriction Limit covering Holly Road Watnall, Newdigate Street, Maws Lane, Cliff Blvd and High Spannia Kimberley
Something that has been raised plenty of times by residents in Kimberley and the surrounding areas over a number of years. I specifically pressed the County Council on this last year following a number of specific complaints from residents in the Cliff Boulevard area.
From what I’ve found out from the County Council so far notification was first made public on 21 February 2011 and will finish on 21 March this year. Then it will be probably a further 3-4 month period before anything happens, dependent upon how many people object or support the limit. When there is more definitive information (and I have asked for this today) I’ll let you know.
16) Designated Public Places Order (DPPO) in Kimberley
http://webforms.broxtowe.gov.uk/AF3/an/default.aspx/RenderForm/?F.Name=tRYvyj6P2oq
A DPPO is planned to be introduced from 4 April this year to help address alcohol related anti-social behaviour. This area covers the majority of Kimberley, parts of Watnall, Larkfields Estate. For more specific information on the areas covered please contact Paul Toon: paul.toon@nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk
The DPPO gives authority to the police to confiscate alcohol set to be consumed in a public area.
I’ve spoken to Broxtowe officials about the new measures and they are confident that working together with the police the measures will serve to reduce the levels of nuisance activities.
More information available from Simon Simth legal@broxtowe.gov.uk or Sharon Matthews sharon.matthews@broxtowe.gov.uk
17) Kimberley author Gloria Morgan
Who has written Kinmers Lea – the old name for Kimberley is doing a talk at a Coffee Evening in Watnall at the WI Hall tomorrow Tuesday 1 March.

6Hi all
A warm welcome to February’s newsletter, and especially to those who have joined during January.

Straight down to business – with the latest newsletter below.
Feedback always welcome on any matter, and if you need any help on personal casework issues, do give me a shout.

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell News Update & Information Service – February 2011
1) Notice of Public Meeting Thursday 3 February 2011 re Wind Turbine Planning Application
Taking place at The Hub, Victoria Street, Kimberley, this is your chance to have your say, ask questions and hear from Severn Trent on the application for a Wind Turbine planning application in Giltbrook.
I’ve called this meeting in order that from the outset of this application local residents are able to hear directly from the applicants the reason for choosing the site in Giltbrook, and give maximum opportunities for questions and feedback.
More background information is available at http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/?p=907
2) Kimberley Farmers Market
The next Farmers Market is this Saturday 5 February between 9am and 1pm – Toll Bar Square, Kimberley.
Thanks to all of you who have provided supportive comments over the past couple of weeks, especially those who have commented on the chance to catch up with friends and neighbours at the market, and the friendly experience people enjoy at the market!
To confirm (and apologies for any confusion for the January market – which was on the 2nd Saturday of the month). All dates for Kimberley Farmers Market from February through to December this year, are for the 1st Saturday of the month. These have all been approved by Broxtowe Borough Council.
We’ve got fruit & veg returning in February, and we are also pleased to have a new stall selling hot drinks.
From March returning by popular request is the “Ostrich man” who proved to be a favourite during markets we held last year.
Do come along this Saturday, it’s a great time to catch up and help boost trade in Kimberley!
3) Middle Street Centre
The Middle Street Advocacy Group in Beeston is heading into the final straight of their campaign to save the centre from Nottinghamshire County Council cuts. Whilst based in Beeston, people from Kimberley and the north of Broxtowe do make use of the services) – it provides a halfway house for people with mental difficulties who want to return gently to a more social life rather than sitting frightened and lonely at home.
To lend your support you can sign a petition here http://www.mistag.co.uk/how-you-can-help.asp . The decision on the future of the centre is due during the next six weeks.
You can also receive more information from Kimberley resident Jen McGuckin on
4) Kimberley Library
I was given information last week indicating that Nottinghamshire County Council (run by the Conservatives) is planning to cut the hours at Kimberley Library (as well as Eastwood library).
From what I can see the hours of staff at Kimberley would be reduced from 36 to 22.
The cuts/reduction in service (call it what you will) is to my mind totally uncalled for.
For one reason the library in Kimberley seems very well used - (I Chair a local Community Computer Group) that is run from the library where volunteers offer free tuition to people wanting training on computers. Whenever I am in the library there are always lots of people in.
Second, only during the past few years did Kimberley library receive significant extra funding tom improve the services it offers from the previous Labour administration at County Hall.
I think that the decision to make “blanket cuts” for libraries throughout the county seems badly thought out. In Kimberley we have suffered enough with the closure of banks, and the loss of the brewery without suffering further through library cuts seems hard to justify under any measure.
If you’d like to oppose the proposed cuts in Kimberley Library Service, please let me know by 7 February – as the decision on this at County Hall appears imminent. If you could mark your mail “opposition to Kimberley Library cuts” in the header, that would be really helpful.
I’ll then ensure all of the feedback is sent to County Hall.
5) Campaign for Pedestrian Crossing – Noel Street/Nottingham Road/Broomhill Road, Kimberley
I’ve received a number of requests for a pedestrian crossing in this vicinity to assist children crossing the road at this busy junction. I have made representations to the County Council previously but have not to date had a positive response. If this is something you would support, do let me know (the more public pressure there is – the more backing we have locally we help our cause). Thanks to all those who have been in touch during the past few weeks.
Residents in the Noel Street, Nottm Road, Nottm Road area will be receiving a letter about the campaign during the next 10 days.
6) A brief History of Newthorpe by J M Lee
This book written by an author living in Kimberley covering the history of Newthorpe and its surrounding areas from Saxon times to the present day.. Available for £2.00 from both Watnall and Giltbrook post offices, or by post: details http://www.johnshistorybooks.co.uk/
or from John Lee 101 Babbington Lane, Kimberley, NG16 2PT
7) T1 Phoenix Flyer
Since October 2008 the T1 Phoenix Flyer has been run by Veolia. Earlier this year Premier Travel in Nottingham secured some routes and services that Veolia have provided up until now.
I’ve got a meeting during the next two weeks with the Transport Manager at Premier to discuss how the T1 service can be improved. There’s a number of enhancements mooted including a route that would include the area of Maws Lane, Cliff Boulevard and down through Watnall. As soon as there is any more information available I’ll let you know.
8) What’s happening with Kimberley Brewery site and the brewery houses?
Last Thursday Mary McGuckin, Andy Cooper (Chair of Kimberley, Eastwood & Nuthall Tram action Group – KENTAG), and myself met with the new brewery owner to discuss plans for Phase III of the tram project (extending the line from Phoenix Park to Kimberley). We had a favourable response and KENTAG will be now holding a further meeting, open to the public, during the next few weeks to discuss the next step in the Tram Campaign. More information from Andy Cooper
Turning to interesting developments – the new owner Mr Rafiq Vindhani is very keen to hear from local people who would like to consider renting/leasing part of the brewery site for local business use. Previously under the Greene King regime I had a number of requests from local residents to be able to lease some of the brewery premises; however these all fell on deaf ears with Greene King and their agents Savills.
However Mr Vindhani is taking a very different approach and if you or know of a local business that would like to lease part of the site you can contact him directly on either
Rafiq@amfaah-investments.co.uk
or
AMFAAH INVESTMENTS LTD
5-9 Robinson Road,
Leicester, LE5 4NS
Tel: 0116 276 3300
Fax: 0871 918 4703
Regarding the brewery houses, the information that I have been given is that the tenants enjoy the same protection and security of tenure they have done previously.
Obviously now the site has been sold there is a real chance for significant investment and creative ideas. I suspect the situation will be fluid and as more interest is shown in the site and a comprehensive plan for development comes forward, the clearer the overall position will become. Naturally as soon as more information is available I’ll let you know.
9) Kimberley Cares
Kimberley Cares is a new voluntary group, set up to provide friendship, understanding, support and mutual help, especially for unpaid carers. The next meeting is on Tuesday 8 February, 3pm at the Queens Head (function room), Main Street in Kimberley and new members are very welcome.
Future meetings will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month between 3pm and 5pm, at the Queens Head in Kimberley, as above. More information available from – Jim George – 0797 2573 203 samanatta@gmail.com
10) Rumbletums Community Café
Additionally Nottinghamshire County Council has offered advice and support to the development group, as has Broxtowe Borough Council through their respective Economic Development departments.
If you would like further information about this project please contact Shirley Mowbray on s.mowberry@ntlworld.com or telephone 07866 358396.
11) The Hope Project (next door to the Post Office in Kimberley)
This charity is in need of some quality furniture. They can collect within a 15 mile radius. In addition clothes, shoes, bags, bric a brac are always useful. For more information please contact Denise McPherson – 0115 9167881 – denise@outreachchurch.co.uk
12) Funding available for voluntary and community groups – Broxtowe Action Fund
Voluntary & community groups are invited to apply for funding that
contribute to the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of people in Broxtowe.
Local groups in Awsworth and Cossall have been successful in recent years (new water urn and vacuum cleaner for luncheon club in Cossall, whilst Awsworth Parish Council has used funds to refurbish changing rooms at Shilo Recreation ground.
More information available directly from Broxtowe Borough Council – Richard Lea – richard.lea@broxtowe.gov.uk 0115 9173395 – on how to apply and application forms etc. Submissions MUST be received by 28 February.
13) Broxtowe Borough Council Elections – Thursday 5 May
You have the opportunity on 5 May to decide who you want represent you at Broxtowe for the next four years.
In our area there are a number of different areas - ie Trowell, Awsworth, wards in Nuthall, Greasley and Kimberley/Cossall.
So far Labour has selected their candidates for the following wards
Trowell – Chris Richmond - chrisrich13@hotmail.co.uk
Awsworth - Sarah Brown- sarah.brown1984@googlemail.com
Cossall & Kimberley (3 candidates) Andy Cooper – usercp6695@aol.com
Mary McGuckin – mcguckin42@btinternet.com
Richard Robinson – richard.robinson@broxtowe.gov.uk
As soon as Labour’s candidates are announced in other areas I will let you know.
No news yet on who the Liberals and Conservatives are putting forward, I’ll pass on details when this information is made available.
14) Nick Palmer – Labour Parliamentary Spokesperson for Broxtowe
For those of you still wishing to keep in contact with Nick, he is still available via e mail on nickmp1@aol.com
15) Fire Service Cuts
The Government has hit Nottinghamshire Fire Authority hard, reducing their grant over the next four years by a projected 36%. In fact the Nottinghamshire settlement was one of the harshest throughout the whole country.
Formal consultations with members of the public are set to ensue from 25 February for a 3 month period until June. Initial information is available at www.notts-fire.gov.uk
There may well be consequences for us from the cuts – with fire cover provided nearest to us currently from Eastwood fire station.
If you want more detailed information about the cuts contact Cllr Darrell Pulk (Chair of Fire Authority) at Nottinghamshire County Council cllr.darrell.pulk@nottscc.gov.uk

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell News Update & Information Service – January 2011
3Hi all
Happy New Year, and a warm welcome to the first update of 2011.
Many challenges and opportunities before us all locally this year, I’ll touch on some of the most important themes from my perspective below. As always I’m very keen to try and promote and campaign from the outset of 2011 what your priorities are, so if there’s something that you want action on, please do let me know. I’ll do my best to work with you & others to try & bring about some positive change & results.
Can I draw your attention especially to item 8 – the Referendum on Thursday 5 May this year on voting reform for MPs. A very important issue that affects us all, and my reasons for highlighting this are detailed below.
Feedback always welcome on any matter, and if you need any help on personal casework issues, do give me a shout.

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell News Update & Information Service – January 2011
1) Kimberley Farmers Market
The first Farmers Market of the year is this coming Saturday 8 January between 9am and 1pm – Toll Bar Square, Kimberley. We’ve got some new stallholders due, and we’ll be working hard throughout 2011 to attract new customers as well as contributors.
Future markets for February through to December will revert to the 1st Saturday of each month.
Do come along on Saturday, it’s a great time to catch up and chat too!
2) Grit Bins and the state of the roads & pavements
Not an easy time before Christmas for any of us with treacherous road conditions, especially on the side streets. Whilst I was inundated with enquiries and requests I did manage to send on all of the requests to Broxtowe Borough Council for action. I know from the many conversations I had with staff and managers at the council that they really did do an excellent job with the very limited resources they had and often went “the extra mile” for us. The problem remains that Broxtowe is restricted by what it can do because of the limitations placed on us by Nottinghamshire County Council, with side roads often left untreated.
A case of gritting our teeth and letting things go? I don’t think so. If you have areas that are continually left untreated and were not able to get out do let me know. It does pay to persist – by way of example I did receive a number of messages from people in various locations including Awsworth Lane Kimberley and Ascot Avenue area Kimberley stating that either new grit bins had been installed, or amounts of grit stocked up, as a specific result of the requests we had made.
3) Pedestrian Crossing – Noel Street/Nottingham Road/Broomhill Road, Kimberley
I’m receiving a growing number of requests for a pedestrian crossing in this vicinity to assist children crossing the road at this busy junction. I have made representations to the County Council previously but have not to date had a positive response. If this is something you would support, do let me know (the more public pressure there is – the more backing we have locally we help our cause).
4) UK Open Casting Shortwood Farm, Cossall
The local campaign to oppose the above Open Casting application should gather steam during January & February. A public meeting is being planned to raise awareness, plan strategy, gather expert evidence and recruit more volunteers. The venue is set to be in Trowell and more information is available from Rob Bannister bannisterrob@gmail.com 0781 7176 395, or Iain Hardiker 0785 0439 605
5) Car parking charges – Victoria Street Car Park, Kimberley
On 15 December I presented a petition to Broxtowe Borough Council from residents on Victoria Street and Newdigate Street, plus additional evidence gathered by my colleague Mary McGuckin, asking for the charges to be scrapped.
We highlighted the logjams and difficulties affecting local residents now no one uses the car park.
I’ll let you know as soon as a response
6) What’s happening with Kimberley Brewery site and the brewery houses?
Good question, and something I’m being asked about a lot. Most of you are probably aware now of the sale of the brewery site and the houses before Christmas.
I’ve contacted this week the solicitors dealing with the tenants in the brewery houses. Also I’m planning to meet with the new owners together with Kimberley resident & Chair of Kimberley, Eastwood & Nuthall Tram Action Group (KENTAG) – Andy Cooper, to talk about the plans for development and how the Tram Phase III out to Kimberley can be incorporated. As soon as there is any more information available I will let you know.
7) Kimberley Cares
Kimberley Cares is a new voluntary group, set up to provide friendship, understanding, support and mutual help, especially for unpaid carers. The first meeting of the New Year on Tuesday 11 January, 3pm at the Queens Head (function room), Main Street in Kimberley and new members are very welcome.
Future meetings will be held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month between 3pm and 5pm, at the Queens Head in Kimberley, as above. More information available from – Jim George – 0797 2573 203 samanatta@gmail.com
8) The Referendum on our voting system for MPs – Thursday 5 May 2011
I fully accept that most of you are undoubtedly not that concerned yet about what you will be doing on Thursday 5 May. It seems an eternity away – we’ll (hopefully) by then have warmer weather, the Royal Wedding will have come (and gone), and memories of having no grit bins or salt on the roads , if you live on a side road, will be long forgotten.
However apart from the local elections (including here in Broxtowe), everyone will have the chance to have their say in a once on a lifetime opportunity to change the way we elect our Members of Parliament.
Whilst there’s no General Election set this year (unless that is our beloved Cleggy & Dave have a major fall out), the Referendum that will take place will on 5th May will decide whether FUTURE General Elections are conducted under a different voting system.
I’ll try and explain as follows:
- under our current voting system for MPs (know as First Past the Post – PPTP) you get one choice when you vote – you put an X against the candidate/party you prefer.
- what is proposed and why? It is proposed to change the system from FPTP to Alternative Vote (AV).
Quite simply with AV instead of putting one X say for example against Conservative, you would be able to vote by way of preference on the ballot paper in a simple 1, 2 3 order. You are therefore able to rate the candidates/party as they see fit, and if your favourite does not win, you still have a say.
Why change? As things stand at present, many MPs get into Parliament with less than 1 in 3 people voting for them. An election winner should need the support of a majority of the people. So with AV if no candidate commands 50% support, the last placed candidate drops out and your 2nd preferences come into play. This continues until one candidate has majority support.
There’s plenty of criticism of the proposals (often I would say unwarranted) – for example critics say – wouldn’t having AV mean having more uncertainty & hung parliaments? In word NO! Hung parliaments are no more likely with AV. Australia, which uses AV, has returned its first hung parliament in 28 elections.
You might say I’m biased because I know work as Regional Organiser for Campaign for Yes to Fairer votes – so naturally I’m in favour of the proposals for AV, and will be voting YES for the change. I’ll leave it to you to chew over! If you’d like some light reading – there’s some useful lings below. Debate/feedback welcome!

10) The Hope Project (next door to the Post Office in Kimberley)
This charity is in need of some quality furniture please. They can collect within a 15 mile radius. In addition clothes, shoes, bags, bric a brac are always useful. For more information please contact Denise McPherson – 0115 9167881 – denise@outreachchurch.co.uk

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell News Update & Information Service – mid December 2010 edition
0Hi all
A brief update for you below on the latest information I’ve received on gritting, Kimberley Brewery Site and several other issues.
Quite a week last week; overwhelmed with enquiries on gritting for example. Thanks to all of you who’ve been in touch. I have now caught up with everything I think.
Please do continue to send your questions and comments in, I can’t guarantee to be able always to get the results we all want on everything, but will do my best.

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell News Update & Information Service – mid December 2010 edition
1) Gritting – what is the latest position?
Arguably the largest amount of e mails I’ve ever received on one single issue.
I have specifically asked for extra supplies of grit and/or new grit to be made in the following areas, following requests I have received:
Newton’s Lane, Cossall
Attewell Road, Awsworth
Clive Crescent, Knowle Lane, Park Avenue, Swingate, Kimberley Close, Greens Lane, Noel Street, Valley Road, Lawn Mill Road, Maws Lane, Alma Hill, Brendon Drive, Hardy Street, Dorchester Road, Norman Street, Millfield Road (all Kimberley).
To be honest I have been frustrated as many of you with the problems gritting the side roads.
I do need to highlight the fact that the obstacles we face in getting more gritting completed lie largely with Nottinghamshire County Council. Their instruction to Broxtowe is ………”to fill grit bins and grit main routes and main routes only”.
I do not think is fair or equitable and have asked as a matter of urgency for roads such as those mentioned above to be treated. Whether you live on a side road, or a main road you still pay council tax, and I have made this point very clear!
I do know that Broxtowe Borough Council have “gone the extra” mile to respond to all of the requests that I and others have made, and they are also gritting outside of schools and OAP complex’s with a sand/salt mix. However this is with a limited stock and limited manpower.
A number of you have pointed out that if amounts of salt/grit was made available to “nominated persons/community champions” on side roads then people could spread the grit themselves, as opposed to having to rely on the overstretched council workforce. I think this is an excellent idea, and have asked for this to be considered also.
If you do continue to experience problems, please do let me know. I will keep banging the drum!
2) Kimberley Brewery Site
Lots of you have been asking about this also!
It came as a total and complete surprise to me last week to hear of the sale of the brewery site ahead of the first planned auction. Even the cables of Wikileaks didn’t know.
I had been involved in numerous discussions ever since the Friday in 2007 after the brewery was first sold right up to August this year, representing the tenants in brewery houses, and talking with a wide range of prospective interested parties concerning development of the site. Regarding the new owners though, I have had no previous contact whatsoever.
Now the site has been sold Andy Cooper who is Chair of Kimberley, Eastwood & Nuthall Tram Action Group (KENTAG) and myself have asked to meet the new owner early in the New Year to discuss the tram phase III proposals out to Kimberley.
I’ve been ploughing away for the past few days trying to find out what I can for you about the new owners.
What I’ve found out is as follows – they are
ALIF Group
5-9 Robinson Road,
Leicester, LE5 4NS,
United Kingdom.
Tel/Fax +44 116 276 3300
Email: info@alif-group.com
Who are Alif?
They appear to be a holding company for various firms including supplying bathroom equipment, carpet supplies and electrical trade retail.
It’s clear they have an extensive portfolio of companies, but they are not property developers. I further understand that they are thinking about some sort of business park (with the hope of new jobs).
The planning brief has always promoted a “mixed use” for the site, opportunities for small business opportunity and development, community initiatives and affordable housing.
The purchase should be completed by the middle of January.
I’m told that it is currently unclear whether planning permission will be required for any uses proposed. Alif have been made aware of their responsibilities in respect of the listed building.
So in summary that’s all the information I’ve been able to find out. Obviously I’ll let you know as soon as more details are available.
3) Car Parking Charges – Kimberley
Over the past couple of months Mary McGuckin (Labour’s candidate in the August by-election) and I have been collecting evidence from those most adversely affected by car parking charges in Kimberley.
On Wednesday this week I’m presenting a petition at the full meeting of Broxtowe Borough Council specifically from residents of Victoria Street & Newdigate Street, asking for the current charging situation to be reviewed. Victoria Street car park is virtually empty during the day now, causing many difficulties for residents on nearby streets.
We’ll keep you posted on developments.
4) Kimberley Cares
This is a new self-help group set up to assist anyone involved in caring. It’s run by and for carers with the aim of trying to provide support, understanding and friendship.
Future meetings will be held as usual on the second Tuesday of each month – commencing this Tuesday December 14th.
There has been a change the time of meetings and they will now be in afternoons from 3pm to 5pm. It was agreed that this might make attendance easier for the majority of carers.
The venue is also changing, and future meetings will be in the Function Room of The Queen’s Head, Main Street, Kimberley.
The meeting this Tuesday – 3pm – 5pm will be an informal Christmas Social. Please do make a special effort to attend, and if possible to bring a small plate of food for sharing.

5) Bridleways in Cossall – making it safer for horse-riders
After over eighteen months work behind the scenes the County Council are set to formally consider the proposals in December regarding improvements to a bridle path in Cossall. Whilst this might not seem like a huge issue – the benefits for riders (not having to cross a very busy junction at the bottom of Church Lane) should bring significant benefits in terms of road safety.
The committee meeting of the Rights of Way Committee of the County Council is taking place this Wednesday 15 December at 2pm.
