Kimberley, Awsworth, Cossall & Trowell News Update & Information Service – January 2010

2

Hi all   A warm (?) welcome to the first newsletter of 2010. It has been of course an uneventful start to the New Year.  A failed plot by Hoon & Hewitt to oust the PM, Leeds win away at Man Utd and the coldest night on record for ………..years.

There’s a whole host of initiatives locally to report on, so straight down to business.

As ever, please do feedback on anything, visit my website below, and if you need help or assistance please do contact Nick or me.   best,   Richard.

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell News Update & Information Service January 2010

1)   Grit Situation

During the past 3 weeks I’ve been approached by residents in the following areas about installation of new grit bins and extra supply of grit:  Millfield Road, Truman Street, Lawn Mills Road, Knowle Hill, Kimberley Close, Strathglen Close, Victoria Street, Chapel Street, High Street & Greens Lane, various roads on the Racecourse Estate, and Lulworth Court.

I have sent all of the requests (in some cases two or three times) to the Technical & Works Depot at Kimberley Depot on Eastwood Road.

The latest information I have had back from both Broxtowe and the County Council yesterday stated that ………Nottinghamshire County Council are likely to run out of salt during the weekend and unless further supplies can be sourced the only roads that will be treated are A & B roads. By way of  practical example the implications for us is that road in Awsworth or Cossall will be “salted”, neither will Gilthill…………

I would be especially pleased to learn of specific problems you encounter during the next 10 days.  What I want to do is keep a log of all comments/requests I receive and send them on both to Broxtowe & County in order that in future cold snaps much better contingency plans can be made, and some advance planning is completed, whatever the purported “weather forecasts.

 2)   Greene King Site Kimberley

Along with two planning officers from Broxtowe I met yesterday afternoon with a developer who is considering purchasing some of land and premises at the former Hardy Hansons site.  The next stage is for a meeting with Savills (the selling agents for Greene King) in order to scope a bid.  Both Nick and I are enthusiastic about helping to facilitate plans that will bring long term benefits and regeneration to Kimberley including opportunities for small businesses, something for the community and decent affordable housing.  Not forgetting of course the long term plans for a tram extension to Kimberley (more about this later).

We also talked yesterday about the importance of securing the long term future of the residents in the remaining brewery houses, who are a very important part of all of the discussions.

I am hoping that the negotiations with various parties during the next few weeks can bring about some real tangible outcomes, something of course which has been clearly lacking so far.

I also understand that the Town Council are also exploring some interest and possibilities too in terms of part of the site.

As soon as there is more definitive information available I will let you know.

  3)    Boiler Scrappage Scheme – switching from a G-rated, to an A-rated boiler

There is a new initiative available where it is possible to receive £400 off a new A-rated boiler or renewable heath technology, when you scrap your old, inefficient G-rated boiler.

The scheme is being run by the Energy Saving Trust, on behalf of the Government.

There are a number of benefits in upgrading your boiler.  New ones have rated efficiencies of 90% or more, meaning they use less fuel, resulting in lower CO2 emissions and running costs.  Furthermore renewable heat technologies do not use fossil fuels, reducing CO2 emissions still further.

For more information contact Andrew Pooley in the Environment Directorate, Broxtowe Borough Council, 0115 9177777 ext 3742, alternatively e mail: andrew.pooley@broxtowe.gov.uk

  4)   Awsworth & Cossall Community Speed Watch Review

The Community Speed Watch (CSW) initiative took place between September and November last year.  We are now evaluating the results, drawing up a report and meeting with the police next week in order to put a full submission to the County Council asking for a number of permanent speed reducing and road safety measures to be installed in both Awsworth & Cossall during the next 18 months.

We will also be consulting fully with local residents on the ideas we have following the CSW results on the plans that are produced.

For more information on this please contact either Ed Stewart ed.stewart@oneenergy.com or myself.

 5)   Banking Facilities in Kimberley

As from yesterday there is now no bank in Kimberley, with the closure of the Halifax banking facilities.  The Post Office do offer a limited service.

During the past 8 weeks Nick & I have approached 3 major High Street banks, asking them to relocate to Kimberley.  Two have declined to do so, stating they already have nearby branches in Eastwood, and we are yet to hear a response from the third bank.

We will still press for full banking facilities to be restored as part of wider plans to regenerate Kimberley.

Nick & I would be particularly pleased to learn of the impact that the closure of the Halifax is having both on you, and the wider affect in the community.

6)   High Street, Swingate, Little Lane traffic flow

Before Christmas a good number of you got in touch wanting to take a long term look at how we can improve traffic flow in part of Nottinghamshire’s largest cul de sac – ie Swingate (and the surrounding areas).

I am setting up a residents group where we can look at all of the options and get a good “grassroots” case to put to the County Council for significant improvement.  I don’t believe that an approach such as this has been considered before, and I am confident that with a good nucleus of support from residents we can make some firm progress.

I have arranged for the first meeting to be held on Thursday 4 February 7pm at Churchills Bar & Diner on Main Street.

If you are intending coming – if you could drop me a brief note confirming this, and if you are unavailable and want to send any written comments in – please do so.

Please do come and get involved!

 7)   T1 Phoenix Flyer via Swingate

t1 poster jan10

At the attachment (above) shows the new route that the T1 will be taking as from Monday.  This is in response to requests from requests of residents in the Swingate for additional bus services.

With regards to the cancellation of the 555 service Heanor to QMC, via Kimberley from the end of December I have had two meetings postponed that were due to look at getting some bus journeys retained.  I am now due to meet with Veolia and the QMC either next week or on 18 January.

When more information is available I will let you know.

 8)   Burns night at Churchills – Bar diner & restaurant

Churchills are hosting a special Burns Night celebration on Monday 25 January.  Rabbie Burns was a Scottish poet, famous for writing amongst other works The Lea Rig and My Love is like a Red, Red Rose.  There’s a unique Scottish flavour to the menu available and there will also be entertainment provided by Scott Anson (has appeared in London’s West End – Miss Saigon, Les Miserable’s and the Blood Brothers”.

For more information ring Churchills 0115 9384664

 9)   Power cuts in High Street, Laverock Close area, Kimberley

Both Nick and I, along with a number of residents have raised concerns with Central Networks (CN) about the frequency of power cuts that have been taking place.

We are due to have a meeting with CN next week, in order to thrash out some long term solutions.

Please get in touch for any more information.

 10)   Open casting – Cossall & Trowell

Work is ongoing in the background to oppose the proposed open casting in the Cossall & Trowell area. A further meeting is to take place next Wednesday (13/1)  and for more information contact Iain Hardiker iain@kaylee.uk.com

 11)   Farmers Markets Kimberley – 2010

I’m having a meeting with all of the Traders next week in order to plan our strategy and dates for 2010.  There’s been some excellent feedback and suggestions for future improvement from you all, and these will all be discussed next week.

I’ve had it confirmed yesterday that we will be having new stalls this year such as home made chocolate.

If anyone would like to come to the meeting next week and wants further detail, please let me know.

We’ll announce the dates for 2010 Markets towards the end of the month.

 12)   Kimberley, Eastwood & Nuthall Tram Action Group KENTAG

Some excellent work is being undertaken by Kimberley resident Andy Cooper in order to drive forwards the plans for a tram extension out to Kimberley.  During the next 4 months there will be for example a leafleting campaign, aimed at securing support for funding for a feasibility study.

More information available from Andy Cooper usercp6695@aol.com

 13)   Three short local histories are available by J. M. Lee.

They are entitled respectively: ‘A Brief History of Kimberley, A Brief History of Watnall and ‘A Brief History of Awsworth’, and cover the period from the Battle of Hastings right up to the present day, in as much detail as space allows. They can be loaned or purchased and details are available from the website http://www.johnshistorybooks.co.uk/ or by sending an email to john@jandslee.plus.com

John is currently researching another booklet in the series, on Newthorpe, to be called, surprisingly, ‘A Brief History of Newthorpe’, and he is seeking any information which local residents care to offer for possible inclusion. Again further details can be obtained from website, or from the email address shown above.

 In brief

Responses from the County Council are still awaited on such issues as 1) yellow lines for Newdigate Street, 2) noise reduction measures A610 3) road safety improvements Eastwood Road (near Hall om Wong), Residents Car Parking James Street, 4) Newdigate Street improvements.

It’s also not too late to get your requests in for a Neighbourhood Pride bid for your street.  I’ve had some interesting requests for far!

If you would like to see any specific improvements in your area, whatever they are, please get in touch (no later than 31 January).

Car parking charges in Kimberley – when final details are out I will let you know.

Eastwood Road Action Group – Complaint to County Council – a meeting is being held next Thursday 14/1 at County Hall to discuss the County Council’s abject failure to properly sort the traffic problems out at the Awsworth Lane/Maws Lane junction.

Work is ongoing with horseriders, Nottnghamshire County Council & the Borough in the Cossall area to make it safer for riders and open up some of the bridleways.  For more information contact steve.fisher@broxtowe.gov.uk or stephen.tipping@nottscc.gov.uk

Kimberley, Awsworth, Cossall & Trowell News update & Information Service – December 2009

1

Hi all,

If I may, and hope it’s not too early, I’ll wish you all a very happy Christmas and peaceful New Year.   Am I the first person to wish season’s greetings?  Yes December is nearly upon us.

As usual November has been an extremely busy month, so there’s lots of new to report, so I won’t waffle on too long.

Don’t forget that it’s the light switch on tonight in Kimberley (lots of activities I’m told are underway from 6pm onwards).

Please do continue to send all of your comments and feedback in.  Also if there’s any personal casework you need help with, do get in touch.

best regards

Richard

Just a quick note about my website (immediately above).  It’s  having a significant makeover (not Trinny and Susannah style), but will be packed with a lot of new features, that I’m really excited about.  Whilst this is being done if you visit the site for the next few days you will only see what is in a revised “draft” format.  When everything is finished I’ll let you know.

Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell
News update & Information Service – December 2009

1)     Kimberley, Eastwood, and Nuthall Tram Action Group (KENTAG)

On Thursday 19 November, KENTAG held their latest meeting at Kimberley Institute Cricket Club.  In attendance was a senior Transport Official from Nottinghamshire County Council who advised on how best to proceed with the plans for a tram extension out to Kimberley and Eastwood, extending from Phoenix Park.  He also produced evidence of  a study that had been undertaken previously on a tram extension out to Kimberley.

From January next year we will be launching a major consultation and publicity drive throughout the whole of Kimberley (residents and businesses alike), together with a leafleting campaign at Phoenix Park itself.  The aim of this is to garner support for a “Feasibility Study”, once we have been able to determine the views of local people.   Once we can get the Feasibility Study actually underway this will prove a very important “building block” in the process of obtaining the eventual funding that will be needed in order to successfully implement this very major project.

KENTAG has been boosted by support from Rail Future East Midlands a pressure group who support a better passenger (& freight) rail network.  They have endorsed the work being carried out in Kimberley.

Additionally on 8th December, KENTAG Chair Andy Cooper is attending an all-party Parliamentary Group in Westminster, discussing the future of light rail in the UK.
http://www.thisisnottingham.co.uk/kimberley/Tram-campaigners-Westminster-debate/article-1539924-detail/article.html

More information is available from KENTAG Chair and Kimberley resident Andy Cooper  usercp6695@aol.com or Cllr Steve Barber - barbers@parliament.uk 0115 9430721

2)    The Hope Project Charity

The Hope Project Charity Shop in Kimberley (next to the Post Office) now sells furniture at a very reasonable cost.  The furniture is of the highest quality and can be delivered for a small charge.  If you have any good quality furniture you would like to donate please either drop it in at the shop or the Hope Project can collect free of charge.  If you would like any more information please call Denise on 0115 9167881, call in at the shop, or e mail denise@outreachchurch.co.uk

3)   Traffic Congestion & road safety Hardy Street/Norman Street/Cliff Boulevard area

I met with Denise Pilkington, Head Teacher at Hollywell Primary School on Monday this week to discuss a report that I have had written up following the consultation exercise that was carried out in August this year.  There was excellent feedback from residents (including a good number of you on this list) who have given suggestions on what can be done to make long lasting improvements in this area.

I am now working with the school to try and see what can be done to move the report forward and get some practical steps put in place, that are long over due.  (There’s been a small note of success already with pressure put on the County Council/Broxtowe BC several months ago to tarmac the cut through opposite the Golden Guinea).  This has now been completed and I’m told there’s an increased number of children and parents now walking this way to school.

If anyone wants a copy of the report that I’ve had written, I’ll be putting this up on my website in a week or so’s time, when it’s had it’s makeover finished.

(Perhaps I should add an important note!  Non of the blame for the congestion is directed at the school, it’s more the inconsiderate parking by some parents in the morning and afternoon’s).

4)   Farmers’ Markets for December

Thank you to everyone who has written with supportive comments and constructive criticism about the first market we held on 7 November.
I’ve worked hard during the past couple of weeks to try and make some improvements for the next two markets; Saturday 12 December and Tuesday 22nd December (both 9am until 2pm).
I’m pleased to say that we’ve got an increased variety of stalls for the markets coming up including dairy products (that many of you asked about).  We’ve also got some Fair Trade products and for the 22nd December we’ve got a stall doing Home Made Soup, which I’m sure will go down well so near to Christmas.

Pride of place though undoubtedly will go though on 12 December to 20 children from Kimberley Primary School who will be singing carols at the Market.  Do come and support us (though I’m not sure you’d want to hear me singing along).

I’m really looking forward to both markets.

5)   Holy Trinity Church Kimberley Saturday 28 December – 10am until 1pm

I’ve been asked by a friend who attends the above church to let you know about the nativity festival and Christmas bazaar being held tomorrow, and the message reads as follows:
Enjoy looking at Nativity festival  scenes made by local families (even from Lego).

SANTA!!, games and huge bargains, bacon cobs etc. at Christmas Bazaar THIS SATURDAY!

A fun way to spend your morning .

More information available from Margaret Turner: margarell@btinternet.com

6)   High Street Kimberley – One Way System

This is becoming an increasing concern for a number of residents and I’m starting to get increased complaints from people living along amongst other areas, High Street, Ruby Paddocks, Dale and Dawver Roads, with drivers continually flouting the One Way system.  It’s even made the local newspaper this week: http://www.eastwoodadvertiser.co.uk/news/Campaign-to-stop-Kimberley-drivers.5860346.jp

What I’d like to do is set up a Working Group of residents who would be prepared to meet up in January (meet say in the Nelson & Railway) one evening to start off with, and get a consensus on how we can take this forward.  I know there’s some diverse views about to make improvements, but I am interested in particular with one in particular of getting a fixed camera to try and help catch the culprits.
Whatever agreement is reached we need some public pressure to help get the County Council to budge.  Anyone who would like to help therefore would be most welcome.

If you are able and willing and would like to get involved, just drop me a note by 15th December.

On I think on a related note there’s been scores of complaints about the Severn Trent works along Nottingham Road into Kimberley that have caused such long traffic queues.  Working together with Nick we’ve chased Severn Trent and believe we’ve got an abatement until the New Year.

7)   Neighbourhood Price 2010/11

I’ve got the opportunity to bid for up to £50k for Kimberley & Cossall, for any specific areas where you would like to see a facelift in the community.  Whether this be on parks, open spaces or streets, I’ll make a robust case for money to come our way.  Before I’ve had some success in getting extra play equipment for Millfield Park and some improvements in the Hillcrest Close area.

It’s for you to decide though and I’ll be led by what you say.

I’ll work together with Mel (Cllr Crow) in order to try and maximise the best opportunities for our area.  If you can let me know by 12 January what your priorities are that would be great.

8)    Complaint about the County Council – bus stop Eastwood Road

The County Council have made an abysmal job concerning the so called “improvements” at the junction of Maws Lane and Eastwood Road.  Yes they responded to the Eastwood Road Action Group request to put a zebra crossing in, but they have done NOTHING about the bus stop problems.  Traffic queues over the junction, probably worse now than in months gone by.  I’m due to attend a meeting at County Hall during December or January to try and get some sort of resolution, taking into account all of the complaints residents continue to make.

Please get in touch for any more information.

9)   Awsworth & Cossall Community Speed Watch

A small group of volunteers have done a terrific job monitoring the speed of traffic in various locations through Awsworth & Cossal during the past two months.  Thanks in particular to Ed Stewart and Simon Robinson (no relation) for all of their endeavours.   We are going to review the progress so far during the next couple of weeks and plan for the future.

For more information please contact: simonrobinson_7@hotmail.com or Ed Stewart Ed.Stewart@eonenergy.com

10)   Double Yellow Lines Newdigate Street, Kimberley (opposite The Kimberley School)

Many of you will recall the extensive work that has been done here over the past 18 months (following initially an approach by a number of residents to Nick Palmer last June).  We’ve since had several public meetings, I’ve met with the school and worked up a bid to put to the County Council to release funds to make improvements along Newdigate Street etc.

I’ve asked repeatedly for information from the County Council and it’s not really that forthcoming.  Yesterday I was told of a loose open-ended commitment to put the yellow lines (to stop the dangerous parking) that “may be in place by March next year”.  I’ll keep chasing until we get a proper answer.

The problem we up against are two fold 1) a Conservative Controlled County Council who are hell bent on cutting everything in site 2) an inept Lib Dem County Councillor for Kimberley (Ken Rigby – you know the only Councillor in Kimberley who’s voted in favour of car parking charges).  He’s been of no assistance whatsoever to all of the campaigning and ground work we have done over the past 18 months.

Thanks in particular does go however to Margaret Betteridge and Michael and Eileen O’Connell of Newdigate Street, who amongst others, have been very helpful and supportive during the length of this campaign.

11)    T1 – revised route via Swingate from Monday 30 November

As reported in the last update we’ve got a revised service for the T1 Phoenix Flyer going up Swingate during the evenings and all day Sundays from next week.  If anyone has not got a timetable, please let me know and I’ll get one to you.

12)    Banking Facilities in Kimberley

Nick and I have approached three banks in Kimberley with a view to opening a branch in Kimberley, utilising the premises at the current Halifax branch.  From 8 January 2001 the Halifax banking facilities in Kimberley will cease to be in existence.

We’ve been turned down by one bank, and are now awaiting the response from two others.

I have been asked to let you know about an information event the Halifax in Kimberley are putting on tomorrow – Saturday between 9am and 12 noon.  Two qualified Banking Advisers will be on hand to advise current Halifax customers on the easiest way to access accounts once the branch counter has closed.
For more details:
DanielWagstaff@Halifax.co.uk
Branch phone number:  01159 385464

13)    Greene King site

Nick and I have a meeting with a potential interested party for part of the site on Friday 11 December.  We’ll let you know the outcome in due course.

Cossall and Kimberley News Update and Information Service Mid-November 2009

1

Hi all,
A brief update mid November, with several items to draw to let you know about.

  • I’ve been asked by a friend in Kimberley Roger Grimes, to let you know about an exhibition he’s currently running at Kimberley Library (please see below for more details).
  • The next meeting of KENTAG (Kimberley, Eastwood & Nuthall Tram Action Group) is taking place this Thursday coming (again more details below).
  • There’s also news on the revised bus services for Swingate (T1 Phoenix Flyer), banking, the ongoing saga with the bus stop at the junction of Eastwood Road/Maws Lane and the latest police beat surgery in Kimberley.

Can I also take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support, feedback and comments with regards to the Farmers Market last Saturday. This was the first time in over twenty years we’d had a market in Kimberley. The overwhelming view seems to be that it was really enjoyable, and there was a great community spirit. The market holders were really pleased, and they all surpassed their expectations by way of takings, and amount of goods sold.

There’s improvements and “tweaks” that we are going to make for the next markets (Saturday 12 December and Tuesday 22 December – both 9am until 2pm). Please put the dates in your diary! Nick & I are trying to get more stallholders to come along so there will be a greater variety, to include cheese, breads, deli and fresh meat.

We’ll announce the dates for 2010 next month.

As ever, if you require help or assistance on any matter, or have any feedback or comments, do get in touch.

Best regards,
Richard

Cossall and Kimberley News Update and Information Service Mid-November 2009

1) A unique display of Russian Military Maps of NW Nottingham showing the Kimberley, Nuthall, Watnall, Hucknall area
There is an exhibition at Kimberley Library until 28 November. The maps show detail down to individual houses, ‘your house may well be on’: it shows the width of roads the height of bridges the length of tunnels the depth of rivers. The maps also show strategic sites and detail not shown on Ordnance Survey maps. It includes a map of the target site for nuclear bombing, ‘if war had happened…’ and its closer than you think just a mile and a half from Kimberley.

The exhibition is titled – ‘Uncle Joe knew where you lived’ … and so did every other Soviet president from Joseph Stalin to Gorbachev.

Roger Grimes will be at the library each Monday throughout the exhibition to talk about the maps and offer translation… the maps are in Russian.

More information available from rogerjag@onetel.com.

2) Tram phase III route to Kimberley
You may recall that in July KENTAG (Kimberley, Eastwood and Nuthall Tram Action Group) was formed. The purpose of this group is to lobby and campaign for an extension of the existing tram route from Phoenix Park, out to Kimberley and Eastwood.

We are looking now at how we get to the position of having a feasibility study drawn up for a defined route out to Kimberley and beyond.

The next meeting of KENTAG is set to take place on Thursday 19th November, 7:30pm at the Kimberley Cricket Club on Newdigate Street. More information on the meeting and the work that is being done in the meantime is available from KENTAG Chair Andy Cooper 0115 917 7166 or Steve Barber barbers@parliament.uk.

3) Police Beat Surgery in Kimberley
- Sainsbury’s, Kimberley – 24th November 2009

More details, including times are available from Paul Toon:
paul.toon@nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk
Tel: 0115 670999 x 4870
Mob: 0752 598 9434

4) T1 revised route to incorporate Swingate
Veolia have decided to amend the T1 route to incorporate Swingate with effect from Monday 30th November 2009 – Mondays to Saturdays After 19:00 hours & all day Sundays. You can see a timetable here.

Both Nick & myself had asked for a day time service, following the consultations we did during August. However Veolia said they were not prepared to run a service during the day up Swingate against an existing service already being operated by Trent Barton.

More information available from Russell Barrington Crow at Veolia russell.barrington-c@veolia-transport.co.uk.

5) Bus Stop Eastwood Road/Maws Lane Junction – queuing cars over the junction
Lots of people continue to ask what the latest position and thinking is here. Having made a formal complaint to the County Council about the lack of action here, I have now received their full response.

A complaints Review Panel has been set up to reconsider the County Council’s position and comments and feedback from members of the public in Kimberley are welcome. If anyone would like to make comment, have site of the documents, before the panel meets, please let me know.

6) Banking in Kimberley
Nick & I are waiting details of an approach we have made regarding the possibility of bank opening a branch in Kimberley. When more details are available we will let you know.

Cossall and Kimberley News Update and Information Service November 2009

1) Trick or Treat
With Halloween etc. fast approaching I’ve been asked to remind constituents about a police website where you can obtain a sign to print off and put in their windows asking trick or treaters not to visit http://www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/newsandevents/news/2009/october/21/stay_safe_and_have_a_happy/.

2) Closure of Halifax Banking facilities in Kimberley from 8th January next year
There’s a lot of unhappy people in Kimberley and the surrounding areas. I am a Halifax customer myself and don’t fancy travelling to Bulwell (with the Eastwood branch closing also).

I’ve managed to fix up an urgent meeting with senior Halifax representatives for next Wednesday 4th November to discuss the implications for Kimberley & the surrounding areas. Also in attendance will be Cllr Steve Brunt, Chair of Kimberley Town Council and Cllr Mel Crow.

In addition Nick and myself have made urgent (and separate) representations this week to two major banks asking whether one of them will be prepared to relocate to Kimberley. Both Nick & I have both been asked by both banks to keep details confidential at this stage. Rest assured as soon as any substantive news is available we will let you know.

Any questions in the meantime – richard.robinson@broxtowe.gov.uk or NickMP1@aol.com.

3) Proposed Taxi Rank in Kimberley
I’ve gathered a fair number of complaints from residents concerned about Broxtowe Borough’s Council proposals to site a taxi rank on Station Road. In particular after all of the work that has been put into improving the situation there for residents, who were previously plagued by lots of anti social behaviour, there is a fear that all of the hard work will be undone.

All of the complaints I have been received have been sent onto the Licensing Committee at Broxtowe. When more information is available I will let you know.

4) Farmers Market Kimberley – Toll Bar Square and Newdigate Street Car Park
Don’t forget next Saturday 7th November – 9am until 2pm! Fresh fruit and veg, fudge, cakes, free range eggs, pastries, meat and some further surprises!

Both Nick & I are really excited about this initiative and we hope it will help serve to regenerate Kimberley and get the town buzzing again!

For 2009 the other Farmers Markets are to be 12th December and 22nd December.

Dates for 2010 will be announced in December.

5) Exciting voluntary opportunity between November and the date of the next General Election (expected around 6th May 2010)
I’m looking for an experienced graphic designer with web experience who can help support my work in the community, and who has the following skills & attributes:

  • A good online portfolio displaying user-centred design, and ideally some experience with web database solutions
  • Ability to hand code with XHTML, CSS and PHP
  • Strong knowledge of Photoshop, JavaScript and Flash
  • An in-depth knowledge of current web-design trends and technique

Whilst the post is voluntary I am looking to pay an Honorarium next April.

For more information, including hours (flexible), and to apply please provide a brief CV to richard.robinson@broxtowe.gov.uk or ‘phone 0775 1970 640.

Immediate start date.

6) Tram phase III route to Kimberley
You may recall that in July KENTAG (Kimberley, Eastwood and Nuthall Tram Action Group) was formed. The purpose of this group is to lobby and campaign for an extension of the existing tram route from Phoenix Park, out to Kimberley and Eastwood.

10) Big Lottery Funding – opportunities for community groups
Particularly for those of you involved in community groups, the following information may be useful, that has been sent through by Mick McGrath, Head of Big Lottery Funding in the East Midlands.

…………………Before the summer recess Big Lottery Fund ran a drop in surgery session for East Midlands MPs. The purpose of the surgery was to feedback on our ‘big thinking’ consultation on our future funding. A key recommendation from these surgeries was that we produce a simple fact sheet on the funding programmes that are currently open to constituency groups. I have therefore attached a double sided pdf fact sheet that you may wish to print off for constituents interested in funding through Big Lottery Fund. We will endeavour to send you updates every quarter. The fact sheet contains an outline of our current open programmes together with web links and telephone numbers for further details.

In particular I would draw your constituents attention to our Awards for All programme http://www.awardsforall.org.uk/england/index.html. Awards for All offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 for projects that improve communities, and the lives of people within them. It is for voluntary and community groups, schools and health organisations, parish and town councils. I have attached a pdf poster on the programme – further copies of this and also Awards for All postcards are available on request.

I hope you and your constituents find this information helpful – please do get in touch on enquiries.em@biglotteryfund.org.uk or 0115 872 2950 if we can help with anything else.

Did you know that Awards for All offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 for projects that improve communities, and the lives of people within them. It’s for voluntary and community groups, schools and health organisations, parish and town councils and is open for applications now. For more information call 0845 4 10 20 30 or go to http://www.awardsforall.org.uk/england/index.html.

11) Shop Front Grants
For businesses looking to improve their frontage “Keeping up Appearances” grants are still available from Broxtowe Borough Council. A 50% grant up to a maximum of £2000 is available for shops throughout the whole of the Broxtowe area. Eligible works include windows, signage, guttering and painting. For more information contact the Economic Development unit at Broxtowe BC on 0115 9173446, or 0115 917 3989.

In Brief

  1. New bus services running up Swingate from 1st December 2009.
I am awaiting final confirmation from Veolia that as from 1st December 2009 a revised bus service for Kimberley will include buses throughout the day and evening running up Swingate. All of the information is being sent to the Traffic Commissioners, and when final details are known I will let you know.
  2. New (in the main) cheaper fares for the Veolia run 555 service,
running through Eastwood, Kimberley, Nuthall, Phoenix Park, QMC & Nottingham are being introduced from next week.
Anything that was between 80p and £1.40 has been simplified to £1.00.
Anything that was between £1.50 and £2.20 has been simplified to £2.00.
Any return ticket will now be a TWO TRIP TICKET, this means that it is valid for two journeys, not necessarily on the same day. This is valid for a month after date of issue.
It is £1.80 for £1.00 singles and £3.50 for £2.00 singles.
There will also be an ALL DAY TICKET, this is £3.50 and can be used on the day of issue only for unlimited travel on the 555.
There will be a £12.00 WEEKLY TICKET which is valid for weekly unlimited travel for 6 days after day of issue.
More information available from Andrew Yeo – andrew.yeo@veolia-transport.co.uk.
  3. Hardy Street/Cliff Boulevard Traffic Congestion
I am getting a report compiled to present to the County Council with the aim of pressing them to make significant improvements to traffic flow and safety for residents in this area. More information available in December.
  4. One Way system on High Street
Not much support for closing off High Street with bollards as from St Paul’s Court to help stop drivers flouting the one way system! By far the most popular suggestion was a fixed camera to catch offenders. I’ll be putting this recommendation to the County Council in due course.
  5. Greene King Site
Today Nick and I have approached the Co-op Group to see whether we can get any interest from them in a Co-operative Housing initiative and for sustainable development on this site. More information should be available in December.

Cossall and Kimberley News Update and Information Service – closure of Halifax counter banking facilities in Kimberley

0

Hi all,
I’ve had lots of enquiries since Saturday about the closure of the Halifax counter banking facilities in Kimberley from January of next year.
No doubt many of you will already be aware of this decision, with customers receiving their letters last weekend. This was the first I new about it, and was called by the Halifax on Monday to confirm this. It was a shock to all concerned.
I’ve already discussed the situation with Nick this week and we have asked for an urgent meeting with representatives of the business. In addition we have also made new enquiries today about new opportunities for a bank to re-locate to Kimberley, following up from our original conversations earlier this year, that many of you will recall.
As soon as any more information is available we will let you know.
Finally I’ve been asked to advertise two events shown below.

Best regards,
Richard

Hi Richard,
Please would you see attached info regarding a fund raising event a colleague and I have organised in aid of Marie Curie cancer care.

I have dropped this email to you to request that you circulate to your contacts and indeed your colleagues of the workplace to make them aware of this opportunity to sponsor or donate to a worthy cause. We have 28 golfers taking part on the day and already have sponsorship of well over £500, however with your help and of others would like to achieve our target of £1000. The Marie Curie office in Kimberley have kindly agreed to get the local wrag on the case to make the locals aware of the event, any companies that would like to sponsor a hole for £10 will be mentioned in the editorial.

Cossall and Kimberley News Update and Information Service October 2009

0

Hi all,
As ever a mega busy time, now and particularly over the past 4-5 weeks. Summer holidays seem an eternity away now.
Thanks to all of you for your continuing feedback and comments, and welcome to all those who have joined this e mail group since the beginning of September. There’s over 600 of you now to keep regularly in touch with. So along with everything else, I’ve got little time for mischief.
I am really very excited about a major project and initiative that Nick & I have been working hard on during the past 6 months. It’s the Farmers Market in Kimberley. Yes it is about to start, and yes you heard about it here first.
So on Saturday 7th November between 9am and 2pm we will have our first Farmers Market in Kimberley!
Please read below for full details. Needless to say Nick & I are delighted that the hard work has paid off. It’s not been an easy task and has taken some pulling together, but we are finally now there and ready to start.
I would personally like to thank all local residents who originally contacted Nick and myself at the beginning of this year. I have to be honest and say this certainly was not my idea and that I would never have thought about the idea of a Farmers Market.
What is abundantly clear though is that positive politics can make a difference; local residents contact their elected representatives – local councillor and MP. They in turn work together in order to champion the cause of their local residents. Both Nick and myself have precious little time to get involved in the negative campaigning tactics deployed by the opposition parties.
We are both just so pleased to have played a part in what will hopefully serve to help regenerate the community we serve.
I hope you enjoy reading all of the newsletter below and that you find it stimulating.
If Nick or I can help in way, you need help with personal casework, or you have feedback or comments, please do get in touch.

Best regards,
Richard

Cossall and Kimberley News Update and Information Service October 2009

1) Farmers Market Kimberley
For 2009 these are to take place on Saturday 7th November, Saturday 12th December and Tuesday 22th December. They will run from 9am until 2pm. The venue will the Toll Bar Square, spreading into Newdigate Street car park, Kimberley.

We will have stalls selling the following goods; specialist plants and trees, crafts, fruit vegetables and salad, meats, together with home made cakes and pastries and free range eggs (all from local producers). The 22nd December market should be particularly tempting as you will be able to get all of your fresh fruit and veg for Christmas. Dates for the 2010 markets will be publicised in December.

Do come and support this major initiative aimed at regenerating Kimberley!

Also If you are interested in having a stall, please get in touch.

More information available from Nick or myself.

2) Newdigate Street Kimberley
Some of you will remember the extensive work and consultations that took place between July last year and June 2009 looking at how traffic congestion on Newdigate Street could be sharply improved.

After working with local residents, together with Nick (Palmer) we put a very detailed submission to the County Council asking for a number of significant improvements including double yellow lines opposite Kimberley School, a Residents Parking Scheme, and a series of bollards to prevent cars from mounting the pavements.

Since June this year when the administration of the County Council changed to Conservative control, I have been asking for a site meeting with the senior Member responsible for Highways, in order to try and progress this matter.

I did finally meet with County Cllr Richard Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Highways on Friday 18th September, on site, to look at a comprehensive package of measures, incorporating those above, and we discussed how and when these could be implemented. I’ve also asked for additional funding for Kimberley School, in order that they can convert more land inside school grounds for parking.

Basically now, we are in the hands of the County Council. They have all of the information. As soon as I hear more I will let you know.

More information available from myself, or County Councillor Richard Jackson cllr.richard.jackson@nottscc.gov.uk.

3) UK Coal Open Cast Mining – Cossall & Trowell
Last month two public meetings were held in Cossall and Trowell respectively. This week an action group has been set up CATAC – Cossall, Awsworth and Trowell Against Coal.

It is a small but absolutely critical group who will play a leading role helping co-ordinate the campaign against the threat of UK Coal ripping up acres of our local countryside in Cossall and Trowell. CATAC are particularly looking for volunteers who have expertise in either legal, wildlife, environmental or scientific affairs, that can help substantiate a robust case against UK Coal’s attempt to opencast. I n addition if you have time to deliver leaflets, CATAC would also like to hear from you.

For more information, or to volunteer please contact Jane Burd nottsagainstnewcoal@googlemail.com or iain@kaylee.uk.com.

4) Tram phase III route to Kimberley
You may recall that in July KENTAG (Kimberley, Eastwood and Nuthall Tram Action Group) was formed. The purpose of this group is to lobby and campaign for an extension of the existing tram route from Phoenix Park, out to Kimberley and Eastwood.

The next meeting of Kentag is set to take place on Thursday 19th November, 7 30pm at the Nelson & Railway. More information on the meeting and the work that is being done in the meantime is available from KENTAG Chair Andy Cooper usercp6695@aol.com or Steve Barber barbers@parliament.uk.

5) Car parking charges in Kimberley – what is going to happen?
I’ve reported before in copious detail – see for example http://www.richardsrobinson.org.uk/ck_updates/august09.shtml about the utter shambles concerning the proposed car parking charge in Kimberley that was decided and voted upon on 28th July. I’ve heard nothing since then about the proposals to introduce the charges on Victoria Street Car Park and possibly James Street from January next year.

Along with Members of Kimberley Town Council and fellow Borough Councillor Mel Crow, I continue to oppose the proposals to charge in Kimberley. As soon as any definite details are known I will let you know.

The only detail I have received generally on parking in Kimberley has been received today, and reads as follows:

Dear Cllrs,
As you know, we have not enforced the limited waiting bays on James Street Kimberley since the start of Civil Parking Enforcement in May last year. This has been because the signs and lines did not meet the minimum legal standards. However, these have now been upgraded and we will begin enforcement this coming Monday.

In preparation for this the Warden has been visiting the street this week and warning those parked in contravention. The aim of the bays is to ensure availability of spaces for those visiting the shops during the working week. Enforcement will free up these spaces and help town centre vitality. However, it will mean that all day parkers will be hit unless they park elsewhere. This is one of many town centre locations in the Borough where it is not possible to please everybody all the time.

Thanks John.

6) Dropped kerb Cornfield Road
Here’s an example here of just how long it can take something done (even though it looks pretty easy to do in the larger scale of things)! Over a year ago I was asked to see whether it would be possible to get a dropped kerb for a disabled resident, living nearby, to aid mobility etc.

Well it’s taken a year but Broxtowe have finally accomplished this last month.

Lesson? Perseverance is the key – though it can be frustrating how long it takes to get “small” things done!

7) Community Speed Watch (CSW) in Awsworth & Cossall
This was successfully launched last month. A number of areas have been identified as “hotspots” and are being monitored in Awsworth & Cossall, including The Lane, Main Street (Awsworth) and Awsworth Lane, Cossall. For more information about contact Ed Stewart the CSW co-ordinator ed.stewart@eonenergy.com.

8) Bridleways in Cossall
A good number of horse riders, and walkers met with Nick Palmer, Broxtowe & County Council officials and myself on Friday 31st July to see if the bridleways especially around Cossall could be opened up (ie the styles removed) in order that horses could walk the length of the bridleways, and therefore taking them off the busy and very narrow roads.

We had some discussions and a number of possibilities opened up that Broxtowe and the County Council are going to explore together.

I’ve been promised an update during the first week of November. More information in the meantime available from Steve Fisher – steve.fisher@broxtowe.gov.uk or Stephen Tipping stephen.tipping@nottscc.gov.uk.

9) Over a thousand years of history in Awsworth
An excellent account of history in Awsworth has been produced by Cllr Bryan Maloney. It’s in a book called (strangely enough) A History of Awsworth. It’s priced £8 and copies can be obtained by e-mailing Bryan on: bryan.maloney@ntlworld.com.

10) Bus Services up Swingate
Following the consultation that Nick and I did during August, over one hundred responses were received from residents in the Swingate area, 99% of which were strongly in favour of the T1 running up Swingate.

I am due to have a meeting with Veolia representatives in the next two weeks in order to try and work out a revised route and accommodate as many of the requests as possible. I am hoping we can start this from 1st December.

I’m in the hands of Veolia, and as soon as more information is known I will let you know.

More information from Nick or myself.

11) Eastwood Road/Maws Lane Junction – what is happening with the bus stop?
I have made a formal complaint to the County Council, and escalating this up through the various channels because of their single lack of action to improve the traffic queues from the bus stop (that they previously undertook to move), causing congestion at the crossroads with Maws Lane and Awsworth Lane.

As soon as there is more information I’ll let you know.

12) Hardy Street/Cliff Boulevard/Norman Street area – traffic congestion and road safety
In August I wrote to all residents in this area asking for views and suggestions for improvements to try and reduce the traffic congestion in this area. Again there’s been a large response, with some really positive ideas put forward. I’m currently getting all of the responses typed up and analysed, and in turn these will be passed to the County Council to work out a proper response and plan of action.

As soon as there’s more information I will let you know.

13) A610 Noise Improvements
This a long running campaign going back 6 or 7 years to persuade the County Council to install low level resurfacing (reduces vehicle noise by up to 5db) on the A610 between the Kimberley Bridge and Ikea junction. I’ve asked the County Council last month for an update on where we currently are on this matter.

As soon as there’s more information I will let you know.

14) Bus shelter at the bottom of the steps near Hardy Street, Main Street, Kimberley
I’ve been asked about what has happened to the above bus shelter. The answer I am told from the County Council is that due to being demolished by a recent accident, it will take 8-10 weeks to get a replacement. More information available from Karen Emery, Technical Officer Nottinghamshire Transport Services, Nottinghamshire County Council karen.emery@nottscc.gov.uk.

15) Almond Close, Alma Hill and Cornfield Road, Kimberley
In September I met with a representative of Derwent Living to discuss a significant investment and scheme that they are planning to implement in this area from January next year. Included in the works are extensive improvements to windows, security, parking and a possible allotment area.

More information is available from Mark Wood, Housing Officer, Derwent Living – markw@derwentliving.com.

16) One way system – High Street, Kimberley
I’ve reported in previous months about the continual flouting of the one way system here by drivers, to the annoyance of residents especially around Ruby Paddocks, High Street etc.

It’s dangerous and the situation is apparently not getting any better.

I’ve been give quite a radical suggestion that from where St Pauls Court is, to have the road by closed off by a series of bollards. What this would mean is that from St Paul’s Court to the end of High Street (where it meets up with Greens Lane) you would have to travel outwards by car in order to exit this area.

Obviously there will be pros and cons, but before I take this forward formally I would appreciate feedback on what people think to this.

17) Pavements in Kimberley
I went out with a Highways Inspector to look at various areas in Kimberley where people had asked for pavements to be improved. These included Town View, Brendon Drive, Swingate and Clive Crescent, Valley Road, and Awsworth Lane. Minor improvements are being made in these areas.

I’d like more long lasting resurfacing to be applied in many areas, but we have to work with what we’ve got.

If you would like any particular areas inspecting, please let me know. We will do our best, within finite resources to make improvements wherever possible.

18) Greene King
Many of you will know that Nick & I have been pressing Greene King on two major issues over the past couple of years; first they should consider selling the site off in separate parts (as opposed to one lot) and secondly that whatever happens in terms of the sale the interests of the residents in the brewery houses are fully protected.

I’ve been passed the following information from Roger Freeston who is the Director at Savills (the selling agents for Greene King).

Savills are shortly to be advertising some parts of the Kimberley Brewery for sale individually by private treaty. The particular properties comprise those on the east side of Station Road/Hardy Street, namely former garage buildings, together with offices and stores at the junction of Brewery Street and Hardy Street.

The railway cutting or the main Brewery site is not being offered for sale, neither are any of the houses. These will continue to be owned by Greene King, along with the bridge over Hardy Street and the offices either side.

Savills will however consider offers for other parts of the brewery.

A little more detail about what is being offered for sale is shown as follows:

  1. Former Commercial Vehicle Garage, Brewery Street – 0.131 hectares, 0.325 acres – potential for other uses/redevelopment
  2. Former Commercial Vehicle Garage, Station Road – 0.079 hectares, 0.195 acres
  3. Former Garage and Boiler House, junction of Station Road and Brewery Street – 0.018 hectares, 0.044 acres – freehold commercial premises with forecourt and rear parking.
  4. Former Wine and Spirit Dept Offices, Cellars, Workshop, Stores and potential land for development, Brewery Street & Hardy Street, Kimberley – 0.277 hectares, 0.685 acres – commercial suitable for alternation, renovation and conversion with a possible range of alternative uses.

I’ve been told that anyone interested in making an offer on anything mentioned above should contact Andrew Galloway: agalloway@savills.com – 0115 934 8112.

I have got paper copies of the sales if anyone would like them.

19) Broxtowe Action Fund
Broxtowe Borough Action Fund gives grants of up to £2000 to voluntary and community groups providing services in the Borough. Since the fund started in 2000 it has given nearly £165,000 to 188 groups. In the last 9 years a very diverse range of projects have been supported including a ladybird farm on a community allotment, yoga classes for disabled people and a skateboarding park in Stapleford. Many of the projects support the most vulnerable people in communities and have a lasting affect on people’s quality of life.

This year’s fund is being supported by Broxtowe Borough Council, Nottinghamshire County NHS, Nottinghamshire County Council and the Co-operative Group. The next deadline for receiving applications is 26 February 2010. Contact Richard Lea on 0115 917 3395 or richard.lea@broxtowe.gov.uk.

0

Hi all
Two very brief items to bring to your attention.

First, I’m attend a public meeting Nick has organised at the Trowell Festival Inn, (Harry’s Bar) from 7pm until 9pm this coming Wednesday 23 September for anyone concerned about the prospect of open-casting at Shortwood Farm between Cossall, Trowell and the M1. The meeting is being supported by members of all political parties and all members of the public are welcome. More information available directly from Nick (see details below).

Second if anyone would specifically like information on the M1 widening between Junctions 25 & 28, please let me know as I’ve received some up to date information recently.

I’ll be back with a full update for October next week with hopefully some good news on the Farmers’ Market plans for Kimberley.

Cossall and Kimberley News Update and Information Service September 2009

0

Hi all,
The update this month will be reasonably brief (returned from holiday on Monday to a mountain of work)!
I’ll concentrate really on one major item – Greene King and news on the Kimberley Brewery site (see below).
Other issues very briefly – there’s been an excellent response from residents in Kimberley on a couple of different issues:

  1. T1 Phoenix Flyer and looking to re-route this via Swingate.
  2. Traffic problems in the Hardy Street, Cliff Boulevard area. I’ve still got 70 unopened letters to wade through, but from the letters and e mails I’ve seen so far, there’s been some excellent suggestions on both issues.

Nick & I are also making steady progress with the Market proposals for Kimberley. We’ve talked to a number of traders who have expressed an interest, and are just awaiting some final feedback from them and on the legal side, before we go public on what the final proposals are. As mentioned before we would like ideally to get this started from November, but are just waiting a few answers at present.
Also there’s some excellent work been done over the past 6 months that will hopefully come to fruition in Awsworth & Cossall later this month, with the start of Community Speed there. Thanks in particular to Ed Stewart, Cllr Steve Brunt and PCSO Peter Keeley for all of their expertise and guidance.

As ever if there is anything Nick or myself can assist with, do get in touch, and feedback on any issue is always welcome.

Best regards,
Richard

Hi all,
Many apologies for a further e mail, but I have been asked specifically to bring two additional items to your attention.
One is directly from Broxtowe BC about a new on line Building Control application form (this will be of interest to any of you having/thinking of have any extension, or alterations to your property). See the item One of the First in the Country immediately below.
The second is a request from a Kimberley resident Sarah Pykett to let you know (this will especially interest animal lovers) about a Summer Fare at the Midland German Shepherd Rescue Centre, taking place this coming Saturday. You’ll find more details about this item below too.

Best regards,
Richard

Cossall and Kimberley (mini extra) News Update and Information Service August 2009

One of the First in the Country
Broxtowe Borough Council has become one of the first authorities in the country to create and implement an online Building Control application form. The simplified electronic form replaces the somewhat complicated paper based version. Customers can use the form to either calculate an estimated quote based on the information supplied or submit a full application.

The form includes the following features:

  • Easy to use drop down menus that dynamically alters later questions depending on what the customer has chosen.
  • Links to the Capita online payment system giving the customer the ability to make a Building Control application payment online.
  • The facility to upload plans and other related documents.

On form completion, the form and supporting documentation is sent directly to the building control section and printable copy being sent to the customer. The new service will be publicised shortly but already a number of people have started using the service. Contact Steve Dolan on 0115 917 3685 – stephen.dolan@broxtowe.gov.uk.

Summer Fare at the Midland German Shepherd Rescue Centre
There is a Summer Fare at the Midland German Shepherd Rescue Centre, North Lodge Kennels, Kings Corner, Derby DE21 4RG.

It is on, on Saturday 15th August from 10.30am until 4.00pm.

Cossall and Kimberley News Update and Information Service August 2009

Hi all,
A warm (yes it’s stopped raining as I write) welcome to August’s update.
Whoever said the life of a councillor is an easy lot? I think July must have been one of the busiest months ever – with the tram interest growing, plus developments on car parking charges, fruit and veg market, power cuts, complaints to the County Council and and much more. I’ve tried to remember everything that I’ve been involved in and detailed this for you below, together with other community information that I trust is both useful and stimulating.
As ever feedback is always welcome and if there is any personal casework that Nick or I can help with do get in touch.
Some responses might be a little slower because I am (hurrah) taking a break for the last two weeks of August, where hopefully the sun will not stop shining.

Best regards,
Richard

Cossall and Kimberley News Update and Information Service August 2009

1) Power cuts in Kimberley
I’ve been made aware over the past couple of weeks from residents in the High Street/Ruby Paddocks area of Kimberley about a series of power cuts that appear to be growing in frequency. In particular occurrences have taken place on 15th May, 6th June, 7th June and 29th July.

I’ve spent some time contacting senior people at Central Networks (EON) over the past week, trying to get something resolved here for residents that are being adversely affected for some considerable time.

I’ve been advised that any resident suffering any further loss of power should telephone 0800 056 8090.

I’ve managed to escalate the particular issue affecting High Street residents – so if there are cuts of power during August, I’ve asked the Patch Manager at EON to intervene and take prompt action. I’ve also got direct contact details if anyone would like these.

I’m certainly no electrician and understand very little of the tehnical problems EON described to me. What I believe to have been causing the problems recently (in my sort of layman’s speak) concern ‘fuses’ and ‘phases’ in underground cables in the area. EON are reluctant I think to replace the whole cable in and around High Street (cost and amount of disruption), but if further fuses continue to blow, they might have to take longer term action (which I have argued strongly for).

I’d be pleased to kept informed of any problems people do encounter so I can try and keep on top of this situation.

2) Police Beat Walks – August – October
This is an excellent initiative instigated by the police. Members of the public are duly invited to walk with the police and local councillors in streets around their area and suggest areas for improvement.

I’ve been given the following dates for Kimberley by the police during the next few weeks as follows:

Friday 7th August
Newdigate Street, 7pm – 8pm
Wednesday 2nd September
Seamer Road, Bayswater Road, 7pm – 8pm
Thursday 1st October
Noel Street, 7pm – 8pm

Dates for Awsworth and Cossall are to be confirmed.

For more information contact John Lees – Local Area Commander for the area – based at Eastwood Police Station: john.lees@nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk

3) Tram phase III route to Kimberley
On 6th July around 20 people on a wet evening, accompanied by Steve Beech, reporter from Radio Nottingham walked the possible route that the tram would take out to Kimberley, extended from Phoenix Park. We ended the walk at at the Nelson and Railway, were joined by others and the first meeting of KENTAG (Kimberley, Eastwood and Nuthall Tram Action Group) was held.

Not everyone who came to the meeting necessarily is a proponent of the tram. What we are trying to do is work up the momentum that is starting to build to look at just what is and is not possible to develop over the coming weeks and months.

More specifically we are looking at a feasbility study being completed and also generating further publicity about the possibilites for a tram route out through Kimberley (and into Eastwood).

KENTAG will be leafletting people at Phoenix Park during the Autumn.

For more details about KENTAG, if you would like to join, have further questions, please contact the Chair – Andy Cooper, who lives in Kimberley and his e-mail is usercp6695@aol.com.

4) Car parking charges in Kimberley – what is going to happen?
Last Tuesday 28th July the Cabinet meeting at Broxtowe discussed and debated the long publicised issue of car parking charges.

I had previously been a member of the Cabinet until several years ago. After what happened last Tuesday I am just so glad I am not party to what happened.

I sat with members of the public, Cllr Mel Crow and Kimberley Town Councillors as we listened to speech after speech either miss the point, duck the real issues, ignore the evidence (and for example all of the representations I had made – not one single councillor on the Cabinet made reference to the individual e-mails of objectionsent).

The debate on car parking charges was at best inept, at its worst it totally disregarded the arguments and case that charging for car parking in Kimberley is not economic per se.

What we have for Kimberley now is a hotch potch of an “initial decision” – I’ll come back to this.

Essentially what came out of the meeting was this – subject to a 20 week further “consultation period” car parking charges in Kimberley will be introduced from January 2010 in Victoria Street car park, and possibly James Street (the Cabinet could not make up its mind what to do here). Newdigate Street and Station Road car parks will be excluded from charges.

That I understand the position – the charges will apply Monday – Saturday 8am – 6pm with the first hour free. £1 for first 2 hours, £1.50 for 3 hours and £3 per day. Season ticket options maybe available.

Please note that the new re-elected Lib Dem County Cllr for Kimberley Ken Rigby voted to introduce car parking charges for Kimberley. Perhaps next time the Focus leaflet comes out, you might ask him to justify his decision.

From what I could make out the Tories both “abstained” and/or voted against. I didn’t really understand why after they’ve made so much fuss, they just could not vote against.

What I should say is that Mel (Cllr Crow), Kimberley Town Council and myself have always maintained a principled opposition to these ill thought out proposals. There had previously been no vote on whether to introduce car parking charges across the borough until 28th July (despite a bit of mischief from the Tories during the election period)!

I mentioned above that this is an “initial” decision, as I am told there will be further “statutory consultation” with interested groups (but not necessarily individual residents).

If you want more information I’m happy to try and assist – though the plans appear somewhat scant at present.

I’m sure Mel would offer some thought and reflections too mel.crow@broxtowe.gov.uk.

5) Community Speed Watch (CSW) in Awsworth and Cossall
Despite a delay in starting this project (due originally to commence on 1st April) the momentum has built again and final plans are now taking shape. Hopefully we’ll be starting in September.

A number of areas have been identified as “hotspots” to monitor in Awsworth and Cossall, including The Lane, Main Street and Awsworth Lane.

Training of volunteers has taken place during July and we now have a Co-ordinator and Deputy Co-ordinator both for Awsworth and Cossall, Ed Stewart and Simon Robinson, respectively.

For more information about the start date contact Ed Stewart ed.stewart@eonenergy.com.

6) Fruit and Veg Market in Kimberley
Both Nick and I are making some progress with this issue. We met last Friday 31st July with a local trader who has given us very good information on how to take this initiative forward.

We’ve initially identified three possible locations in Kimberley where the market could go. Also we’ve been in touch this week with a local “Toby” (that’s the phrase I think that describes someone who organises the stall holders) and are hoping to have a further session next week.

Nick and I would ideally like to see a market up and running from 1st November this year. We realise this might be a little optimistic bearing in mind the various constraints and work involved at the moment in setting this up. We are however committed to trying to bring this about, as so many people in Kimberley especially have mentioned to us that they would want this. It will also help we hope, to stimulate other trade in the town.

As soon as anything more definite is known we will let you know.

7) Bridleways in Cossall
A good number of horseriders, and walkers met with Nick Palmer, Broxtowe and County Council officials and myself last Friday 31st July to see if the bridleways especially around Cossall could be opened up (ie the styles removed) in order that horses could walk the length of the bridleways, and therefore taking them off the busy and very narrow roads.

We had some useful discussions and a number of possibilities opened up that Broxtowe and the County Council are going to explore together.

I’m currently awaiting more information and will make this available in due course.

More information available from Steve Fisher – steve.fisher@broxtowe.gov.uk.

8) The Hope Charity Project – shops in Kimberley and Eastwood
If you are able to spend any time volunteering in one of the shops, or have unwanted (but good quality) clothes, furniture, bric a brac etc, the Hope Charity Project would love to hear from you.

All the profits from sales go to help for example women suffering from domestic violence.

For more information please contact Sarah Robinson – sarah@outreachchurch.co.uk or 0115 916 7881.

9) Newdigate Street
I have spent the last year working on a major project with The Kimberley School and Newdigate Street residents in order to achieve some significant improvements in respect of pedestrian safety and better traffic flow. Some of the key things we’ve been working on together is to try and persuade the County Council to place double yellow lines on the corner of Newdigate Street (opposite the school), and then to give the school additional funding to create spaces for parking inside the school grounds.

Provisional information sent out this week intimates that the County Council are going to agree to our request for double yellow lines (as soon as this is confirmed) I will let you know.

I have chased the County Council about this again two weeks ago (but they have not yet come back with any definitive information).

10) Over a thousand years of history in Awsworth
An excellent account of history in Awsworth has been produced by Cllr Bryan Maloney. It’s in a book called (strangely enough) A History of Awsworth. It’s priced £8 and copies can be obtained by e-mailing Bryan on: bryan.maloney@ntlworld.com.

11) Bus Services up Swingate
A number of people have been in touch about the possibility of the T1 going up Swingate at periodic times during the day. Nick and I are writing out to all residents in the Swingate area next week, and once we have the responses we will be meeting with Veolia again.

More information – nickmp1@aol.com or myself.

12) Eastwood Road/Maws Lane Junction – what is happening with the bus stop?
I have made a formal complaint to the County Council because of the lack of response. I have asked the question so many times, and not had a proper response, I’ve tried to escalate this further.

Many of you have asked about what’s happening, and making a formal complaint seems to be the only way to try and get things moving here.

As soon as there is more information I’ll let you know.

13) Brief snippets
Hardy Street/Cliff Boulevard/Norman Street area
I am writing to all residents next week – seeking views on safety and congestion improvements. Hopefully in conjunction with Hollywell School Travel Plan we can work up some proper long term solutions.

Little Lane/Spring Hill/Kimberley Close
Some complaints have been received about the lack of space for Emergency Vehicles to get through to Kimberley Close, because of obstructions on Little Lane. I’ve reported this to the County Council and they say they will do some investigative work.

Greene King
I have asked (again) for an update on what is happening a) on the site (the for sale boards have come down) b) what is happening to the tenants’ contracts.

High Street
A few complaints have come through about the lack of respect that drivers pay for the one way system. I have asked the Town Council for their observations, before approaching the County Council formally.

Brendon Drive/Town View
I insepected the pavements here last month, and we should be getting some repairs and resurfacing done in part (I’d like the whole area done), but it looks as though some temporary resurfacing will be the best we will get for now.

Cossall & Kimberley News Update & Information Service July 2009 – Car Parking Charges Special

0

Hi all,
Some urgent information to bring to your attention following last night’s first meeting of the residents group Kimberley Against Car Parking Charges (KAPC).

I met with the Director of Finance on Monday this week to get the latest position on what is happening on the proposed car parking charges for Kimberley.

This is a very short summary of some of current proposals that I relayed back to KAPC last night:

  1. One of the recommendations now being looked at is to charge only for Victoria Street car park. Station Road and Newdigate Street are deemed not viable economically. There are still question marks over James Street with various options still being considered.
  2. Proposals would be that there would be no charges for the first hour, £1 for first 2 hours, £1.50 for 3 hours and £3 all day with various season ticket options.
  3. The charges if agreed would be put in place from Monday to Saturday 8am until 6pm, with no exemptions for example for charities.
  4. Should the Cabinet meeting of Broxtowe Borough Council approve car parking charges for Kimberley – a Car Parking Order is introduced and a 20 week consultation period would then ensure, where individuals would have the opportunity to make representations against whatever is proposed (should be noted though that individual residents during this time are not consulted automatically – it’s up to each individual to send their complaint/objection in).
  5. The earliest then that after this 20 week period that Car Parking Charges would be introduced in Kimberley is January 2010.
  6. There was a unanimous view last night from KAPC that the idea of charging for ANY car park in Kimberley should be opposed – not only on economic grounds, but just because of the sheer additional congestion that would inevitably be caused in and around Newdigate Street and Victoria Street, the detrimental affect of businesses etc. KAPC also are unanimous in their view that the whole idea and consultation process so far regarding parking charges in Kimberley is very weak.
  7. The situation with Sainsbury’s is that they have approached the County Council to be able to charge after a first 2 hour free period. As of Monday this week the County Council do not appear to have given permission yet.

What to do now?

So we now need your help – this is where you come in!

  1. We need a many e mails/letters of protest as possible to go into the Cllrs who are on the Cabinet that will make the decision in respect of parking charges for Kimberley on Tuesday 28 July. Full details are shown below. Send your protests directly to the Cllrs listed below (and not me). Please aim to get your e mails/letters in by Thursday 23th July.
  2. If you want to turn up and protest on the night of the Council Cabinet meeting – you are welcome to do so and also attend the meeting (you would not be allowed to participate though). More information about the protests are available from Cllr Mel Crow who is co-ordinating things on behalf of the Town Council – mel.crow@broxtowe.gov.uk.

By sending a strong and united voice now – we can influence a key part of how our community develops over the coming months, and hopefully stop this unwanted and unnecessary extra charge hitting Kimberley residents and businesses.

Thank you for your support. Any questions please get in touch.

Best regards,
Richard

Richard Robinson
Labour Borough Cllr for Kimberley & Cossall
7 Scargill Avenue,
Newthorpe,
Nottingham,
NG16 2DZ

Tel: 01773 531315 (h) – 0775 1970 640 (m)
E-mail: richard.robinson@broxtowe.gov.uk

Cabinet meeting when decision on car parking charges will be made is Tuesday 28th July, commencing at 6pm. This is open to members of the public. Address of the council is shown below.

E-mails or letters of objections to the proposed car parking charges for Kimberley should be sent before 28th July to the following Councillors (and members of the Cabinet).

Cllr M G Rich – michael.rich@broxtowe.gov.uk

Cllr M Brown – mick.brown@broxtowe.gov.uk

Cllr S Heptinstall MBE – stan.heptinstall@broxtowe.gov.uk

Cllr R I Jackson – richard.jackson@broxtowe.gov.uk

Cllr J M Owen – jillowen@broxtowe.gov.uk

Cllr F Prince – frank.prince@broxtowe.gov.uk

Cllr M Radulovic MBE – milan.radulovic@broxtowe.gov.uk

Cllr K Rigby – ken.rigby@broxtowe.gov.uk

Suggested notes, key tips for e mails/letters:

  • Ensure they are polite.
  • Urge the Cllrs to vote against a “blanket” car parking charge across the borough.
  • Do not make them overly long winded (make your points as concise as possible).
  • Emphasise the key point that the economic case for car parking charges in Kimberley is flawed.
  • Clearly point out that what may work for Beeston or other areas cannot be simply duplicated somewhere else – outline unique nature of Kimberley case – and even if Kimberley is exempt from parking charges, this does not set a precedent for all of the other areas in the borough.
  • Bring out the points about the poor consultation so far and the “loaded” questions originally asked.
  • Highlight the particular problems you have if you are a resident of Newdigate Street, Victoria Street, Regent Street or James Street, or own a business on any of these streets.
  • Bring out any points of raised at tonight’s meeting of KAPC.

You can also e-mail the Director of Finance Malcolm Staley on malcolm.staley@broxtowe.gov.uk and the Chief Executive Ruth Hyde, ruth.hyde@broxtowe.gov.uk – outlining your objections and points (they have no voting power – but do advise the Cllrs).

If you do not have access to e mail, all letters can be addressed to the individual Cllrs, Chief Executive and Director of Finance and posted to Broxtowe Borough Council, Town Hall, Foster Avenue, Beeston, NG9 1AB.

Alternatively to save postage – if you drop your letters through the doors of Nottingham West Outreach Church, Richard Robinson will hand them in at the Council Offices before 28th July.

For details of protests being organised by Kimberley Town Council, contact Cllr Mel Crow, 0115 945 8577, e-mail mel.crow@broxtowe.org.uk – postal address 27 Cliff Boulevard, Kimberley, Nottingham, NG16 2JJ.
