Broxtowe News Update & Information Service July/August 2019

Hi all

Welcome to the July/August edition of my local newsletter.  A special welcome to all those who have joined during the past few weeks, and thank you to everyone who has been in touch recently.

I was unable to publish an edition last month – I simply ran out of time!  This month’s edition covers both July & August, and therefore is slightly longer than usual.

My work is extremely busy at the moment – plenty of good and positive initiatives, combined with a number of significant challenges.

In terms of individual personal casework – here are examples of some of the work I have been undertaking on behalf of residents in and around Kimberley recently:

dangerous pavement surfaces, data protection issues, planning applications, additional tree planting, neighbour disputes, widows pensions, cemetery rights, new business grants, non taxed vehicles, traffic flow on Maws Lane and Hardy Street, housing allocations, Fairgrove issues, residents parking, environmental health, road surfaces in Babbington Village.

So essentially there’s always plenty to keep me out of mischief!

In a wider perspective I remain optimistic and very much focused on delivering for Kimberley and the surrounding areas.

I hope that you find the content both useful and stimulating.

Feedback as always is welcome and if anyone has feedback, questions or needs help with personal casework do give me a shout.

Best regards

Broxtowe News Update & Information Service July/August 2019
1)  A brief tribute to Betty Syson
Many of you will have known Betty Syson a much loved stalwart of Kimberley who passed away last month on 13 July.  A very fitting service was held celebrating Betty’s life on 26 July at Holy Trinity Church in Kimberley.  It was great to see the church so full and some very moving tributes made by her son’s Wayne and Paul, together with some lovely words from the Rev Barbara Holbrook.
I knew Betty well (together with husband Terry) and especially since I first became a councillor in Kimberley in 1997.  She was like Terry a formidable character, and she will be sadly missed.  I know that Terry will cherish many happy memories from a lifetime spent together.
2)  An open invitation to Rumbletums Annual General meeting (AGM)
Rumbletums in Kimberley are holding their AGM on Monday 19 August at 6 30pm, and it’s open for all to attend (2a Victoria Street, Kimberley).
I was delighted to learn that they have been awarded a grant of £150,000 from Power to Change (and this is in addition to over £50,000 being raised locally and online).  They are now now able to purchase the building they use.  Their tenure at one point was doubtful, however a brilliant effort by local people has had a tremendous affect.
There is more information available by clicking here
For my part I made a written to submission to Power to Change on 3 April this year, presenting the case for investment in Rumbletums to be made.
If you require any more details about Rumbletums activity please get in touch with Mr Derek Gardiner (Trustee for Rumbletums) –
3)   Additional tree planting in Kimberley
I have received some requests for additional tree planting in various parts of Kimberley.  I am pleased to report that three new trees will be planted this coming winter near Rowan Court (which is an area behind the back of the Stag Inn).
For more information please contact Tim Crawford – Environment & Parks Manager, Broxtowe Borough Council –

4)   Business networking – boosting the high street: local shops and businesses in Kimberley

I am very excited about this opportunity.  Last month I met with Matt Batterham – Business Growth Manager at Broxtowe Borough Council and we discussed how as a council we can better serve the interests of local shops & businesses.  One of the ideas coming forward was to have a networking session when all established businesses locally (together with those wanting to start new businesses) can all meet together, share experiences, problems, opportunities and good practice.
I’m pleased to say that we are having our first session on Wednesday 28 August between 5 30pm and 7 30pm at Rumbletums – 2a Victoria Street, Kimberley.
If you own a business in and around Kimberley – or would like to, please do come along, we will be delighted to see you.
For more information you can contact me or:

5)   Langley Mill Super Hub – tram extension Line 4, phase III to Kimberley, Eastwood & into Amber Valley
There continues to be huge amount of work being put into making sure that the Langley Mill Super Hub (incorporating the tram extension from Phoenix Park through Kimberley & Eastwood) comes to fruition.
I have updated the main details below.  There will be some key developments next month in September I’ll continue to update you with progress, substantive decisions and timescales as the picture becomes clearer.
Please continue to keep in touch with questions, comments and feedback.
6)   The Ruislip Close wall Kimberley
I have reported this matter on a number of occasions during the past year or so in previous newsletters.  I’ve put a lot of work into trying to get some proper improvements on various matters for people who live in properties near by.  Last month I met again with a number of residents who live in the Bassett Close, Ruislip Close area of Kimberley who clearly want to have the wall either reduced or demolished.
I have a meeting later this month to discuss with the relevant stakeholders later this month to discuss this specific matter and also various issues around Kimberley.
I’ll update you all further in September.
7)   Beauvale Photography Group’s Annual Exhibition
This is taking place between Friday 6 September and Saturday 7 September at Eastwood Town Council – details at the image attached
The event is taking place alongside the D H Lawrence Music Festival.
Additionally Beauvale Photography Group – also have have an exhibition entitled “The Blue Line and Beyond” – an up to date view of the world of D H Lawrence.  This is being shown at the D H Lawrence Museum throughout August.
If you would like more information about Beauvale Photography Group and their contact details, please get in touch and I can pass the information on.
8)   Cinema at Giltbrook Retail Park (GRP)
At the recent borough council elections in my election manifesto: 65090 A4 4pp Councillor Leaflet – I made a clear commitment to promoting leisure opportunities in the area.
Several years ago I undertook a survey to find out local support for a cinema at GRP: – this demonstrated phenomenal public support.
Last month on 17 July I met with the owners of owners of GRP to see what the latest position regarding the cinema is.  Originally it was planned to have a cinema in place by 2022, however various business priorities on the retail park have been subject to a few changes.
I am now undertaking further background work to see what now is a practical way to move forward to this project.  It may well take a few months, but I’m on the case again with seeing how we can actually make a cinema work here with a number of partners.   I wish these things could be achieved much quicker, and there’s lots challenges, but I’m in this for the long term and I’ll come back when there is something concrete to report.
9)   Residents Parking in Kimberley
I am very interested to know your thoughts on Residents Parking schemes (RPS)  I do get asked about them every so often.
Do you think they are generally a good idea or not, do they help, would you like to see more of them and so on?
On 3 August last year I specifically approached the County Council following requests for residents parking from people living on Orchard Street in Kimberley.
The County Council’s general position on residents parking is that schemes are only implemented where they meet the necessary criteria and where there is also a consensus of support for the scheme.
Questionnaires are sent out by the County Council to all residents and businesses within the proposed area, seeking their views.  The questionnaire sets out the basics of the proposed scheme, such as its times of operation and costs asks whether the resident supports the scheme.   The required response rate to this questionnaire is 35% and of those responses, 65% must be in favour of the introduction of a RPS.
Specifically regarding Orchard Street – this has now met the relevant criteria after various consultations and formal advertising is being undertaken.

More information directly on the Orchard Street scheme can be obtained from Steph Walford, Senior Improvements Officer, Via East Midlands Ltd

– Tel: 0115 977474 and also Cllr Philip Owen:

10)   Let’s Talk Broxtowe – have your say on Broxtowe Borough Council’s Corporate Plan
You have a chance to meet all of your Kimberley Borough Councillors this coming Tuesday 20 August, 7-815pm at Rumbeltums, 2a Victoria Street, Kimberley.
An official roadshow is being organised by the borough council (chaired by me), with presentations from Mrs Ruth Hyde Chief Executive of Broxtowe.  We’ll be looking at some of the local Kimberley challenges for the future, highlighting previous successes across the borough and seeing what positive suggestions there are to improve our local area in Kimberley, and for council services across the borough.
There is a chance to win £50 worth of shopping vouchers also.
Do come along and share your views.
 News in brief
a) Footpath improvement (KP35) – Broomhill Road to Chapter Drive, Kimberley – I am liaising with Broxtowe Borough Council and Nottinghamshire County Council with a view to securing funding for improvements and resurfacing of this footpath.  This follows on from requests I received from residents earlier this year to try and address various issues here.  The information I have received so far is that subject to the appropriate funding, the work here could be completed after April next year (2020).
 b) Aged 17 or under?  There’s still opportunity to swim for free in Broxtowe – please see for more information:
 c)   Kimberley Town Council – the council has gone lots of upheaval during the past year, however there’s some really good members there now really trying to work together to make a positive difference in the town.  Cllr Trevor Rood is the current Chairman and he is very passionate about Kimberley.  I’ve met with on a couple of occasions since May and am due to meet him later this afternoon to catch up on a number of issues.
