Broxtowe News Update & Information Service (main edition) – May 2019

Hi all

Welcome to the main edition for May’s newsletter.

I’m conscious that I’ve already issues two previous editions this month (local election results at the beginning of the month and then a special focus on the European elections last week).

Now the elections are over – well for the time-being :) at least, I’ll be back to issuing one newsletter per month.  I’m aware that email overload isn’t helpful, and I don’t want to bombard you all with too much information (less is more).

In saying that there is plenty of information to relay to you this month and I will try to do this in concise a way as possible.

I’m hugely excited about the challenges ahead – my to do list grows daily, however I am confident that real and meaningful change in Kimberley (and the surrounding areas can be achieved).  Trust you enjoy reading the information provided below.

Feedback as always is welcome and if anyone needs help with personal casework, as ever, do give me a shout.

Best regards

Broxtowe News Update & Information Service (main edition) – May 2019
1) Main Street Kimberley near Nine Corners – collapsed bank
Following contact from a number of residents about the collapsed bank (as above) earlier this month, I contacted Nottinghamshire County Council and Broxtowe Borough Council about this matter.  I was referred by Broxtowe (in terms of Planning to Erewash) and the response I received is shown below:

Dear Councillor Robinson,

The bank collapsed a while ago, building control have inspected the site for a danger point together with a structural engineer, looking at the house on the upper level safety. The house and land insurance companies are also involved.

The land is stable at present and the county highways installed the barriers are precaution and the remain section of footpath is accessible. The situation is being monitored on a regular basis.

If you require any further information please contact me.

Yours sincerely

Colin Coultan

Senior Building Control Officer –

Erewash & West Nottinghamshire Building Consultancy, Erewash Borough Council, Resources Directorate

Town Hall, Long Eaton, DE10 1HU, 0115 9072224

In terms of Nottinghamshire County Council – I was advised as follows:

From: Dave Walker []
Sent: 20 May 2019 13:12
To: Robinson, Richard
Subject: RE: *urgent please* Main Street Kimberley near Nine Corners
The Heras fencing is not in the best of conditions , so the red/yellow barriers have been straightened up and left in front of  them  and will be checked now and then , there is plenty of free footway for pedestrians to use , if you do get an update on the land behind the fence and what is planned it would be helpful if you could update me.

I will continue to monitor the situation and if anyone has further concerns or questions please let me know.

2)   Broxtowe Women’s Project (BWP)

BWP do a fantastic job helping women and their families who are affected by domestic abuse in Broxtowe.  Help is given to women and families empowering them to to feel safe, to take control of their lives and to lead safer lives.
They have now raised a new fund-raising pack – Afternoon Tea for BWP – which can be found at:
In the link above you will find posters, tips and ideas for an afternoon tea event and how to make it as successful as possible.  There is a National Cream Tea Day on 28 June and this is a great way of celebrating.
BWP would not be able to continue without support from our fundraisers.
For example:
– £15 enables them to provide a woman with one hours phone support.
– £45 enables them to give two hours of outreach with a worker in a safe location
– £65 can help us get a woman into refuge. This can take several hours of liaising with agencies and lots of support, encouragement and reassurance especially if children are involved.  It could be their next step to freedom.
For more information please contact BWP:
3)   Horse Fair
During the past three weeks I have been liaising with officers at Broxtowe and also to Sue Maxwell – the local pub watch coordinator for the Kimberley, Eastwood, Nuthall area (who does a brilliant job in coordinating) in terms of what happens in future, and particularly how Sue can be supported in future with communications.  One of the issues before was that Sue was not included as a member of the Safety Action Group (SAG):
I have made representations to Broxtowe that Sue in her pubwatch role should be included as a member of the SAG, and I’m pleased to say that this has now been agreed.
In terms of future events – I spoke with the land owners last week and they confirmed that no ongoing agreement had been reached for future horse fairs and that the matters was in the hands of solicitors.
When I receive any further information I will let you know, in the meantime if there are any more questions or comments please get in touch.
4)   Rain or Shine Theatre Company – Thursday 18 July 2019 – 7pm
The above theatre company are presenting “As You Like” at Kimberley Institute Cricket Club – please click on link below for more information:

 5)  My workload and priorities in Kimberley
Apart from a brief 4 day break from the Sunday after the elections on 2 May, it’s fair to say it’s been pretty relentless since then.
I listed in a newsletter previously this year the priorities in Kimberley you had tasked me with should I be re-elected.
see in particular part 2: So what are my priorities on being successfully re-elected?
I’m meeting with my agent Luke McGibney next week to try and structure the multiplicity of demands into short term, medium and long term goals.  Also to work out the the more urgent campaigns and to define the clear objectives, strategies and tactics.  We’re going to be approaching many of the issues in new ways with high visibility campaigns using video, Have Your Say public sessions and increased social media.
Here’s a flavour of some of the work and campaigns coming up:
  • Zebra crossing/double yellow lines near Digby Street
  • Parking issues on Main Street (opposite Sainsbury’s)
  • Maws Lane, Hardy Street traffic issues
  • Swingate traffic issues
  • A610 Road Noise
  • Cinema at Giltbrook Retail Park
  • Planting of additional trees as various locations throughout Kimberley
  • Nine Corners pedestrian issues
  • Transport for disabled and elderly people in various part of Kimberley
  • Road resurfacing in various parts of Kimberley
  • Upgrading the footpath between Chapter Drive and Broomhill Drive, Kimberley
I’ll update you further in June’s newsletter with progress.  If you have issues you would like to be included please let me know.
6)   Open studios- invite for Kimberley and Giltbrook 8-9 June
This year there are 3 artists in 3 locations, so great to have a stroll and see artist work in their studios.  This is part of the county wide Open Studios Nottinghamshire celebrates the county’s artists, makers and creators through May and June 2019.  Next weekend 8 & 9 June there will be activities as follows below, with the Mayor of Broxtowe Cllr Mick Brown attending next Saturday.

Each Artist with have their work on display and you be able ask them questions see work in action and sometimes have a go.
The event is supported by Kimberley WI who are doing the teas and cakes for donations towards a local good cause at Suzanne Studio Near the Ikea Roundabout in Giltbrook.
Open Studios Notts include Artists, makers and creators across Nottinghamshire will again be opening their studios to the public through May and early June 2019 to showcase the county’s strong creative community. Over 250 artists will be taking part with coverage from Misson in the north of the county to Sutton Bonnington in the south, Brinsley to the west and Thorney in the east.
Every genre of artistic endeavour will be on display including ceramics, furniture making, jewellery, textiles, photography, painting, mixed media, sculpture, glass work, wood carving, print making, creative writing and more. Many venues will have demonstrations and have-a-go activities, as well as the opportunity to meet artists and creators in person and see where and how they work.
Photographic exhibitions at Retford, Mansfield Central and Beeston library galleries, showing artists and makers at work, will run from 27 April to 6 June, thanks to  partner, Inspire: Culture, Learning and Libraries, and photographer Neil Pledger.
Look out for the Open Studios Notts brochure, available from April, in Inspire libraries and other outlets around the county such as tourist information points, museums, cafes and independent shops.  The brochure lists all the events, art trails, participating artists and venues and includes a map so you can find them.  Giltbrook and Kimberley venues are 36, 37 and 38, which include Lacemaking, Textiles and Photography.

 7)   Kimberley Town Council (KTC)
I’m not a member of the town council but I attended their full meeting last night, and offered a brief overview of some of the work I am involved in within the local community as a Broxtowe Borough Cllr.  One of the items I mentioned was the request that had been raised with me by residents asking for the May Day event to be moved to Hall om Wong Park, and also to possibly hold this over the weekend, rather than the Bank Holiday.  The events committee of Kimberley Town Council is going to discuss this.
KTC have their full meetings normally on the last Thursday of each month (held at the parish hall on Newdigate Street), open to members of the public to attend also.
Amongst the issues raised there last night by Philip Owen (Conservative County Cllr Nuthall & Kimberley) were emergency works on Victoria Street Kimberley, Swingate resurfacing, James Street residents parking consultations, scrap lorries on Gilthill and the possibility of additional yellow lines near the Stag Inn in Kimberley.
For more information on the work of Kimberley Town Council – please contact Cllr Trevor Rood (Chairman):

8)   Langley Mill Super Hub – tram extension Line 4, phase III to Kimberley, Eastwood & into Amber Valley

Since the elections on 2 May 2019 and the formation of a new administration at Broxtowe I and others are now involved in more detailed discussions with a number of partners and organisations to see how the work certainly can possibly be accelerated (irrespective of pending decisions on Hs2 and its funding).  It’s quite exciting to see the momentum gathering here.  Previous background information can be found at:
I’ll continue to update you with progress, substantive decisions and timescales as the picture becomes clearer in the up and coming weeks and months.
