Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – February 2019
A warm welcome to February’s edition, and especially to all those who have joined during the last few weeks.
There’s plenty of local news as ever, so it’s straight down to business.
If you have any feedback questions, or need help with any individual matter, please get in touch.
Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – February 2019
1) Hall Om Wong Open Space – Kimberley
I have received some complaints from local dog walkers over the past week regarding difficulties with access to the park. Broxtowe Borough Council were undertaking some hedge laying works on the frontage of the site near a stile last week . This was temporarily closed but is now back open.
For more information please contact Tim Crawford – firstname.lastname@example.org
2) Footpath between Chapter Drive and Broomhill Road, Kimberley
I am grateful to several residents who have raised this issue with me during the past few weeks. I was with one of them on Monday this week and we looked together at some of the problems nearby including broken fences, litter etc. I walk this route occasionally, and whilst it was very dry whilst we were there on Monday – another issue is I am told is it gets very boggy in damp weather. I’ve been given a number of suggestions as to what could be done to improve matters here generally which will probably involve working together with Sainsbury’s, Broxtowe Borough Council, Kimberley Town Council & Nottinghamshire County Council. One suggestion to make it easier all year for people to walk through, is to extend the tarmac for the whole length of the footpath.
I’d like to know your views on anything you would like to see here, including how well this footpath is used. Please do get in touch.
3) Local Government Ombudsman decision concerning Broxtowe Borough Council
You may recall from some months back a complaint made by Stephanie Hather against “Broxtowe Borough Council” concerning the way she was treated regarding her attempts to trade in Kimberley – with her jacket potato business.
The complaint was actually made by Stephanie to the Ombudsman on 19 December 2017. I have supported her from the outset of her complaint.
The decision made by the Ombudsman (a public document) is dated 24 August 2018 – and can be found in full by clicking on the following link:
https://www.lgo.org.uk/decisions/environment-and-regulation/licensing/17-015-321– in the report I am happy to be identified as “Cllr X”.
The Ombudsman’s decision was then considered by the Governance Standards & Audit Committee at Broxtowe Borough Council on 3 December 2018:
In summary (para 62 and 63 of the report) the Ombudsman upheld Stephanie’s complaint, finding “Broxtowe Borough Council” had caused an injustice to her. The Ombudsman specified that the council must take a number of actions including issuing a personal apology (this was delivered on Tuesday 29 January 2019), also making a payment to her of £600 (she was originally offered £200 by the council). The £600 has been paid to her.
I am delighted for Stephanie that she persevered and won her case.
From my perspective the most disappointing aspect to note, probably in the whole report is that shown in point 57 where the Ombudsman states “I find the Council’s replies have not been candid” – https://www.lgo.org.uk/decisions/environment-and-regulation/licensing/17-015-321
I’m not sure we’ll ever find out why.
4) Voting in the Broxtowe Borough Council Elections on 2 May 2019
There are local elections throughout Broxtowe in May this year. I am aware that people in Ashfield, Amber Valley, Erewash and Nottingham City receive this newsletter (where there are also elections), however this item refers solely to Broxtowe.
If you are voting in the Broxtowe Borough Council elections (and parish council) there will be a change to the rules for voting (this does not apply to postal voters) but for the majority of voters who vote at a polling station.
Broxtowe Borough Council will be participating in a national scheme aimed to improve security of the voting process. When attending the polling station you will be required to take proof of identity in order to vote.
The details should be published tomorrow – see link beow. At the moment it appears that you will need to produce either a) one form of photographic ID (ie Passport, photocard driving licence, concessionary travel pass funded by HM govt). Alternatively b) two forms of non photographic ID – (ie a vald bank or building society debit or credit card, a mortgage statement dated 2 May 2018 or afterwards, birth certificate, poll card for the election, council tax letter dated 2 May 2018 or later), a utility bill dated 2 March 2019 or later).
If you do not possess any forms of acceptable ID you can apply for a “Certificate of ID” from Broxtowe.
Postal votes are not affected by this, and proxy voters will need to take to the polling station their own individual id (not the ID of elector they are voting for).
More information will be available at: https://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/VoterID
Also you can contact in the Sue Rodden, Head of Administrative Services – 0115 9173295 – email@example.com
5) Tram Extension – Line 4 phase iii to Kimberley, Eastwood & Langley Mill Super Hub
Lots of very positive work continues behind the scenes. I’ve updated the campaign log to show the latest details here below, for any questions, please do get in touch. This year 2019, will undoubtedly prove pivotal for this project with local elections taking place (especially in Broxtowe and Amber Valley) – the results of which may well have some significant influence the speed of progress.
The local Steering Group supporting and coordinating this work (comprising of residents from Nuthall, Kimberley, Eastwood, Heanor and Codnor) works tirelessly to support this project and the latest detailed information can be found at:
6) My work on Broxtowe Borough Council

7) Public Wi-Fi in Kimberley and Eastwood
At the Jobs & Economy committee at Broxtowe Borough Council in January approval was granted to invest £30,000 in town centre Wi-Fi in Kimberley and Eastwood following a successful scheme in Stapleford which launched in May 2017.
The Wi-Fi will help support businesses in the town centres to work better and encourage shoppers to stay in the towns for longer.
