Hi all

A warm welcome to my January newsletter and especially those who have joined recently.

I hope it is not too late to wish you all a Happy New Year.

This is a long newsletter but it does contain a lot of important information.  You’ll probably be pleased to note that the word “Brexit” does not appear at all :)

I trust you find the details below provided both stimulating and useful.

As ever, if you have any feedback, comments, any issue you would like to raise or need help with personal casework, please get in touch.

Best regards

Richard

Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – January 2019

1)   Fundraising for Rumbletums

This is taking place on Saturday 16 February 2019 7pm – with live music plus refreshments full details:

2)   Capital grants available from Nottinghamshire County Council

Applications for capital grants of up to £50,000 to enhance local communities are now being accepted under the County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme (LIS).

You may have an idea about a project that could really benefit a local area, and it’s possible that financial support could be made available through the LIS.

Please note that applications should be submitted by 28 February 2019 – and more information is available at:

http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/finance-and-budget/local-improvement-scheme/capital-fund

3) Fairgrove Homes (issues about in and around Hardy Street, Kimberley)

I am meeting with Fairgrove management on site in Kimberley this coming Friday (1 February) to discuss a number of issues about the ongoing building works.  I have received a number of enquiries from local residents this month on a range of matters (in particular the state of Hardy Street).  If you have not already contacted me and wish something to be raised please let know tomorrow (Thursday) if possible.

I’ll update you further in February’s newsletter.

4) Local elections (Broxtowe) – Thursday 2 May 2019 – important information

There are local elections throughout Broxtowe in May this year.  I am aware that people in Ashfield, Amber Valley, Erewash and Nottingham City receive this newsletter (where there are also elections), however this item refers solely to Broxtowe.

If you are voting in the Broxtowe Borough Council elections (and parish council) there will be a change to the rules for voting (this does not apply to postal voters) but for the majority of voters who vote at a polling station.

Broxtowe Borough Council will be participating in a national scheme aimed to improve security of the voting process.  When attending the polling station you will be required to take proof of identity in order to vote.

The details are not yet fully finalised (but should be published on 26 February this year).  I will update further in February’s newsletter.  At the moment it appears that you will need to produce either a) one form of photographic ID (ie Passport, photocard driving licence, concessionary travel pass funded by HM govt).  Alternatively b) two forms of non photographic ID – (ie a vald bank or building society debit or credit card, a mortgage statement dated 2 May 2018 or afterwards, birth certificate, poll card for the election, council tax letter dated 2 May 2018 or later), a utility bill dated 2 March 2019 or later).

If you do not possess any forms of acceptable ID you can apply for a “Certificate of ID” from Broxtowe – I will cover this in February’s newsletter.

Postal votes are not affected by this, and proxy voters will need to take to the polling station their own individual id (not the ID of elector they are voting for).

More information will be available at: www.broxtowe.gov.uk/voterid

Also you can contact in the meantime Sue Rodden, Head of Administrative Services – 0115 9173295 – sue.rodden@broxtowe.gov.uk

5)   Fly Tipping between Chapter Drive and Broomhill Drive, Kimberley (rear of Sainsbury’s)

I have been notified of incidents of repeated fly tipping in this area, and have asked Broxtowe Council to investigate this.  Please keep me updated with progress (or otherwise) over the coming weeks.

6) Tram Extension – Line 4 phase iii to Kimberley, Eastwood & Langley Mill Super Hub

Lots of positive work continues behind the scenes.  I’ve updated the campaign log to show the latest details here below, for any questions, please do get in touch.  This 2019, will undoubtedly prove pivotal for this project with local elections taking place (especially in Broxtowe and Amber Valley) – the results of which will have some significant influence the speed of progress.

Reports are currently being compiled by two transport professionals to support the case for the tram extension and Langley Mill Super Hub.  These are due to be presented to East Midlands Councils & HS2 later this month for consideration. One of the authors of the report is from Belper, and the other has lived in Kimberley & Eastwood for a number of years but now acts as a consultant for light rail improvements across the world.

Please get in touch for any more information.

Tram extension Line 4 phase III to Kimberley, Eastwood & into Amber Valley

7)  Free self-guided tours for Broxtowe residents

Eastwood’s DH Lawrence Birthplace Museum is launching a new self-guided tour option for visitors.  The museum is offering free entry for all Broxtowe residents for six months;

For more information please see: https://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/news-events/news/press-releases-2019/january-2019/museum-introduces-free-self-guided-tours-for-broxtowe-residents/

8)  Wall demolition – Ruislip Close, & Nine Corners Zebra Crossing – Kimberley

I have mentioned both of these issues plenty of times in previous newsletters during 2018 – see http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/work-in-broxtowe/

There has been impasse with the County Council for a number of months, and on 1 November I met with Gary Wood a senior manager within Nottinghamshire County Council at County Hall.  I expressed my specific concerns about how both matters remain unresolved and my strong dissatisfaction on behalf of Kimberley residents concerning the clear discrepancies with the County Council’s approach.

On 21 December the County Council responded and advised that were consulting with the police and Broxtowe Borough Council on the grounds for establishing possible demolition (or at least reducing the height) of the wall, which I originally reported due to the amount of anti social behaviour taking place in this vicinity.

The police have advised me separately that they would not object to any specific work being taken in this area – along the lines mentioned.

I wad advised by the County Council earlier this month with regards to the wall demolition that this position is being monitored by the police, county council (and other agencies).  The County Council seem intent on “dragging their feet” on this matter which is extremely frustrating.  It is simply ridiculous that legitimate representation I made from early 2018 can get bogged down in internal county council protocol.

If there are further incidents of ongoing problems in this area please let me know.

With regards to Nine Corners – the clear impression is that the County Council really don’t want to know.  I’ve made copious representation which appears at the moment to fall on deaf ears.

At a recent Save Our Brewery Site (SOBS) meeting on Monday this week at the Parish Hall on Newdigate Street – plenty of mention was made of the new houses being built , increasing traffic and the difficulty for pedestrians crossing at Nine Corners.  I think there will be further representation to the County Council on traffic related matters in this vicinity over the next few months – so let’s watch this space.

Please come back to me with any observations and comments!

9)   Bell Restored At Stapleford Cemetery

The Bell at Stapleford Cemetery will ring twelve bells at 12 from 8 February, refurbished by the company who originally supplied it 134 years ago.

For more information please see:

https://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/news-events/news/press-releases-2019/january-2019/bell-restored-at-stapleford-cemetery/

 10)   Public Wi-Fi in Kimberley and Eastwood

At the next Jobs & Economy committee at Broxtowe tomorrow night  we will be discussing the above subject and I will be pressing very hard for significant improvements in both areas, following work undertaken elsewhere in the borough previously (ie Stapleford).

Full details of the report can be found at item 12:

https://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/media/6025/job-and-economy-committee-agenda-31-january-2019.pdf

11)  Key Individual Network (KIN)

If you are interested in representing your community across Broxtowe you are invited to become a KIN.

KIN stands for Key Individual Network.  A KIN member is someone who has good knowledge of and relationships within their community and acts as a link between the community and local police and partners.  Their community could be geographical (such as Kimberley, Beeston, Cossall, Eastwood or Stapleford) or could be people who share other characteristics (such as belonging to a cultural, ethnic, religious or disability community) and could be anyone from a councillor, teacher or shop keeper, to a church leader or the chairperson of a group.

The role of a KIN involves a person acting as a representative of the community they belong to.  As a KIN, the police may send you updates on local policing and consult you from time to time on issues relevant to the particular community group you represent or you might be contacted if there has been an incident, operation or event within your community.  You may also receive information from other partners such as the Fire & Rescue service or Local Authorities concerning community safety issues and if you have opted in to receive in information regarding events/recruitments etc.

For more information please contact Marice Hawley – Chief Communities Officer

marice.hawley@broxtowe.gov.uk

12)   Supporting local business in Kimberley

Whitebeam photography studio on James street Kimberley offer a professional studio with services for newborn, family, pets, special occasions and much more.  I visited the studios this month and they really are very good.
Whitebeam are partnering with the Katie Wright school of dance – based at Kimberley Leisure Centre – to raise funds for Rumbletums.  They are offering all day dance photo shoots with all funds being donated to Rumbletums.  There is a fundraising event on Sunday 24 February – and for more information contact Stacey Syson http://www.whitebeamphotography.co.uk/
– email: whitebeamphotography@live.co.uk

13)   Missing street sign – Brewery Street, Kimberley

This has been reported to Broxtowe Borough for action: http://love.broxtowe.gov.uk/Reports/Create

14)  Dog Fouling – Hardy Street, Kimberley

I have reported this to Broxtowe Neighbourhood wardens, following complaints from local residents, and I have asked for more bins to be installed.
If you experience with dog fouling in Broxtowe you can contact directly:

Gerry Hargreaves has a background of electrical installation and maintenance followed by considerable experience of energy monitoring providing technical support to the marketing division of East Midlands Electricity.

Projects throughout the UKhave included energy monitoring and data/billing analysis to assist companies to improve efficient use of energy. This has included disputes with electricity suppliers and distributors and site surveys, installation of temporary monitoring equipment and recommendations to install suitable power factor correction equipment. Site surveys for the installation of a M&T at major sites, have been undertaken and with the recent advances in remote monitoring technologies surveys and installation of GSM smart meters have been undertaken at distribution centres of a leading logistics company. A request by a leading UKenergy supplier has resulted in the installation of remote data collection technology, including planning and installation of remote data logging equipment to monitor and analyse usage data from geothermal sites within theUK.
