Hi all

A warm welcome to my November newsletter and especially those who have joined recently.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all well for the forthcoming Christmas season.

Thank you to everyone who has been in touch over the past few weeks.

As ever there’s lots of news to catch up on, so straight down to business.  Can I especially draw your attention to a special designed Brexit survey I have designed, and I would really appreciate it if you could spend a couple of minutes to complete (item 1).

I trust you find the information below provided both stimulating and useful.

As ever, if you have any feedback, comments, any issue you would like to raise or need help with personal casework, please get in touch.

Best regards

Richard

Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – November 2018

1)   Brexit Survey

Yes, that B word.  Many of you I appreciate maybe frustrated, confused or simply turn off when ever the subject of Brexit is mentioned.

However the vote that will be taken by MPs in the House of Commons on 11 December on the government’s final Brexit deal, will be of huge significance for the whole of the UK for generations to come.

I am very keen to know your actual views on where we are now, and I’ve devised a special poll which I would really appreciate it if you would participate in.  All of responses are of course anonymous.  Simply click on the link below (I have thrown in a few other general political questions as well if you would not mind answering them too):

http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/work-in-broxtowe/brexit-questionnaire-novembe

I do appreciate your time in this.  The results I am sure will be fascinating – and I will publicise the results during 2019.

2)   Tram Extension – Line 4 phase iii to Kimberley, Eastwood & Langley Mill Super Hub

Lots of positive work continues behind the scenes.  I’ve updated the campaign log to show the latest details here below, for any questions, please do get in touch.

Tram extension Line 4 phase III to Kimberley, Eastwood & into Amber Valley

3)   Kimberley Lights Switch on

Is taking place this coming Friday 30 November, commencing at 6pm with carol singing at Holy Trinity Church.

Other features include a tea light parade up to Toll Bar Square at 6 30pm, a town crier welcome at 6 50pm followed by speeches by the Chair of Kimberley Town Council and the Mayor of Broxtowe.  After this there will be various activities with carol singing led by some of the schools in Kimberley and a firework display at 8pm.

4)  Capital grants available from Nottinghamshire County Council

Applications for capital grants of up to £50,000 to enhance local communities are now being accepted under the County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme (LIS).

You may have an idea about a project that could really benefit a local area, and it’s possible that financial support could be made available through the LIS.

Please note that applications should be submitted by 28 February 2019 – and more information is available at:

http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/finance-and-budget/local-improvement-scheme/capital-fund

5)  Wall demolition – Ruislip Close, & Nine Corners Zebra Crossing – Kimberley

I have mentioned both of these issues plenty of times in previous newsletters during 2018 – see http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/work-in-broxtowe/

There has been impasse with the County Council for a number of months, and on 1 November I met with Gary Wood a senior manager within Nottinghamshire County Council at County Hall.  I expressed my specific concerns about how both matters remain unresolved and my strong dissatisfaction on behalf of Kimberley residents concerning the discrepancies with the County Council’s approach.

I have been promised a full and proper response, however nothing has materialised to date.

When there is more information I will let you know.

6)   Broxtowe Borough Council Email service

I have been asked by the Corporate Communications Team at Broxtowe Borough Council to promote their “E mail Me Service”.

I understand that over 17,000 residents currently subscribe to this service, which basically allows you to sign up to receive email updates on topics of your choice.

Topics are varied – ranging from business updates, latest news, events, waste and recycling for example, and it’s another way to keep up to date with what’s going on in and around Broxtowe.

The Council has also recently responded to user feedback about topics they would like to receive information about by introducing a new Public Protection topic to provide seasonal advice on community safety, food hygiene and using taxis.

You can sign up today at http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/emailme

You will only receive information about the topics you select to receive emails about and you can subscribe easily at any time by clicking the link at the bottom of every email bulletin.

7)   Giltbrook Care Home (GCH)

I have visited this establishment on a number of occasions this year and I am very impressed at the way the staff, management and a small band of volunteers serve all of the residents at the home.  It is a joy to visit and there is a fabulous sense of community eminent throughout all the work that is undertaken.   I last visited on Friday 9 November.
More general information on the type of care delivered by staff at the home can be found at the following link:

The home is also on the look out for volunteers that can go in and spend an hour chatting with some of the residents – more information available by contacting Jessica Holmes – jessica.giltbrook@gmail.com

8)  Bus Services affecting Smithurst Road Estate, Giltbrook

I have been asked to raise the issue of lack of bus services in the above area.
In previous years a Y10 bus ran roughly ever hour towards Eastwood in one direction, and to Kimberley, Nottingham and the QMC in the other.

This service has been currently cut back, and on a large and growing estate, causes considerable difficulties especially for elderly people who rely on public transport to get out and about.

Two residents in particular have got in touch with me very concerned about this, and they have put a good amount of work in to try and raise the problems thus far, with petitions etc.

Approaches to Trent Barton thus far have proved inconclusive.

I’ve been asked to see whether this matter can be drawn to the attention of a wider audience.

If you live in and around this area and are affected, please do get in touch.

9)  Rumbletums Cafe and Training Project – Victoria Street, Kimberley

Since 2011 Rumbletums was set up to offer vocational training and work experience placements to young people and young adults (16-30) with learning disabilities.

As well as this, it has become a community hub in Kimberley and also offers a parent and toddler group, a Silver Screen film night for older people, regular social events for young people with disabilities and subsidised room hire space for local voluntary organisations and community groups.

For the last 7 years, Rumbletums has rented its premises at a discounted rent, but now the landlords want to sell the building within the next year… at a cost of £200,000. Rumbletums is therefore faced with having to buy the premises, move out or wind up the project.

Therefore, Rumbletums is going to try to raise £200,000 to buy the building in order to continue – and expand – the project.

If you would like to support Rumbletums in an way please see: https://www.gofundme.com/rumbletums-cafe

10)  Voter ID pilot, Broxtowe Borough Council elections Thursday 2 May 2019 (very important information)
Broxtowe Borough Council has been confirmed as one of the voter ID pilot authorities for the elections next May.  There will be piloting the mixed model which will require voters to produce photographic ID or 2 pieces of non-photographic ID at polling stations before they can vote.  The types of ID, both photographic and non-photographic, which will be accepted have still to be agreed.

When there is more information I will let you know.

Any questions in the meantime – please contact:

Some of the most interesting items I have come across recently.  It does not mean necessarily I endorse everything that is said, but they do provoke some thought and discussion:
