Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – October 2018
1) Tram Extension – Line 4 phase iii to Kimberley, Eastwood & Langley Mill Super Hub
Can the tram come towards Kimberley by 2023?
The last 4-5 weeks have been some of the busiest and I believe most productive times thus far in the nine year campaign to bring the tram out to Kimberley and beyond.
I’ve summarised the key information at the link immediately below (click on the link), but will expand briefly here on some of the most notable points:
a) Earlier this month I received an unsolicited approach from Adrian Jones, an independent rail consultant & professional railway engineer who lives locally and has worked on rail projects throughout the world. I duly met Adrian and he has produced some thoughts on above tram extension – shown in detail through clicking on the above link. Most notable is his contention that there should be a partial completion of the total route out to Langley Mill – going towards Kimberley by 2023. This is altogether a brave, challenging and very exciting concept that I and others will be grappling with over the next few weeks and months, to see how exactly this could be implemented.
b) I have a further meeting with a major store on the Giltbrook Retail Park next week to discuss the tram extension, as they have particularly expressed an interest in this scheme as beneficial to their members of staff (co-workers), who currently struggle to get to the store because of traffic congestion.
c) On 11 October a group of individuals (see photo in above link) met in Kimberley to discuss how we could regenerate the local area – especially around Kimberley, Eastwood, Langley Mill – looking at ways of boosting jobs, improving public transport, bringing growth and investment to the area, as well as cutting pollution. Our session was skilfully chaired by Rev Canon Barbara Holbrook. Where between the councillors there were differences, we disagreed with a very good nature, with respect for one another’s opinion – irrespective of what political party badge worn. Everyone came together to work for the people of Broxtowe and the surrounding areas.
You might not think a group of individuals coming together in this way is any way special. Politics, be it at national and (increasingly) at local level – I no doubt do not need elaborate, is very divisive and spiteful with often little collaboration or respect shown between different political parties and individual councillors or MPs.
A perfectly good idea advocated by one political party is often rubbished by the other side, simply on partisan grounds.
This may well raise some eyebrows, and I will get criticised in some quarters, however I would like to publicly acknowledge the work in the community done in Broxtowe by three Conservative Councillors: Cllrs Margaret & John Handley & Lydia Ball. You will also see their photo in the link above, and all three made excellent suggestions on how we could make the case for the tram extension out through Kimberley and beyond stronger and how we help foster economic regeneration in the north of Broxtowe. In particular Margaret has made the case for better connected bus services with a new tram and rail interchange/super hub.
d) I met with Conservative County Councillor for Greater Heanor Alex Stevenson on Friday 26 October in Langley Mill to talk through the case for a Super Hub at Langley Mill, and get his views on how we can work collaboratively together. We had an excellent session – Alex is very conscientious and well connected and we are looking to engage with other community groups and Nigel Mills – MP for Amber Valley on the proposals.
e) On Friday 2 November this week – Gloria De Piero (MP for Ashfield), Cllr Alex Norris (MP for Nottingham North), Andy Cooper and myself have a session with Cllr Jon Collins – Labour Leader Nottingham City Council – to understand how we can make further tangible progress on the tram extension and economic regeneration along the A610 corridor.
Footnote – from what I have written in part above, does it mean that I am about to change my political allegiance? No.
What we are trying to do is create locally a more mature politics where politicians of different parties are able to work constructively together for the benefit of residents in Broxtowe, Ashfield, Amber Valley & the surrounding areas.
2) 2nd Kimberley Scout Group Bonfire & Firework Display
This takes place this coming Saturday 3 November 2018 at Kettlebrook Lodge, Eastwood Road, Kimberley.
The bonfire will be lit at 7pm, with hot food and a licensed bar and disco until 10pm.
Admission £3.00, children £1.50 and under 2’s free.
You can pay on the door – and this is a charity fundraiser on behalf of the scout group.
3) Wall demolition – Ruislip Close, & Nine Corners Zebra Crossing – Kimberley
I have mentioned both of these issues plenty of times in previous newsletters during 2018 – see http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/work-in-broxtowe/
There appeared to be an impasse with the County Council, however I am pleased to report that I have a meeting with them tomorrow to discuss both issues. I’ll update you further in November’s newsletter on the outcomes of both matters.
4) Potential data breach on behalf of Nottinghamshire Council County Council by VIA EM
On 8 August 2018 I sought initial advice from the Information Commissioners Office on the way that VIA EM (on behalf of the County Council) had shared to another person, personal information properly given to me regarding several constituents in Kimberley (without my permission, or the permission of the residents in question).
The County Council have now confirmed to me that they are now reviewing the way they share their data with Members.
5) Rumbletums Cafe and Training Project – Victoria Street, Kimberley
Since 2011 Rumbletums was set up to offer vocational training and work experience placements to young people and young adults (16-30) with learning disabilities.
As well as this, it has become a community hub in Kimberley and also offers a parent and toddler group, a Silver Screen film night for older people, regular social events for young people with disabilities and subsidised room hire space for local voluntary organisations and community groups.
For the last 7 years, Rumbletums has rented its premises at a discounted rent, but now the landlords want to sell the building within the next year… at a cost of £200,000. Rumbletums is therefore faced with having to buy the premises, move out or wind up the project.
Therefore, Rumbletums is going to try to raise £200,000 to buy the building in order to continue – and expand – the project.
If you would like to support Rumbletums in an way please see: https://www.gofundme.com/rumbletums-cafe
No doubt many of you will have seen some of the national headlines concerning UC during the past few weeks. In the Broxtowe area it is estimated that throughout the borough there will be around 6100 families (including 9,700 children) claiming UC when the full roll out of the scheme is complete. I’ve been given some background information on UC and if anyone experiences any problems or has questions with any aspect of UC please get in touch.
This service is temporarily unavailable and is unable to offer the mediation to residents, or take neighbour nuisance case referrals.
If you are approach by residents who have any kind of dispute with their neighbours, please advise them to contact the following teams:
The Tenancy & Estate Management team for disputes involving Council tenants, whether they are the complainant or the dispute is against a Council tenant, on 0115 917 3400 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
The Communities team for disputes involving other households on 0115 917 7777 or email: email@example.com
The Mediation Co-ordinator post will be recruited to shortly, but it is expected that it will be the New Year before the service is resumed.
The deadline for responses is 30 November 2018.
10) Sale of Beeston Town Hall
On Wednesday 17 October 2018 – at a Full Council meeting in Broxtowe a decision was made to sell the Town Hall to Cornerstone Church. Whilst in an idea scenario, I would contend no public assets should be sold off, in this instance I supported in principle the proposals to allow the church to purchase the building. From the evidence that I had seen they clearly sought to use the building to benefit the whole of the local community, and had a sound business and financial plan.
I received no representations from constituents in the north of the borough about this matter.
If anyone has any questions please let me know.

Some of the most interesting items I have come across recently. It does not mean necessarily I endorse everything that is said, but they do provoke some thought and discussion:
