Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – September 2018
A warm welcome to my September newsletter and especially those who have joined recently.
Thank you to everyone who has been in touch since the last issue in July.
This month’s edition is quite long (I was on holiday for a couple of weeks in August) – so there’s quite a bit of news to catch up on.
I trust you find the information provided both stimulating and useful.
As ever, if you have any feedback, comments, any issue you would like to raise or need help with personal casework, please get in touch.

Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – September 2018
1) Clean and Green Litterpick
Broxtowe Borough Council are organising a priority litter pick on Tuesday 18 September at Dovecote Lane Recreation Ground, Dovecote Lane, Beeston. The event is at 1130am.
If you would like to nominate an area for a priority litter pick in a specific area in the north of the borough – ie Kimberley, Eastwood, Awsworth, Cossall – please let me know.
2) Millfield Road open space, Kimberley
Broxtowe Borough Council are planning some improvements on the park on Millfield Road. In particular this will consist of a set of swings for older children in the grass area beyond the play area. They also plan to extend the area slightly on the far side to include an item of equipment for toddlers. The rubber surfacing will be pressure jet washed to give it a fresh clean appearance.
The current indications are that this work should be completed by the late Autumn.
More information is available from Tim Crawford:-
3) Recycling stickers
During the next two weeks, recycling stickers will be placed on residents’ recycling bins in Broxtowe. The recycling sticker show what items can go in the recycling bin. This will be the first step in a series of activities planned to reduce contamination.
- The next 3 issues concern complaints against Nottinghamshire County Council *
4) Wall demolition – Ruislip Close, Kimberley
I last reported in July – that the situation here is quite ridiculous – see item 8: http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/2018/07/broxtowe-news-update-information-service-july-2018/
As a brief reminder as to the background to this – earlier this year I was asked by a number of residents living close to Ruislip Close whether a large wall can be demolished in one of car parks, with one of reasons being incidents of anti social behaviour that takes place behind it. I duly made some enquiries at the moment to see what actually can be done about this, what consultation is needed, and what any costs would be.
From what I can understand from officials at Broxtowe one of the key issues there appeared to be a dispute about land ownership, which I was hoping would be clarified without lengthy delays.
There now seems an impasse with the County Council – who, having been passed the matter by Broxtowe, do not appear to want to engage. I sent them a further reminder on 5 September, and am currently awaiting a response.
If there is no response by October, I will refer the case to the Local Government & Social Care Ombudsman.
5) Potential data breach on behalf of Nottinghamshire Council County Council by VIA EM
On 8 August 2018 I sought initial advice from the Information Commissioners Office on the way that VIA EM (on behalf of the County Council) had shared to another person, personal information properly given to me regarding several constituents in Kimberley (without my permission, or the permission of the residents in question).
I am currently awaiting a response from the County Council on this matter, following questions I have asked of them. This is a really important matter and has long term implications on the way that councillors refer matter to the County Council.
I am hoping that the County Council respond with the utmost clarity on how councillor referrals will be dealt with in future, without compromising the personal privacy and rights of individual constituents.
6) Campaign for greater road safety for pedestrians Nine Corners, Kimberley
I have covered this matter on previous occasions and most recently item 7: http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/2018/07/broxtowe-news-update-information-service-july-2018/
I contacted the County Council again last week, as I remain convinced that the County Council have not dealt with this request properly at all. There is very important information from constituents in Kimberley that have not been satisfactorily addressed.
I am hoping to meet an officer of the County Council about this matter later this month.
I’ll come back with an update (hopefully) in October/November.
7) Kimberley Workers Education Association
The history of Scotland to the Act of Union will be studied at a course open to all starting Tuesday 18 September, going through to 20 November 2018. The venue is Rumbletums Café, Victoria Street, Kimberley – 315pm – 445pm. Further details can be found by clicking on the image shown here:
8) Tram Extension – Line 4 phase iii to Kimberley, Eastwood & Amber Valley
Work continues behind the scenes on this exciting project with a group of volunteers currently working on detailed maps, routes, documents and consultation meetings with local parish councils, community groups. We have further meetings set up with Nottingham City Council later today (and in November), and we are in discussions with some significant businesses and employers in the north of Broxtowe and just across the border Amber Valley.
A key part of our work now focuses on the concept of a transport Super Hub at Langley Mill – where the tram extended from Phoenix Park through Kimberley & Eastwood would terminate. There would then be a fast link from Langley Mill through to the new Hs2 Hub Station in Toton, and options for electric buses from Langley Mill through Codnor to Ripley.
BBC East Midlands today covered this on Wednesday 16 May 2018 – and the whole piece from the 10 30pm news slot is shown here:
Our key aim is to bring jobs, investment and growth to the north of Broxtowe and Amber Valley – especially – Kimberley, Awsworth, Eastwood, Langley Mill & Heanor – areas that are often left behind and forgotten about. Reducing travel congestion is also critically important. Our aim is not to replace any existing bus services, only to improve public transport and offer more choice to the public & reducing the need for car journeys.
More detailed information on some of the work undertaken so far over the past few years on the tram campaign can be found at:
If you would like to get involved in any way, please let me know.
9) Trowell Ladies choir, poems and story telling, Trent Brass Quintet & more
This coming Saturday 15 September offers a treat at 2 30pm, Holy Trinity Church Hall, Kimberley – with a lovely afternoon of entertainment – please see the following link for more details: IMG_20180802_0001
11) Maws Lane Kimberley
Two years ago, with the help of Kimberley residents I undertook a major study into two traffic, travel and pedestrian safety problem areas in Kimberley – the report was published here: http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/2016/08/submission-to-nottinghamshire-council-regarding-suggested-highways-improvements-in-kimberley-swingate-and-maws-lane-areas/
I have now started to receive additional complaints from residents particularly in the Maws Lane, Kimberley area who continue to suffer problems. I am meeting with residents currently with a view to seeing what exactly can be done to try and secure some proper long term solutions.
I’ll update further in future newsletters on what progress there is.
12) Stapleford Neighbourhood Plan
If you wish to comment on the Stapleford Neighbourhood Plan – the details are shown here: Stapleford NP FINAL with correct map 6 August 2018
The period for consultation runs from 10 September 2018 till 19 October 2018
13) Annual Public Meeting Greater Nottingham Clinical Commissioning Partnership
This is to take place on Wednesday 26 September between 6-8pm, at the Nottingham Conference Centre (near Theatre Royal), Burton Street, NG1 4BU. More details can be found by clicking on the following link:
14) Suggested interesting reading
Some of the most interesting items I have come across recently. It does not mean necessarily I endorse everything that is said, but they do provoke some thought and discussion:
a) There really never was a “golden age” for the Welfare State, & what poverty really means:
b) A new majority politics starts with what people value: family, friendship, locality, community and country – it’s called the common good:
c) The audience that really matters in Brexit battle to come – the people who haven’t been paying attention:
