Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – June 2018
1) Missing Post Box Maws Lane, Kimberley
It’s coming home!
Following some concerns raised with me by residents around Beverley Drive and Stocks Road area Kimberley about a missing post box I contacted the Royal Mail Group about this. I’m pleased to report a successful outcome, with a letter I received today (please click on the image below). If the format doesn’t work properly and you can’t see the image please let me know.
2) Armed Forces day celebrations in Broxtowe
As part of Armed Forced Day celebrations, a Freedom of Entry Parade will take place this coming Saturday 30 June in Kimberley. Soldiers from 170 (Infrastructure Support) Engineer Group will march through Kimberley Town Centre at 11.00am to exercise their freedom of entry to the Borough of Broxtowe.
For more information please contact Broxtowe Borough Council – 0117 9173210 – email firstname.lastname@example.org or click on: www.broxtowe.gov.uk/freedomparade
3) New lottery scheme to support communities throughout Broxtowe
Local charities and and voluntary organisations in Broxtowe Borough are being encouraged to sign up to a new lottery scheme, which will help local people support good causes in the Borough when it launches later this year.
Work is underway to set up The Broxtowe Lotto, where the community can buy tickets online to weekly draws for a chance to win a jackpot of £25,000, as well as prizes of £2,000, £250, £25 or three free tickets. Tickets will cost £1.00 with 60p from each ticket going towards local good causes.
Any Broxtowe-based organisations who are interested in signing up should contact the Council’s Commercial Manager on 0115 917 3316.
They should be:
- non-profit making
- have a constitution or set of rules
- able to provide annual financial statements (audited where appropriate)
- or an annual report (unless it is a new organisation in its first year of development when a budget statement would be required).
- Organisations must be open to all regardless of age, race, creed, sex or political affiliation as appropriate.
- Organisations must be able to demonstrate a link with the borough, either through the direct provision of services or other means, which benefit the people of the borough thereby enhancing the quality of life for the local community.
- Organisations which wish to have a dedicated webpage on Broxtowe Lotto’s site must be promoting projects or services which are of benefit to the local community.
- Organisations that promote political, racial, religious, sexual or social intolerance will not be considered for participation as their services will not be of positive benefit to all within the local community.
There are two parts to the Broxtowe Lotto. Good causes in Broxtowe Borough will be able to set up their own lottery page and will receive 50p in every £1.00 spent by players using this method. A further 10p in every pound will go into a general good causes fund, with the remainder being put towards prizes, operating costs and VAT.
Players who do not wish to support a specific cause can still take part, with 60p of their ticket price going into the general good causes fund, which will be distributed by the Council.
The Broxtowe Lotto was agreed by Broxtowe Borough Council’s Finance and Resources Committee earlier this year.
For more information or if your organisation would like to express its interest in being part of the Broxtowe Lotto, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3316.
Potential players should keep an eye out for more information on the Council’s website at: https://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/broxtowelotto
4) Campaign for greater road safety for pedestrians Nine Corners, Kimberley
I am struggling to understand the attitude of the County Council about the crossing for pedestrians near Nine Corners in Kimberley.
These details were submitted to the County Council on 27 February 2018 – along with copies of the complaints and suggestions I have received from local residents, many of which were very interesting.
The most recent response I received from the County Council dated 3 May 2018 was bewildering and contained several contradictions. I have formally asked that their decision not to take action be reviewed and I have also offered to meet County Council officers in person to discuss further. I have had no response yet to my latest submission of 15 May 2018 (despite issuing several reminders) – when I receive more information I will let you know.
5) Tram Extension – Line 4 phase iii to Kimberley, Eastwood & Amber Valley
There is a huge extra amount being undertaken now and during the next 8 months following a burst of activity last month which certainly caught the attention of some of the local media with proposals for an exciting “super transport hub” in Langley Mill, where a tram from Phoenix Park through Kimberley & Eastwood would terminate, then allowing a fast train link directly through to the new HS2 Hub Station in Toton, with options for additional public transport improvements up through Codnor through to Ripley.
If anyone would like to join a friendly and non politically aligned community group looking at the tram extension, please do get in touch.
6) Wall demolition – Ruislip Close, Kimberley
I have been asked by a number of residents living close to Ruislip Close whether a large wall can be demolished in one of car parks, with one of reasons being incidents of anti social behaviour that takes place behind it. I’m making some enquiries at the moment to see what actually can be done about this, what consultation is needed, and what any costs would be.
From what I can understand from officials at Broxtowe there appears to be a dispute about land ownership, which I am hoping will be clarified soon.
When there is more information available I will let you know.
7) Rumbletums Cafe, 2a Victoria Street, Kimberley, Nottingham, NG16 2NH
One event next month to let you know about – on Wednesday 18 July, 7pm to 9pm – Death Cafe. An opportunity to talk about any aspect of death or dying in a safe, friendly relaxed atmosphere. It’s not bereavement counselling or group therapy, but what it is, is a chance to face that final taboo and, by confronting our mortality, to live a fuller and happier life. And there’s coffee, tea and cake too.
8) Edgwood Road, Kimberley
I met with the local police Chiefs on Tuesday this week to talk through a number of issues affecting Kimberley. One of matters we talked about related to land being used at the top of Edgwood Road. I have been contacted by several local residents asking about ownership of the land, and various activities that had been taking place in this vicinity.
My understanding is that PC Toon is meeting with the owner of the horse (on the land) this week.
In terms of ownership of the land – this (as ever with land ownership matters) seems to be a reasonably complex matter (apparently it belongs to an energy company).
I am now making separate enquiries with Broxtowe and the Land Registry as to real ownership of the land.
I have had some excellent suggestions put forward to me by local residents including making the area a “community space and garden”.
I can’t promise that this will happen, but I will certainly be endeavouring to find out about land ownership – and what the possibilities are in terms of public adoption.
When there is more information I will let you know.
https://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/media/4814/leisure-and-environment-committee-agenda-13-june-2018.pdf – I was informed that Broxtowe Borough Council have now taken ownership for cleaning of The Precinct. This is something that I particularly welcome (it was very difficult to trace who had responsibility for cleaning before), and now it’s in public ownership – there is greater transparency and accountability.
If anyone does notice anything untoward about excess litter, please let me know.
10) Improving traffic flow – in and around Giltbrook Retail Park
I am very much looking forward to meeting with the green travel coördinator for one of the largest firms on the Retail Park in July, there’s lots to talk about affecting Kimberley, Giltbrook and the surrounding areas and am looking forward to some innovative and positive ideas coming forward.
I’ll update you in future updates on progress.
11) Local Residents’ meetings
When I was chatting with a number of residents on Edgwood Road, Kimberley last week – I was asked about the possibility of residents meetings (essentially it’s a bit like a surgery) – you come and have a chat with me about local issues, we see what can be done, and more generally we put the world to rights. In the distant past I have undertaken surgeries and to be honest these were largely not well attended. I get the majority of my work and contact from residents now through word of mouth recommendation and this newsletter.
I’m happy to try residents meetings again – but maybe do it a bit differently. I’ll try this once a month from July (and each month rather than ask you to come to say Rumbletums or the Parish Hall – I’ll come to you). Next month then on Saturday 7 July between 10 30am and 12 30 – I’ll visit residents on Clive Crescent, North Street and West Street – Kimberley. Each month I’ll try a separate area and see how this goes.
12) Lord Ferrers Awards 2018
Do you know someone in the local community – a volunteer who supports the policies in helping keep our communities safe? If so you are able to nominate an individual – whom if successful would receive an award organised by the Home Office at a ceremony on 16 October in central London. Please see the following letter for more information:
13) Suggested recommended viewing/campaign issues
Some of the most interesting items I have come across recently. It does not mean necessarily I endorse everything that is said, but they do provoke some thought and discussion – this month – Grenfall, the Brexit shambles and the Tories NHS pledge:
