Hi all

A warm welcome to my May newsletter and especially those who have joined this month.

It’s been literally non-stop work all month and there’s lots of information to relay so it’s straight down to business.

If you have any feedback, comments, any issue you would like to raise or need help with personal casework, as ever please get in touch.

Best regards

Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – May 2018

1)  Giltbrook Care Home, Nottingham Road, Giltbrook

On Tuesday 22 May, following a specific request from local residents I visited staff and relatives to discuss some serious concerns about the future of Giltbrook Care Home (GCH).  I listened very carefully to some impassioned pleas from both staff and relatives who were worried about information that had been fed back to them.

Whilst at GCH I noticed in particular how motivated the staff are and particularly how happy and content the relatives seemed about how their loved ones are being cared for.

I duly asked my colleague County Cllr John Handley to come back to GCH on the following Thursday 24 May, and we both duly visited again, with John addressing the meeting this time and taking on board all of the comments made by those attending.  John handled a number of points put to him regarding the County Council involvement with great aplomb and I have seen a written submission that he has now made to the Chairman of the Adult Social Care & Public Health Committee – Cllr Stuart Wallace on behalf of local residents.

In summary whilst I appreciate that there have been problems in the past with previous management of GCH and with various communications during the past two years, there has clearly been a complete turn around during the past two months.

Both John and I hope that both the Care Quality Commission and the County Council will recognise the steps that have now been put in place to rectify the previous concerns and with the necessary safeguards in place, we trust that GCH will be allowed to prove itself as an excellent provider of care.

A huge “thank you” to Cllr John Handley for his excellent support.  When John has a response I will let you know.

More information available from myself or Cllr John Handley, County Councillor for Greasley & Brinsley

2)  Armed Forces day in Broxtowe – two events – Beeston & Kimberley 25 & 30 June respectively

Two specific events are taking place in the borough – to celebrate Armed Forces Day – one in Beeston which is the Armed Forces Flag Raising in Beeston Square on Monday 25 June 2018 at 1045am.

Then in the north of the borough on Saturday 30 June at 11am there will be a Freedom of Entry Parade through Kimberley town centre at 11am featuring 170 personnel from the Infrastructure Support Engineer Group.

Following the parade in Kimberley there will be a commemorative service at Hall om Wong park to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

3) Campaign for greater road safety for pedestrians Nine Corners, Kimberley

I am struggling to understand the attitude of the County Council regarding the crossing for pedestrians near Nine Corners in Kimberley.

These details were submitted to the County Council on 27 February 2018 – along with copies of the complaints and suggestions I have received from local residents, many of which were very interesting.

The most recent response I received from the County Council dated 3 May 2018 was bewildering and contained several contradictions.  I have formally asked that their decision not to take action be reviewed and I have also offered to meet County Council officers in person to discuss further.  I have had no response yet to my latest submission of 15 May 2018, when I receive more information I will let you know.

4)  Tram Extension – Line 4 phase iii to Kimberley, Eastwood & Amber Valley

There’s been some solid progress during May on the proposed tram extension from Phoenix Park, out through Kimberley and Eastwood into Amber Valley.  I think I wrote previously that I’d burnt some midnight oil getting documents prepared for a high level meeting that took place earlier this month in Westminster on 16 May.  Well now that has happened there’s a mountain of further work to do, and I am very grateful for all of the positive support feedback from businesses and individuals.   I also at the same time appreciate that not everyone shares my enthusiasm, and I am working hard to ensure that there is support across the political spectrum and that genuine concerns are properly addressed.  Those people who write derogatory, incorrect or inflammatory remarks on Facebook I simply ignore.  Constructive comment, criticism and viewpoints however are always welcome.

I am really pleased for example that a colleague who has previously stood as political opponent, but has some really good ideas and wants to get involved in campaigning for the tram (and if truth be told they are better on computers than me), came to visit me two weeks ago to offer their support.

What has certainly caught the attention of some of the media are proposals for an exciting “super transport hub” in Langley Mill, where a tram from Phoenix Park would terminate, then allowing a fast train link directly through to the new HS2 Hub Station in Toton, with options for new modern bus links through Codnor to Ripley.

I have had further sessions with a number of colleagues in various locations since 16 May and we are now in the process of undertaking more activities and compiling more detailed documents that will explore various options in greater depth with a substantive report being produced in early 2019 that will aim to take us to the next stage.

People often ask me what the timescales for all of this and when might any of these proposals actually materialise.  That’s not an easy question to answer.  This is all very much at the reasonably early planning stages at present with lots of options and economic assessments for viability for routes and options being considered.  Political events both locally and nationally in Westminster with the passage of HS2 legislation through parliament during the next two years will undoubtedly be hugely relevant and affect the eventual outcome.

It’s probably safe to say as well that there may well be a phased approach to major transport infrastructure improvements not only along the A610 corridor but elsewhere through the East Midlands with the advent of HS2.  It’s highly unlikely that on any one day everything will be delivered, rather there will be a staged implementation.

General information on HS2  can be found at: http://www.d2n2lep.org/write/East_Mids_HS2_Growth_Strategy_FINAL_VERSION_2017.pdf

In terms of HS2 itself there is a public awareness meeting on Friday 22 June 2018 – 130pm at Trowell Parish Hall, Stapleford Road, Trowell, NG9 3QA.

Any questions, please get in touch in the usual way, with a reminder that there’s a good deal of information also at:

Tram extension Line 4 phase III to Kimberley, Eastwood & into Amber Valley

5)  Cinema Giltbrook Retail Park (GRP)

Many of you may remember the petition I undertook in 2013 regarding the cinema at GRP.

Cinema Project 2013 – Giltbrook Retail Park

I was subsequently shown plans whereby the owners of GRP wanted to install a cinema by 2022.  There was then a period of silence and the project went onto the back burner due to other priorities for the site.

Due to the increasing number of people who still ask me about what is happening with the cinema proposals I met earlier this year with British Land representatives again and put again the case for a cinema complex.

Along with Cllrs John Handley and Margaret Handley I met with British Land representatives on Thursday 17 May at GRP.  We discussed this matter at some length and were advised that the project is not dead in the water however there needs to be some very creative thinking in order to take this forward now.

Creative thinking, therefore it is, and during the summer I am planning to see if there is a way we can make some tangible progress with this again.

I am disappointed that progress on this is so slow after all the work that has been put in thus far and with previous firm proposals now seemingly on the back burner.

I think this is a case of being extremely diligent, flexible and not giving up!

6)  Wall demolition – Ruislip Close, Kimberley

I have been asked by a number of residents living close to Ruislip Close whether a large wall can be demolished in one of car parks, with one of reasons being incidents of anti social behaviour that takes place behind it.  I’m making some enquiries at the moment to see what actually can be done about this, what consultation is needed, and what any costs would be.

From what I can understand from officials at Broxtowe there appears to be a dispute about land ownership, which I am hoping will be clarified soon.

When there is more information available I will let you know.

7) Rumbletums Cafe, 2a Victoria Street, Kimberley, Nottingham, NG16 2NH

Two events to let you know about here, one in June, and the other in July.

Wednesday 18 July, 7pm to 9pm – Death Cafe. An opportunity to talk about any aspect of death or dying in a safe, friendly relaxed atmosphere. It’s not bereavement counselling or group therapy, but what it is, is a chance to face that final taboo and, by confronting our mortality, to live a fuller and happier life.  And there’s coffee, tea and cake too.

9)   Suggested recommended viewing/campaign issues

Some of the most interesting items I have come across recently.  It does not mean necessarily I endorse everything that is said, but they do provoke some thought and discussion:

Understanding the legitimate grievances, anger & resentment that animate the populist revolt & creating a politics that can respond is the most is the most pressing political challenge of our time:
