Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – November 2017
1) The Hidden Bakery, 232 Nottingham Road, Eastwood NG16 3GR
The official opening of the Hidden Bakery on Hilltop Eastwood is to take place next Friday 8 December at 12 noon with the Mayor of Broxtowe – Councillor Halimah Khaled MBE. I do hope as many of you as possible will be able to come along.
Offering fresh handmade bread, artisan teas, cakes, pastries, breakfast, brunch, lunch and Sunday lunches and much more I am absolutely delighted for the owners Heidi and Andrew who experienced a torrid time in Kimberley. In Eastwood this represents a new start for them and their perseverance has certainly paid off. The loss for Kimberley is most definitely a gain for Eastwood.
The quality of the goods they produce and service they offer is second to none.
The Hidden Bakery is actually open from tomorrow – 1 December – with next Friday being the ‘official opening’ “with the Mayor”.
More information on The Hidden Bakery available at:
or by emailing: firstname.lastname@example.org
2) Campaign for greater road safety for pedestrians Nine Corners, Kimberley
Following concerns from local residents I am going to launch a major campaign in January to and improve road crossing for pedestrians near Nine Corners in Kimberley. So many people try and cross the road either to get to Kettlebrook Lodge, Holy Trinity Church and of course to then cross back and walk up to Hardy Street and experience many difficulties. Thank you to all who have been in touch.
If you would like to be involved in this in any way please let me know.
I’ll touch on this more in January – and will make lots of literature available.
3) Refuse collection in Broxtowe
If you reside within the borough of Broxtowe you should have already been sent information about the changes in refuse collection. New bin calendars have already been sent to every household ahead of the changes, which start on Monday 4 December.
If anyone has any questions please email: email@example.com
4) £200 the price of a cover up?
Many of you will now be familiar with the incredible problems that Stephanie Hather has experienced trying to legitimately trade in Kimberley with her Jacket Potato business. I have covered this matter comprehensively before – especially in my September edition, and with slighly less detail in October’s newsletter (both referenced below).
In particular I wrote last month that at that time the complaint made by Steph was at the Stage 2 of Broxtowe’s complaint process with a formal investigation taking place.
Both Steph and myself specifically asked to be interviewed as part of this process so we could give verbal evidence and explanations to supplement the written representations already made.
So now the council’s response has come back. It offers Steph £200 in total for the errors that “the council have acknowledged” (which has taken one year to conclude).
The report that the council has written is very weak:
a) it supplies no answers as to why Steph and myself were not invited to be interviewed.
b) it contains wholly inaccurate information where for example it denies a meeting took place between the Deputy Chief Executive, another member of staff and myself on Wednesday 2 August 2017. It did take place, I have documents to prove this.
c) the report completely ignores the true reasons why the trial that was agreed with Steph last year was cancelled right at the last minute.
Last Friday 24 November I made a robust further submission to the Chief Executive in addition to comments that Steph has made, asking for further and specific explanations as to inaccuracies and omissions in the council’s report. To date no response has been received.
In my submission I was careful to state from the outset that council officers do a tremendous job, week in, week out for the residents of the borough and that my criticisms are not of them. The fault here clearly lies with those councillors who have put extraordinary pressure on members of staff to implement their own parochial wishes.
The real reason the trial was cancelled and Steph has endured so many problems is that Kimberley Conservative Borough Councillors, together with some members of Kimberley Town Council don’t want her to trade.
So the real message is this – Broxtowe is open for business (but only if you are friends with the Tories).
I take my council work extremely seriously and I am determined to ensure that justice prevails in this case, together with the utmost transparency in every instance.
I would be pleased to receive any further comments you have on this.
5) Tram extension to Kimberley & Eastwood & into Amber Valley
I attended an excellent summit on Monday this week at Leicester City Hall, organised by East Midlands Councils – click on the following link: adScan
This meeting was well attended from across the East Midlands Region including MPs council leaders and senior local government officers.
A key objective of the summit was to look at the East Midlands region’s transport projects and see how local business growth can be maximised through their delivery.
The East Midlands is registered as one of the worst geographical regions to live as measured by social mobility and employment opportunities for people in former coalfield/industrial areas. Poor public transport links is seen as one of route causes. I am a passionate supporter of public transport and supporting regeneration – with new jobs and opportunities – particularly in and around Broxtowe, Ashfield and Amber Valley.
I met at the summit both Sir John Peace, (Chair of Midlands Engine) and Maria Machancoses (Programme Director at Midlands Connect Project Team) and discussed the opportunities for the Amber Valley, Eastwood, Kimberley Tram extension as part of the Hs2 Growth Strategy.
A follow up meeting is now being planned for January next year with colleagues at Midlands Connect as to how to take the tram extension forward.
I’ll update on progress in due course.
6) Labour selects its parliamentary candidate in Broxtowe
I have been asked by Ian Robertson, Centre Manager for Christians Against Poverty in Ilkeston to relay the following information:
Christians against Poverty (CAP) have recently opened a new debt centre in Ilkeston which offers free debt help to those struggling with debt. Their service is not only available to those living in Ilkeston and Heanor but also to anyone in the NG16 sub-postcodes 1-4 (an area stretching from Nuthall to Langley Mill).
A CAP debt centre is not a place but a process. People telephone CAP on 0800 3280006 requesting help. The local centre manager with a support worker visits the enquirer in the privacy of their home and collects all the financial information. On receipt of all details CAP analyse the problems and recommend a way forward. That may be a debt repayment plan and/or an insolvency option. Budgeting advice is always given and CAP seek to support their clients through the whole process of them becoming debt free.
CAP helps over 20,000 clients a year and handles over £45 million of client debt.It works with hundreds of finance and utility companies and saw over 2500 clients become debt free last year. Ian Robertson manager of the new centre at Ilkeston says; “Typically debts can build up when a relationship breaks down, someone loses their job,or through bereavement–so often when people are least able to cope with a financial headache. We hope over the next few years to help countless local people and families, regardless of their age, gender, faith or background to put their debt nightmares behind them and start a new life.”

Gerry Hargreaves has a background of electrical installation and maintenance followed by considerable experience of energy monitoring providing technical support to the marketing division of East Midlands Electricity.
Projects throughout the UKhave included energy monitoring and data/billing analysis to assist companies to improve efficient use of energy. This has included disputes with electricity suppliers and distributors and site surveys, installation of temporary monitoring equipment and recommendations to install suitable power factor correction equipment. Site surveys for the installation of a M&T at major sites, have been undertaken and with the recent advances in remote monitoring technologies surveys and installation of GSM smart meters have been undertaken at distribution centres of a leading logistics company. A request by a leading UKenergy supplier has resulted in the installation of remote data collection technology, including planning and installation of remote data logging equipment to monitor and analyse usage data from geothermal sites within theUK. This work is ongoing in the development of renewable energy and low carbon technology.
Site visits and travel are significant reduced with the application of t-mac technology.
