Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – November 2016
A warm welcome to my November newsletter and a special welcome to all those who have joined during the past month.
There’s plenty of news to update you on so straight down to business.
Always happy to receive feedback, and if you need help or assistance with any personal case work – do get in touch.
I trust the information below is useful for you.

Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – November 2016
1) Former Kimberley Brewery Site
The Planning Committee at Broxtowe Borough Council on Wednesday 9 November 2016 considered an application for construction of 25 dwellings on the Warehouse Yard at the former brewery site in Kimberley – 16/00333/REM. The full information is provided at the following link: http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=34643&p=0
Kimberley Town Council and Kimberley Residents Association (amongst others) had both objected to the application (see pages 24 and 25 of the above link) – the design and appearance of what was planned formed some of main concerns.
The Planning Committee decision was to grant permission for the 25 dwellings subject to removal of the originally proposed wooden cladding. The applicant has subsequently submitted revised plans showing removal of the wooden cladding from the dwellings – this has now been replaced by a suggested slightly darker red brick feature. The details of the revised plans can be found here: 057_pl08_streetelevs_11-11-16
If you have any comments on the revised plans please send these via email to: firstname.lastname@example.org (please feel free to cc me in also).

2) Update on regeneration sites throughout the borough – Kimberley Caravans through to Cossall Industrial Estate, Beamlight Eastwood & Moults Yard Stapleford
Please see pages 32-37 of this link: http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=34646&p=0 – for full details.
3) Town centre investment priorities
At the above link (pages 24-31) you will see a report presented to the Jobs & Economy Committee at Broxtowe Borough Council on 10 November 2016 which included a recommendation that Stapleford benefits from a proposal to promote free wi-fi coverage for the public.
I argued at the committee that Kimberley should be included in the currently proposed scheme also. Wi-fi reception is very patchy through Kimberley – and in order to help regeneration in the north of the borough, I contended that we should not miss out.
The decision was made to allow funding for a public wi-fi scheme in Stapleford only at this stage.
I am disappointed about this – and would welcome any comments that you have.
4) Suggested commercial lease for the square in Kimberley
What appeared to be an entirely modest and sensible suggestion to boost trade and footfall in Kimberley has been blocked by the ruling group at Broxtowe Borough Council last week. Since May 2015 the council has been Conservative controlled.
Officers of the council had recommended that a jacket potato stall could be trialled on Wednesdays – bringing some diversity to Kimberley.
Conservative councillors objected saying “it would damage existing businesses” – I think this demonstrates poor judgement and lack of experience on behalf of new Conservative councillors.
For a number of years as many readers will know there was a successful Farmers Market in Kimberley on the first Saturday of the month. Whilst it did dwindle in popularity for various reasons (and was then taken over by a different organisation) it did bring people into the area from all over the county (and outside) for a good period of time.
I am not suggesting that one single trader would regenerate Kimberley! I do think though we should encourage diversity and encourage income regeneration in the area.
Again I would welcome your thoughts on this matter.
5) Community Action Teams (CAT) in Kimberley
A number of years ago CAT meetings took place in Kimberley two or three times year, looking at a number of problem issues in the area including anti social behaviour, street lighting, street signage and general community issues. Representatives from the police and other agencies would attend wherever possible.
Regretfully these meetings suffered from a number of ongoing problems including:
a) they got increasingly politicised and I received a number of complaints from residents about this.
b) because of the length of time between meetings and with this area having active town and borough councillors – actions were taken anyway – making the meetings largely irrelevant.
c) very few people attended.
I have been asked whether CAT meetings should start again in Kimberley in 2017.
In other areas of the borough for example Bramcote and Beeston – they have proved very successful.
My own view on this is that these are not necessary in Kimberley. There are very active councillors in the area, plus a town council/residents association, and I think that the majority of folk know who to go to if there are problems.
However I am very happy to listen to points of view made by the public in favour of CAT meetings.
Do let me know your views.
6) Hs2 and Broxtowe
Yesterday saw the announcement from the government that regarding the route that the northern section of HS2 will follow, including confirmation of the location for a station at Toton (in Broxtowe) to serve Derby and Nottingham.
I believe this to be good news, and a press release concerning the announcement is shown within the link below.
Meanwhile lots of work is currently taking place behind the scenes in various locations (Kimberley, Nuthall, Nottingham, Eastwood & Heanor) to support the Tram extension to Kimberley (and beyond).
If you would like to get involved in this hugely important and very positive campaign please drop me a line.
7) Maws Lane & Hardy Street & Swingate Traffic Improvements Kimberley – the County Council response
This matter appears not be to relenting (getting increasingly fractious) and my understanding is that Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry is now involved.
I covered this matter in great detail in September’s issue: http://richardsrobinson.org.uk/2016/09/broxtowe-news-update-information-service-september-2016/
Clearly there appears to be growing public dissatisfaction with the way the County Council have responded. Feedback that I have received range from “the County Council have clearly missed the point in both traffic hotspot areas”, “£25,000 is a lot of money to spend on one scheme that will not rectify anything in the long term”, “nothing that the County Council is proposing to do will benefit the majority of residents in Kimberley”. “It ignores totally traffic problems on Cliff Boulevard”.
The most poignant comments I have received from residents is “it all smacks of a fob off”.
There are lots of questions left unanswered – here’s just a few: – a dangerous corner on Greens Lane – some sensible suggestions for improvement from local residents – ignored (Swingate).
A petition presented by 100 local residents – ignored (Maws Lane).
The long standing issue of the bus stop on Eastwood Road that should be moved to prevent traffic queuing over the Maws Lane junction – ignored (Maws Lane).
I have made my views perfectly clear that spending a fraction of the £25,000 set to be made on moving two car parking spaces on Eastwood Road, would have far greater value if it was put into a proper long term study for comprehensive traffic improvements for a much wider area of Kimberley.
The latest County Council response indicates that the scheme design is underway and is currently in draft format. See the document here for the proposals: i__highways_design-and-constr_design_cad_dr
These proposals (set to cost £25k) include drawing a new kerb line, extending the footway, installing low level bollards (to physically prevent vehicles parking on a widened footway).
Because of the loss of car parking spaces on Eastwood Road the County Council are further proposing burning off some of the double yellow lines on Awsworth Lane (which I am sure residents there will be very happy about)! This is subject to funding agreement for the next financial year (2017/18).
The County Council argue that there have been four identical injury collisions and therefore cannot ignore them. My response is that they shouldn’t. What they should do instead is seriously examine all of the work that I undertook with local residents over the past year – and look seriously at your suggestions for improvements (after all it is local people who use these roads every day in Swingate and Maws Lane/Hardy Street) and witness the every day problems.
Last week I was driving down Maws Lane (the narrow stretch with cars parking on one side) – a car came at a good pace up the hill towards me (so I had to mount the pavement) in order to avoid a collision. If a pedestrian would have been around on the pavement goodness knows what would have happened.
Those of you who live on Maws Lane tell me of many similar experiences they have had.
Spending £25,000 removing two car parking spaces will not stop this.

8) Stapleford Post Office
Proposals are afoot to move the current Post Office site in Stapleford from 11 Church Street to 98 Derby Road, Stapleford (Bargain Booze).
This matter is due be discussed tonight at the Policy and Performance Committee – Broxtowe Borough Council:
http://www.broxtowe.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=34654&p=0 – see pages 40-45. This part of the meeting is open to the public to attend.

This takes on place on Friday 2 December 2016 between 6pm and 8pm – Toll Bar Square Kimberley featuring a performance by members of Holy Trinity church.
11) Brexit & what this means for our communities in Broxtowe and the surrounding areas
It doubtless will not have escaped your attention we live in rather momentous, uncertain and somewhat unpredictable times – Brexit, Trump and so on.
What all of this means for us locally is no doubt unsettling for many people.
In the New Year I will be launching a new project including talking with residents directly about their concerns, hopes, asking what you really think of politics and politicians – and trying to get a real steer on local community priorities, as well as what you want to see changed in the wider world.
If you would like to help at all with this project and get involved, do drop me a line.
12) Suggested recommended reading (current national issues)
This is a fairly new item I introduced where I’ll post links to some of the best reads I’ve come across on a range issues recently. Hope you find them stimulating. Does not mean to say I endorse them, but they are interesting.
