Hi all

A warm welcome to July’s newsletter.

There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happens – once wrote Vladimir Ilyich Lenin.  I think this probably best sums up life in the UK since the EU Referendum debate on 23 June, just five weeks ago.

It seems to me unimaginable that so much should happen within a short amount of time – and certainly for the time I have actively been involved in politics, going back to 1991, the past few weeks have been wholly extraordinary.

Whilst there is so much uncertainty nationally (you probably won’t get two people agreeing on what Brexit does or does not mean), combined with the parlous state of the Labour Party – it’s certainly not a time to be faint hearted.  Thankfully I’ve built pretty robust shoulders, having battled through various challenges and I have strong advisers.

I have very busy locally over the past month – so there’s a lot of information to get through.

Always happy to receive feedback, and if you need help or assistance with any personal case work – do get in touch.

Trust the information below is useful for you.

Best regards

Richard S Robinson

Broxtowe News Update & Information Service – July 2016

 1)   532 Bus – Selston – Eastwood via Kimberley

I have been contacted by a number of residents – very unhappy with the reduction in services that are imminent again.  This particularly affects people in the Hardy Street, Cliff Boulevard, Alma Hill and Maws Lane vicinity of Kimberley.  There are a good number of people who are elderly, who do not drive and therefore have no other means of getting into Kimberley for shopping.

Two years ago a lot of people got in touch about this service and I spent a fair amount of time pressing the County Council to take some action.  They did respond positively then, however the current position worries me a lot.

I have made urgent representations to Nottinghamshire County Council about this matter and I have asked to meet up with Chris Ward the Manager for Transport & Travel Services.

If anyone is affected by the further reductions please let me know as soon as possible, and certainly by no later than 5 August.

2)   Have your Say – Wednesday 10 August 2016 – 730pm – 9pm – The Nelson & Railway Kimberley

Maybe you are concerned about Brexit and how it will affect you or your business?

You might have a moan and groan about something that’s going off locally?

Or maybe you’ve got some opinions about the current state of the Labour Party and want to get it off your chest?

You might even want to get involved in local campaigning.

Whatever it is, I’m holding an open session for all members of the public to come and have a chat on Wednesday 10 August at the Nelson & Railway and I’ve booked a room there for us to meet.  It would be great to catch up informally.  Even if you have some private matters you wish to discuss – come along or drop me a line and we can arrange to meet up separately.

Please do feel free to come along, irrespective of where you live.

3)   The Precinct, Kimberley

I continue to receive complaints about the amount of litter in and around The Precinct, Kimberley.  Previously I have raised this with Kimberley Town Council, and I understand now that this has escalated to Broxtowe Borough Council, who in turn have been instructed to find out exactly what action can be taken to force the owners of The Precinct to make improvements.

If anyone has noticed amount of litter and has not contacted me yet, do drop me a line.

When more information is available I will let you know.

4)   Junction of Town View and High Spannia, Kimberley

I was asked to investigate the possibility of restoring the mirror on the junction of High Spannia and Town view to aid drivers coming out of Town View and Brendon Drive.

Unfortunately the County Council have refused this.

On a more positive note – after receiving requests for the carriageway on Brendon Drive and Town view to be inspected (the surfaces are very poor) – the County Council have confirmed that repairs to safety defects will be carried out.

If you require any further information please get in touch with myself or Dave Walker:

Dave Walker

District Manager Ashfield & Broxtowe

Network Management

Via East Midlands Ltd

5)   Smart Motorways Programme M1 junctions 23a to 24 and M1 junctions 24 to 25

I’ve received some important information from Ruth Hyde Chief Executive of Broxtowe Borough Council about more work to be undertaken on the M1motorway in our area – this can be found by clicking on: Ruth Hyde Letter

6)  Anti social behaviour Alma Hill vicinity – Kimberley

On 30 June I met with the police, local residents and Broxtowe Borough Council to discuss various elements of anti social behaviour in the above vicinity.  I’ve got a further meeting with Derwent Living on 29 July to try and work out better ways of coordinating and communicating in the future between the various statutory bodies.

I am hoping that we can secure some positive long term improvements, particularly on communications.

7)   Litter on Babbington Lane, Kimberley

I’ve received complaints for some time now about the amount of rubbish and litter on Babbington Lane.  I contacted Broxtowe Borough Council and I was advised on 13 June that a new litter bin was going to be installed.

If you experience any ongoing problems with litter in this area, please do let me know.

8)   Tram Extension Line 4 phase III to Kimberley, Eastwood & into Amber Valley

There have been a number of discussions over the last couple of months including with colleagues at Gedling Borough Council, Amber Valley Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council & Nottingham City Council regarding future tram extensions in and around Nottingham.

I and other colleagues are planning to increase the campaigning work particularly in the Eastwood, Giltbrook and surrounding areas – supporting the tram extension to Kimberley & beyond.

Along with Kimberley, Eastwood, Nuthall Tram Action Group (KENTAG)  – we are aiming for example to significantly develop our social media presence and work with young people and schools locally to promote the tram campaign.

If you would like to get involved with the Tram Campaign in any capacity we always welcome new members – do feel free to get in touch with myself or Andy Cooper (Chair of KENTAG) usercp6695@aol.com – 0750 2279 198.

Tram extension Line 4 phase III to Kimberley, Eastwood & into Amber Valley

I have asked this week the current MP for Broxtowe Anna Soubry to confirm her position on the tram extension to Kimberley – whether or not she supports the proposals, when this is known I will let you know.

9)   Giltbrook Retail Park (GRP)

I met earlier this week with some of the Senior Manager at GRP to discuss a number of matters.

I’m sure you are all well aware from the national news as to what is happening with British Home Stores (BHS).  The BHS GRP store is to close on 22 August and a new furniture store is coming in its place (this will not be open until December – possibly Boxing Day).

I believe the new store will be SoFab – a store which specialises in made to measure furniture.  See below for a link to Lord Kirkham and SoFab.

With regards to the cinema proposals that many of you will be familiar with I am told that major operators such as Cineworld have been contacted however there are no settled concrete plans yet.

For all the work the work that has previously been undertaken on this – I am very keen to keep pressing for this, and again, as with the Tram information above – I’m planning to do a lot more work locally with young people and on social media to boost the campaign.

Do get in touch if you would like to help with the cinema campaign – I’d be very pleased to hear from you.

10)   Maws Lane Junction, consultation on One Way System, and Swingate traffic flow

You may recall some of work undertaken earlier this year regarding two traffic hotspots in Kimberley.  I have had a report prepared summarising the finding of the survey that local residents completed.  As soon as I can get this published I will let you know.

In the meantime I have been advised that the County Council are intending to undertake some work in the vicinity of Maws Lane, Eastwood Road junction between January and March next year.

I have some major reservations about what precisely the County Council are planning.  They seem intent on pursuing short-term measures that will not address longer standing problems.  As I understand it for example there are no plans to re-site the bus stop near the zebra crossing. I have lost count the number of times I have asked the County Council to consider moving the bus stop following residents requests – the traffic here regularly goes back over the Eastwood road junction when a bus is parked up causing lots of problems.

I am contacting the County Council again this week with the hope that some common sense can prevail and that they will listen to local residents views.

If anyone has any questions on this do get in touch.

When more information comes out I will let you know.

What can be done to improve traffic flow, congestion and pedestrian safety in Hardy Street/Maws Lane, Cliff Boulevard & Swingate areas of Kimberley? Initial report.

Consultation on making Maws Lane and Hardy Street, Kimberley One Way

11)   Suggested recommended reading (current national issues)

This is a new item I am introducing where I’ll post links to some of the best reads I’ve come across on a range issues recently.  Hope you find them stimulating.

a) We can’t pretend that poverty is solved by getting a job: Let’s rethink tax & social justice:

b) Theresa May’s Mission Impossible: to construct a society Thatcher never achieved:

c) – Brexit – Nationalism triumphed over liberalism, populism triumphed over evidence & expertise; paranoia triumphed over trust:

d) Neil Kinnock’s famous speech to the Labour Party Conference, Bournemouth, October 1985 (in my opinion very apt for today)

e)  Labour a tragedy in 3 acts
