Kimberley, Awsworth, Cossall & Trowell News Update & Information Service – October 2014 (part 2)

1)   By-Election Kimberley Town Council

Whilst the rest of the political world will have its eyes focussed on the Rochester & Strood by-election on 20 November, to see whether UKIP gains its second MP we may well have our own by-election for Kimberley Town Council on the same day.  This might not gain so much national publicity I guess, but still it’s important.

If you would like to serve your community by becoming a town councillor please see the following information:

Nomination papers must be delivered to the Returning Officer, Council Offices, Foster Avenue, Beeston NG9 1AB no later than noon on Friday 24 October 2014.

More information available from: sue.rodden@broxtowe.gov.uk

2)  Kimberley Brewery Site

Thanks to all of you who got in touch concerning last week’s Development Control meeting in Beeston.

Kimberley resident Jean Nunn gave a very balanced passionate presentation in favour of the development of the brewery site, and I took the opportunity to present the views of everyone who had been in touch on this matter (both for and against the development).

The upshot of the meeting was that planning application was approved for the Kimberley Brewery site which will provide 123 residences – or, over 20% of the next 14 years housing allocation for Kimberley.

Breaking this down on the site – the planning application & listed building consent seeks to create 128 new dwellings, including 78 new two, three & four bedroomed houses, 24 new two-bedroomed apartments, and 26 apartments converted from existing historic buildings.

The application also seeks to bring back into use redundant and deteriorating historic brewery buildings (some of which are listed).

Of importance to us is that a route is safeguarded through the site for the tram extension.

For more information on this application please contact:

Ms Suzanne Dempsey

Kimberley Brewery Site Planning Case Officer

0115 9173404 – suzanne.dempsey@broxtowe.gov.uk

3)   Withdrawal of 27 bus service from Cliff Boulevard & High Spannia, Kimberley

From 1 December this year Trent Barton are planning to totally remove the 27 bus service from all of the current core period operations during the daytime in the above area.  The Swingate route will still be maintained.

Last week Cllr Andy Cooper and members of Kimberley Town Council met with Trent Barton representatives to understand why this move was taking place.   Trent Barton mentioned the importance of time keeping the and that their only way of maintaining this would be to cut the Cliff Boulevard area out altogether.  Also we understand that the Swingate part is profitable for the company whilst the Cliff Boulevard area is not.

The 27 route currently goes up Maws Lane Kimberley and down Hardy Street (therefore everyone around Alma Hill, Cliff Boulevard, Stocks Road estate, the racecourse estate, Hardy Street, & Norman Street) will all be adversely affected by the proposed changes.

The difficulties in winter particularly for older people who live alone in this area and the social importance of them being able to get out and about are absolutely crucial.
Needless to say Cllr Cooper, myself and members of Kimberley Town Council are extremely unhappy with this latest cut in services affecting some of the most vulnerable people in our area around Alma Hill etc.

** What do you think about this?  Please do let us have your comments **

We will be launching a petition and be writing to every household in the affected areas.

We do not believe that people who need and use the service most should be penalised simply because the operating company do not profit from the *service* they provide.  whilst we recognise the need for Trent Barton to make a profit, we believe every effort should be made to find a resolution to this decision which will harshly affect some of the most vulnerable in our community.

For any more information please contact Andy Cooper – andy.cooper@broxtowe.gov.uk or myself.

4)   Oxylane

Many of you will remember the Oxylane planning application which was refused in December last year.

Since then representations from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) have been made to the council in terms of the £900m investment that Oxylane’s French parent group intend to make in the UK on 30 different sites (with Broxtowe always having been considered the first and showcase model).

Incidentally amongst other things UKTI work with overseas companies to look at the UK as the best place to set up or expand their business.

With all this in mind on Thursday 16 October 2014 at the Cabinet meeting Broxtowe Borough Council we considered whether support should be given in principle to a new joint planning application for the development of a new leisure centre within the Oxylane sports village complex (see link below).

I’m delighted to see that this was approved – and that now a new joint planning application in association with Oxylane will be submitted to the council for consideration by the Development Control Committee.

As soon as there is any more information I’ll let you know, in the meantime if anyone has any questions do get in touch.

5)   Speeding signs – Eastwood Road, Kimberley

Andy (Cllr Andy Cooper) has been doing some work for people on Eastwood Road Kimberley who were concerned about getting a replacement speed indicator on Eastwood Road.

Andy reported this to the County Council Highways Dept and we’ve been advised that the speed indicator would be replaced shortly. The original speed indicator had been damaged owing to a vehicle hitting it.

Please contact Andy for any further details.

6)   Political rant

If this seems somewhat of a departure from the very positive politics that myself and my Labour colleagues normally practise then please bear with us for several paragraphs.
We are constantly appalled but never surprised by the extremely negative and at times damaging campaigns run by other political parties in Kimberley and the surrounding areas.

Everything it seems is geared towards failure and division, nothing ever has a positive slant.  Everything it seems is about their political party or themselves and little or nothing about our community.  We are fed up of hearing this claim or that claim and the constant mud being thrown at people almost all of the time unjustified.

Witness for example the latest Liberal Democrat focus leaflet – click here on Focus

For a start it contains wholly inaccurate and misleading information – a number of people have complained about this to me.   For the record Broxtowe Borough council are NOT financing a feasibility study into the tram extension Line 4 phase II to Kimberley, Eastwood & Amber Valley.  A financial contribution towards the final cost of the study will be made from Broxtowe, alongside a number of other partners.

The same Liberal Democrat Leaflet then states that Oxylane would spell the ultimate “death knell for Kimberley Leisure Centre”.  This is wildly inaccurate and misleading.  At the Cabinet meeting on 16 October – as in (4) above, the Liberal Democrats offered their full support for the joint planning application with Oxylane.

Maybe Ken Rigby hadn’t had a conversation with his other Liberal Democrat colleagues, who knows?  In any instance we hope that in future the Lib Dems will take care not to present such negative and potentially divisive statements.

Locally in the Labour Party we see it as our duty to work for our local residents irrespective of party political issues or affiliations.
Now is the time for all of us to work together to create and shape a better future for all of our community.  We would never claim perfection either as a party nor individually, however we do always seek to present balanced and fair arguments and to fight for our residents irrespective of party political affiliation.

Rant over.

7)   Boundary review Broxtowe Borough Council

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England have now completed their Broxtowe-Final-Recommendations-October-2014 report.

A draft Order – the legal document which brings into force their recommendations – will be laid in Parliament. The draft Order will provide for new electoral arrangements which will come into force at the next elections for Broxtowe Borough Council on 7 May 2015.

What this means for us locally is that some of the wards are due to change for example – Kimberley & Cossall will no longer be a combined ward but for electoral purposes, Cossall would be combined with Awsworth & Trowell.

Kimberley would be a ward in its own right (including Babbington), with the addition of a few houses off Larkfield Road.

You may therefore be voting in future for different council candidates than you have previously – especially if you live in in Awsworth & Cossall and Trowell.

A meeting of the Electoral Advisory Committee on Monday 24 November at 6 00pm, in the New Council Chamber to make a decision on warding arrangements.
A map of the new wards and boundaries can be found at:

For further information please contact: sue.rodden@broxtowe.gov.uk

8)   Resurfacing of Church Hill & High Street Kimberley

I’ve received a number of complaints about the state of the roads here.  I’ve contacted the Director of the Environment at Nottinghamshire County Council and am awaiting a response (not only on this matter but also the A610 road noise, and a number of other highway issues around Kimberley).  When there’s more information I’ll let you know.

Certain resurfacing of roads in Kimberley is taking place during October including Nottingham Road/Kimberley Road, Nuthall.

Severn Trent are undertaking work in the Main Street, Eastwood Road, Newdigate Road area, and a map of the works is shown at:

Gerry Hargreaves has a background of electrical installation and maintenance followed by considerable experience of energy monitoring providing technical support to the marketing division of East Midlands Electricity.

Projects throughout the UKhave included energy monitoring and data/billing analysis to assist companies to improve efficient use of energy. This has included disputes with electricity suppliers and distributors and site surveys, installation of temporary monitoring equipment and recommendations to install suitable power factor correction equipment. Site surveys for the installation of a M&T at major sites, have been undertaken and with the recent advances in remote monitoring technologies surveys and installation of GSM smart meters have been undertaken at distribution centres of a leading logistics company. A request by a leading UKenergy supplier has resulted in the installation of remote data collection technology, including planning and installation of remote data logging equipment to monitor and analyse usage data from geothermal sites within theUK. This work is ongoing in the development of renewable energy and low carbon technology.
