Kimberley, Cossall, Awsworth & Trowell News Update
& Information Service – January edition 2012
1) Kimberley Connect
Lots of people in and around the Kimberley area have been asking what has happened to the Kimberley Connect magazine that used to be regularly delivered in the Nuthall, Kimberley area. It appeared to be a very poplar source for local information.
I’ve managed to found out that Kimberley Connect has definitely stopped being published. However a replacement for Kimberley Connect is now due to appear throughout our area I understand during 2012. It will be bi-monthly, and it it is published by the people who produce the NG5 magazine.
If you would like further information or would like to advertise in the new magazine the phone number is 0115 926 9777, e-mail: info@ng5.org.uk
The postal address is: NG Magazines
2 Goodwood Avenue
Arnold
NG5 7BB
2) Kimberley Farmers Market – Saturday 7 January 2012 – 9am – 1pm Toll Bar Square Kimberley
It’s the first Saturday of the month again on Saturday, which means it’s Kimberley Farmers market again.
Do come along and support your local market!
3) Trent Barton 27 bus route/T1 Phoenix Flyer
A good number of you have been asking what has happened to the meetings that we organised with Anna Soubry MP towards the end of last year to see whether Trent Barton would consider a re-route for the existing 27 service (so it would cover the whole of the route that the T1 previously covered).
On 14 October 2011 Andy, Mary, Cllr Lydia Ball and myself met with Anna at her office in Chilwell in order to see what influence could be brought to bear on Trent Barton because of the loss of service and detrimental affect in particular for Awsworth residents.
We’ve now had the official response from Trent Barton, which to say the least is disappointing. In essence they are not interested.
The only hope we really have now of getting a positive outcome is looking at alternative ways of finding new funding for the previous T1 route. I understand that this is a subject that is due to be discussed at Cabinet in Broxtowe at some point during the next few months. When more information is available I will let you know.
In the meantime if you are adversely affected by the withdrawal of the T1 service do send us your details. This will help us in future negotiations we have.
4) Citizens Focus Group
There’s been an excellent response to this initiative, and I’m planning the first meeting for February. Thanks to all of you who have expressed an interest. I’ll publish the date in the February newsletter.
It’s not too late to register your interest though!
For those who have joined this e mail list recently, or who missed what this is all about, essentially after talking a resident in Cossall during October, I came up with the idea of setting up a Citizens Focus Group. We’ll meet up informally once every 2 months and disucss practical politics (looking at probably more national issues though). I get a lot of comments from people a whole host of issues including immigration, social services, energy, education, transport, housing, NHS, employment and IT.
The idea would be is that we would find a particular subject to discuss on each occasion, and exchange views and individual expertise. If we then come up with a practical proposal, we can send this to the appropriate body to be considered as a policy option.
I’m happy for people of varying (and of no) political persuasion to get involved, and really hope that this can be a real “grassroots” way of involving people in positive politics again. I’m sure whilst we will never always agree on everything we can enjoy a robust discussion, and even have some fun in the meantime.
I’ll confirm the venue too for February, I’m looking at a couple of venues in Kimberley at present.
5) Car Parking Review in Kimberley
The decision to charge for car parking in Kimberley from April 2010 on Victoria Street has proved to be one of the most contentious and locally politically divisive ones in all of my years as a councillor. There’s little benefit or wisdom in raking up old arguments now, other than to acknowledge the previous “impasse” between different sides.
Credit should go to Kimberley Town Council who have consistently maintained their opposition to the charging (and the affects of it).
Throughout last year I continued to receive lots of complaints from residents on Newdigate Street and Victoria Street who were suffering intolerable nuisance and damage with the extra congestion caused due to cars being parked on the narrow streets as opposed to the car park.
Victoria Street car park has remained virtually empty.
At Broxtowe Borough Council a review of the impact of the car parking charges in Eastwood, Kimberley & Stapleford has been undertaken, and this was reported to Cabinet on 20 December.
During the review Mary, Andy and myself argued for a complete lifting of the charges for Victoria Street, Kimberley.
I know the next few lines will appear very bureaucratic, but bear with me, as within local government these are the processes we have to work through!
The recommendations that have now come out of the review suggest that for Victoria Street car park (as now) the first hour should be free. The big change being that for the rest of the day a flat rate charge of £1 be levied. This is a substantial reduction from the current charge (but not of course free).
This suggestion will now go back to another committee (for final deliberation) who will then report back to Cabinet again.
My understanding is that this will take until April 2012 to reach a final decision and make any changes.
During the next few weeks Mary, Andy and myself will be writing to all residents of Newdigate Street and Victoria Street individually to sound out views on the proposed changes as highighted above. We will then in turn ensure these are fed into the final decision making process.
If you have points you would like Mary, Andy and myself to raise, please do let us know by 31 January.
6) D H Lawrence Heritage now open on Saturdays
Visitors to Eastwood’s Durban House and D H Lawrence Birthplace Museum can now celebrate the town’s most famous son all weekend after Saturday opening hours were introduced for the first time last October.
D H Lawrence Heritage is a multi-award winning visitor attraction based around two highly-acclaimed sites including the Birthplace Museum and Durban House Heritage Centre.
The attraction brings together a Museum, Heritage Centre, Gift Shop, Team Shop, Art Gallery and meeting room.
You can also get Sunday lunches from January too.
For full information please contact D H Lawrence Heritage on 01773 717353, culture@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.dhlawrenceheritage.org
7) Keeping up Appearances Grant Scheme (Broxtowe Borough Council)
The Keeping up Appeareances Grant Scheme was a very popular scheme designed to improve retail and commercial properities across the borough. What it did was to contribute up to £2000 (50% matched funded) to the costs of extrernal improvements and repairs.
I know of several shops and businesses in Kimberley that previously benefited from this scheme, with improvements to shop windows etc.
Despite the exceedingly tough financial restraints facing the council (and having to temporarily withdraw the scheme) at the Cabinet meeting of 8 November a new scheme has been approved allowing £13,000 to be bid for by local businesses across the borough.
If you have a local business in Broxtowe and are interested in bidding for the funding, please get in touch and I can send you all of the appropriate details.
