Hi all,
As ever a mega busy time, now and particularly over the past 4-5 weeks. Summer holidays seem an eternity away now.
Thanks to all of you for your continuing feedback and comments, and welcome to all those who have joined this e mail group since the beginning of September. There’s over 600 of you now to keep regularly in touch with. So along with everything else, I’ve got little time for mischief.
I am really very excited about a major project and initiative that Nick & I have been working hard on during the past 6 months. It’s the Farmers Market in Kimberley. Yes it is about to start, and yes you heard about it here first.
So on Saturday 7th November between 9am and 2pm we will have our first Farmers Market in Kimberley!
Please read below for full details. Needless to say Nick & I are delighted that the hard work has paid off. It’s not been an easy task and has taken some pulling together, but we are finally now there and ready to start.
I would personally like to thank all local residents who originally contacted Nick and myself at the beginning of this year. I have to be honest and say this certainly was not my idea and that I would never have thought about the idea of a Farmers Market.
What is abundantly clear though is that positive politics can make a difference; local residents contact their elected representatives – local councillor and MP. They in turn work together in order to champion the cause of their local residents. Both Nick and myself have precious little time to get involved in the negative campaigning tactics deployed by the opposition parties.
We are both just so pleased to have played a part in what will hopefully serve to help regenerate the community we serve.
I hope you enjoy reading all of the newsletter below and that you find it stimulating.
If Nick or I can help in way, you need help with personal casework, or you have feedback or comments, please do get in touch.

Best regards,
Richard

Cossall and Kimberley News Update and Information Service October 2009

1) Farmers Market Kimberley
For 2009 these are to take place on Saturday 7th November, Saturday 12th December and Tuesday 22th December. They will run from 9am until 2pm. The venue will the Toll Bar Square, spreading into Newdigate Street car park, Kimberley.

We will have stalls selling the following goods; specialist plants and trees, crafts, fruit vegetables and salad, meats, together with home made cakes and pastries and free range eggs (all from local producers). The 22nd December market should be particularly tempting as you will be able to get all of your fresh fruit and veg for Christmas. Dates for the 2010 markets will be publicised in December.

Do come and support this major initiative aimed at regenerating Kimberley!

Also If you are interested in having a stall, please get in touch.

More information available from Nick or myself.

2) Newdigate Street Kimberley
Some of you will remember the extensive work and consultations that took place between July last year and June 2009 looking at how traffic congestion on Newdigate Street could be sharply improved.

After working with local residents, together with Nick (Palmer) we put a very detailed submission to the County Council asking for a number of significant improvements including double yellow lines opposite Kimberley School, a Residents Parking Scheme, and a series of bollards to prevent cars from mounting the pavements.

Since June this year when the administration of the County Council changed to Conservative control, I have been asking for a site meeting with the senior Member responsible for Highways, in order to try and progress this matter.

I did finally meet with County Cllr Richard Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Highways on Friday 18th September, on site, to look at a comprehensive package of measures, incorporating those above, and we discussed how and when these could be implemented. I’ve also asked for additional funding for Kimberley School, in order that they can convert more land inside school grounds for parking.

Basically now, we are in the hands of the County Council. They have all of the information. As soon as I hear more I will let you know.

More information available from myself, or County Councillor Richard Jackson cllr.richard.jackson@nottscc.gov.uk.

3) UK Coal Open Cast Mining – Cossall & Trowell
Last month two public meetings were held in Cossall and Trowell respectively. This week an action group has been set up CATAC – Cossall, Awsworth and Trowell Against Coal.

It is a small but absolutely critical group who will play a leading role helping co-ordinate the campaign against the threat of UK Coal ripping up acres of our local countryside in Cossall and Trowell. CATAC are particularly looking for volunteers who have expertise in either legal, wildlife, environmental or scientific affairs, that can help substantiate a robust case against UK Coal’s attempt to opencast. I n addition if you have time to deliver leaflets, CATAC would also like to hear from you.

For more information, or to volunteer please contact Jane Burd nottsagainstnewcoal@googlemail.com or iain@kaylee.uk.com.

4) Tram phase III route to Kimberley
You may recall that in July KENTAG (Kimberley, Eastwood and Nuthall Tram Action Group) was formed. The purpose of this group is to lobby and campaign for an extension of the existing tram route from Phoenix Park, out to Kimberley and Eastwood.

The next meeting of Kentag is set to take place on Thursday 19th November, 7 30pm at the Nelson & Railway. More information on the meeting and the work that is being done in the meantime is available from KENTAG Chair Andy Cooper usercp6695@aol.com or Steve Barber barbers@parliament.uk.

5) Car parking charges in Kimberley – what is going to happen?
I’ve reported before in copious detail – see for example http://www.richardsrobinson.org.uk/ck_updates/august09.shtml about the utter shambles concerning the proposed car parking charge in Kimberley that was decided and voted upon on 28th July. I’ve heard nothing since then about the proposals to introduce the charges on Victoria Street Car Park and possibly James Street from January next year.

Along with Members of Kimberley Town Council and fellow Borough Councillor Mel Crow, I continue to oppose the proposals to charge in Kimberley. As soon as any definite details are known I will let you know.

The only detail I have received generally on parking in Kimberley has been received today, and reads as follows:

Dear Cllrs,
As you know, we have not enforced the limited waiting bays on James Street Kimberley since the start of Civil Parking Enforcement in May last year. This has been because the signs and lines did not meet the minimum legal standards. However, these have now been upgraded and we will begin enforcement this coming Monday.

In preparation for this the Warden has been visiting the street this week and warning those parked in contravention. The aim of the bays is to ensure availability of spaces for those visiting the shops during the working week. Enforcement will free up these spaces and help town centre vitality. However, it will mean that all day parkers will be hit unless they park elsewhere. This is one of many town centre locations in the Borough where it is not possible to please everybody all the time.

Thanks John.

6) Dropped kerb Cornfield Road
Here’s an example here of just how long it can take something done (even though it looks pretty easy to do in the larger scale of things)! Over a year ago I was asked to see whether it would be possible to get a dropped kerb for a disabled resident, living nearby, to aid mobility etc.

Well it’s taken a year but Broxtowe have finally accomplished this last month.

Lesson? Perseverance is the key – though it can be frustrating how long it takes to get “small” things done!

7) Community Speed Watch (CSW) in Awsworth & Cossall
This was successfully launched last month. A number of areas have been identified as “hotspots” and are being monitored in Awsworth & Cossall, including The Lane, Main Street (Awsworth) and Awsworth Lane, Cossall. For more information about contact Ed Stewart the CSW co-ordinator ed.stewart@eonenergy.com.

8) Bridleways in Cossall
A good number of horse riders, and walkers met with Nick Palmer, Broxtowe & County Council officials and myself on Friday 31st July to see if the bridleways especially around Cossall could be opened up (ie the styles removed) in order that horses could walk the length of the bridleways, and therefore taking them off the busy and very narrow roads.

We had some discussions and a number of possibilities opened up that Broxtowe and the County Council are going to explore together.

I’ve been promised an update during the first week of November. More information in the meantime available from Steve Fisher – steve.fisher@broxtowe.gov.uk or Stephen Tipping stephen.tipping@nottscc.gov.uk.

9) Over a thousand years of history in Awsworth
An excellent account of history in Awsworth has been produced by Cllr Bryan Maloney. It’s in a book called (strangely enough) A History of Awsworth. It’s priced £8 and copies can be obtained by e-mailing Bryan on: bryan.maloney@ntlworld.com.

10) Bus Services up Swingate
Following the consultation that Nick and I did during August, over one hundred responses were received from residents in the Swingate area, 99% of which were strongly in favour of the T1 running up Swingate.

I am due to have a meeting with Veolia representatives in the next two weeks in order to try and work out a revised route and accommodate as many of the requests as possible. I am hoping we can start this from 1st December.

I’m in the hands of Veolia, and as soon as more information is known I will let you know.

More information from Nick or myself.

11) Eastwood Road/Maws Lane Junction – what is happening with the bus stop?
I have made a formal complaint to the County Council, and escalating this up through the various channels because of their single lack of action to improve the traffic queues from the bus stop (that they previously undertook to move), causing congestion at the crossroads with Maws Lane and Awsworth Lane.

As soon as there is more information I’ll let you know.

12) Hardy Street/Cliff Boulevard/Norman Street area – traffic congestion and road safety
In August I wrote to all residents in this area asking for views and suggestions for improvements to try and reduce the traffic congestion in this area. Again there’s been a large response, with some really positive ideas put forward. I’m currently getting all of the responses typed up and analysed, and in turn these will be passed to the County Council to work out a proper response and plan of action.

As soon as there’s more information I will let you know.

13) A610 Noise Improvements
This a long running campaign going back 6 or 7 years to persuade the County Council to install low level resurfacing (reduces vehicle noise by up to 5db) on the A610 between the Kimberley Bridge and Ikea junction. I’ve asked the County Council last month for an update on where we currently are on this matter.

As soon as there’s more information I will let you know.

14) Bus shelter at the bottom of the steps near Hardy Street, Main Street, Kimberley
I’ve been asked about what has happened to the above bus shelter. The answer I am told from the County Council is that due to being demolished by a recent accident, it will take 8-10 weeks to get a replacement. More information available from Karen Emery, Technical Officer Nottinghamshire Transport Services, Nottinghamshire County Council karen.emery@nottscc.gov.uk.

15) Almond Close, Alma Hill and Cornfield Road, Kimberley
In September I met with a representative of Derwent Living to discuss a significant investment and scheme that they are planning to implement in this area from January next year. Included in the works are extensive improvements to windows, security, parking and a possible allotment area.

More information is available from Mark Wood, Housing Officer, Derwent Living – markw@derwentliving.com.

16) One way system – High Street, Kimberley
I’ve reported in previous months about the continual flouting of the one way system here by drivers, to the annoyance of residents especially around Ruby Paddocks, High Street etc.

It’s dangerous and the situation is apparently not getting any better.

I’ve been give quite a radical suggestion that from where St Pauls Court is, to have the road by closed off by a series of bollards. What this would mean is that from St Paul’s Court to the end of High Street (where it meets up with Greens Lane) you would have to travel outwards by car in order to exit this area.

Obviously there will be pros and cons, but before I take this forward formally I would appreciate feedback on what people think to this.

17) Pavements in Kimberley
I went out with a Highways Inspector to look at various areas in Kimberley where people had asked for pavements to be improved. These included Town View, Brendon Drive, Swingate and Clive Crescent, Valley Road, and Awsworth Lane. Minor improvements are being made in these areas.

I’d like more long lasting resurfacing to be applied in many areas, but we have to work with what we’ve got.

If you would like any particular areas inspecting, please let me know. We will do our best, within finite resources to make improvements wherever possible.

18) Greene King
Many of you will know that Nick & I have been pressing Greene King on two major issues over the past couple of years; first they should consider selling the site off in separate parts (as opposed to one lot) and secondly that whatever happens in terms of the sale the interests of the residents in the brewery houses are fully protected.

I’ve been passed the following information from Roger Freeston who is the Director at Savills (the selling agents for Greene King).

Savills are shortly to be advertising some parts of the Kimberley Brewery for sale individually by private treaty. The particular properties comprise those on the east side of Station Road/Hardy Street, namely former garage buildings, together with offices and stores at the junction of Brewery Street and Hardy Street.

The railway cutting or the main Brewery site is not being offered for sale, neither are any of the houses. These will continue to be owned by Greene King, along with the bridge over Hardy Street and the offices either side.

Savills will however consider offers for other parts of the brewery.

A little more detail about what is being offered for sale is shown as follows:

  1. Former Commercial Vehicle Garage, Brewery Street – 0.131 hectares, 0.325 acres – potential for other uses/redevelopment
  2. Former Commercial Vehicle Garage, Station Road – 0.079 hectares, 0.195 acres
  3. Former Garage and Boiler House, junction of Station Road and Brewery Street – 0.018 hectares, 0.044 acres – freehold commercial premises with forecourt and rear parking.
  4. Former Wine and Spirit Dept Offices, Cellars, Workshop, Stores and potential land for development, Brewery Street & Hardy Street, Kimberley – 0.277 hectares, 0.685 acres – commercial suitable for alternation, renovation and conversion with a possible range of alternative uses.

I’ve been told that anyone interested in making an offer on anything mentioned above should contact Andrew Galloway: agalloway@savills.com – 0115 934 8112.

I have got paper copies of the sales if anyone would like them.

19) Broxtowe Action Fund
Broxtowe Borough Action Fund gives grants of up to £2000 to voluntary and community groups providing services in the Borough. Since the fund started in 2000 it has given nearly £165,000 to 188 groups. In the last 9 years a very diverse range of projects have been supported including a ladybird farm on a community allotment, yoga classes for disabled people and a skateboarding park in Stapleford. Many of the projects support the most vulnerable people in communities and have a lasting affect on people’s quality of life.

This year’s fund is being supported by Broxtowe Borough Council, Nottinghamshire County NHS, Nottinghamshire County Council and the Co-operative Group. The next deadline for receiving applications is 26 February 2010. Contact Richard Lea on 0115 917 3395 or richard.lea@broxtowe.gov.uk.
